I know I might sound crazy, but does it seem like Simmons so far this season doesn’t play 100% hard the whole game? I swear I’m not trying to overhype the guy, I’m being totally serious. It just seems like for significant stretches of every game, he’s holding back from dominating more on the scoring aspect, which is absolutely scary. Am I the only one who sees it like this? I was just wondering…

Its not ridiculous at all. Anyone with any sense of how good he is understand he isn’t as assertive as he should be considering how much better he is than most at this level. On top of that the commentators calling the game, and the guys at half time state such. Basically I’m sure.most see it.

It was so weird watching his 20-20-7 game. Even though he impressed the heck outta me, I still game away underwhelmed, almost cheated in some way. I honestly can say I have never had that paradoxical feeling before…

I do remember a similar thing said about Wiggins. Maybe he needs to be in better conditioning, therefor he coasts? I am still taking him number 1 for Boston should we get lucky (Brooklyn or ourselves)

I don’t think he’s holding back from scoring more. I just don’t think he’s that great of a scorer right now, especially in the half court against a set defense. His lack of an outside shot, or even the threat of an outside shot, really limits him in that regard. He also has a weird tendency to switch to his right hand when he goes to the basket, which has caused him to miss some easy layups and sometimes it seems like he is already predetermined to pass when he does drive.

Interesting you mention his tendency to over-pass the ball. His teammates have cost him triple-doubles in at least 2 of the five games I have seen. LSU’s offense has been terrible…

It’s hard for most as a huge number of us have never been the best player on a team, especially one who has great passing and ball handling skills, and also seems to want to win. He is not coasting, or not playing hard. It is difficult to know when to pass and when to shoot, when to let others create and when to be more assertive. He is merely trying to figure out how to use his insane gifts, and this is someone who hasn’t consistently played against high level athletes. By February, he will look more in control of himself and his team

20, 20, and 7 has to put Ben Simmons on a short list.

Who else has done it?  Can’t think of anybody…

I hope he’s the next Magic Johnson.

A new country, new league and team, he probably wants to be polite and pass the ball.  If he didn’t pass, then everyone should complain.

Simmons probably also knows that to have a lot of team success, he needs to keep the other players happy and provide them with shots.

The unselfishness will be great in the NBA, as a point forward he will often be surrounded by four players who always want to shoot.  Although if he joins the 76ers, maybe the shooters on the LSU team were better.

It’s not a "new country". He played high school ball in Florida for the last few years. Simmons does a lot of things REALLY well, but his inability to shoot, lack of explosion and over reliance on passing are slightly concerning. Some people just aren’t natural scorers. Simmons may be one of ’em. Honestly, the most alerting thing to me so far is his team isn’t winning. That’s obviously not all on him, but someone with that talent should be dominating the game, not just the stat sheet. Having a 20-20-7 game while losing to an unranked team is mind blowing. Following that up with another loss while only scoring four points is even more concerning.

It’s the Lebron syndrome. He’s far and away the best scorer on the floor period, and he’s a majical passer, but he always wants to share the ball and get everybody a few shots when instead he should be gong for 30. THat’s if he wants to win. His jump shot isn’t there yet, but it doesn’t have to be.
He’ll score 20 points anyway with his moves to the basket and an advanced post game that people don’t talk about often. I’m curious to see where his mind will be on this subject, by SEC play and you’re looking around and you’re on the bubble and might not make the tournament because you want to share the ball too much. The media would talk about that until the end of time..

Sorry, but this is ridiculous. If he were "the best scorer on the floor, period" he wouldn’t post 4 points and struggle getting his shot all night against an unranked team with no frontcourt NBA prospects. Again, Simmons does a few things really well, but he’s not a natural scorer, and the fact that his offensive game is so predictable at this point allows teams to zero in on his weaknesses on that end of the floor. His future is as a stretch 4 that orchestrates from the post and can start/finish the break, but if he doesn’t develop a jumper QUICKLY, his future won’t be as bright as predicted.  At this point, he’s a stronger Lamar Odom without a shot.

STRECTH 4???? What??? He can’t shoot. You can’t be a stretch 4 if you can’t shoot. He’s nothing resembling a stretch 4. He can bring the ball up like a point and is a superior passer. To be honest with you, I will agree with you that he was mostly a passer 2 or 3 years ago. But since then he’s grown 3 inches and got wayyyyyyy more athletic than he was.

So now he’s getting by people and to the basket easier than even he can believe. It’s an adjustment period, not because of lack of ability. He’ll have his share of 30 point games real soon because he’s that good…

That is exactly my point. He’s a stretch 4 that can’t shoot. He can spread the floor with his passing, handle and vision though.  Dude, he averaged like 19 a game in high school and didn’t exactly light up the All-Star circuit scoreboards. He may get a couple of 30 point games here and there, but what’s that prove? Corey Brewer has a 50 point game against NBA defenders and NO ONE would call him a scorer. Simmons is not a freak athlete. Hell, he’s not even a "great" athlete in terms of physical ability. He’s a good athlete with a tremendous skill set in a big body. He is Lamar Odom 2.0 with a broke jumper. Anyone who thinks this kid will be anything other than a pf at the next level doesn’t understand basketball.

So what do you project his numbers will be at LSU this year and in his prime in the NBA.
