TheFactionCoalition.comParticipantI absolutely hate racism and when the race card is pulled. I’ve been a part of the minority plenty of times, so I know that no matter the race, religion, gender, or any other characteristic, the majority typically will alienate the minority. My point is I am making this topic about race, but race is not a bad thing, it is a factual thing, and not something we should cringe everytime it is mentioned. Racist topics and racial topics are two VERY different things.
Moving on. . .I have seen several Jimmer comparison threads, and it is obvious that people cannot settle on a comparison. I realize Jimmer gets compared to other white people, and some people take issue with that. What I’m wondering is can we not see beyond black and white, or is it that the two races actually play a different style of basketball, making the comparison extremely difficult? What I want is to list some white players that have already played in the NBA and y’all tell me who you would compare them to. So instead of saying this player is their ceiling and their floor, we can have actual comparisons from the years we have seen them on the court. No particular order:
Larry Bird
Jason Williams
Spencer Hawes
Chris Anderson
John Stockton
Jeff Hornacek
Steve Nash
Brent Barry
Jon Barry
Dirk Nowitzki
Greg Ostertag
Luke Ridnour
Christian Laettner
So can you find good comparisons that aren’t white? Is it easier to say each player is unique? Obviously some of these players had much more successful careers than others, but that is what I was going for. There are plenty of non-stars that have passed through the league, so they should actually be easier to compare. This is not a challenge, I’m not saying it can’t be done or anything like that. Mostly I am just curious to see what kind of player comparisons we come up with. I tried not to go old school with the names, but feel free to add anyone you want. . .

BoomshakalakaParticipantnormally player comparisons consist of unproved players being compared to established players. You try to estimate what their potential will be based on their talents and their body type. it is had to compare established playvers to other established players but like you said they are all unique……
I do believe in your argument that players from different cultures play differently. I am a soccer fan also and it is very apparent that where you are from does factor into your style of play. Brazil, Germany, Mexico, England, Ivory Coast, all of these countries have very different styles and they play very similar to the own countrymen. so to some degree it is true White players play like White players and Black players play like Black players. To SOME DEGREE

hiphopismylifeParticipantGreat and relevant topic. I remember when people couldn’t find a recent white player to compare Chase Budinger to so they went all the way back to Tom Chambers lol.

surveParticipantIts difficult because there is a standard. No matter what anyone says, race is an issue. Some teams bank on landing a white player that can transcend the league. Its fact and reality. Someone once posted here that the standard scouting report on white players are that have high BBIQ, particularly when they lack athletic ability. A lot of white players who are talented but not great athletes are more apt to be drafted in a particular spot over a player of another race who is similar or identical in ability. For instance, one of the greatest players in Big East history was Lawrence Moten. Had he been white, I am sure he wouldve been drafted a lot higher and stuck in the league longer than 3 years. Jimmer is a great player and I like his game, and I think he can be a good NBA player. I think he deserves a chance to prove he is a good player, not just a good white one. A lot of teams thinking about drafting him are looking at his race and they will never admit it. Its not fair to the other races of players and not fair to Jimmer, but it is what it is. I know some will disagree, but this is a business, and the NBA was just about to shut its doors before Bird arrived because at that time there were a lot of black players on teams and a majority of white fans. By the same token, some black players…and other races as well may be drafted based on their athletic ability alone and they turn out to be flops. With all that being said, Jimmer is a crafty scoring point guard with range and the closest player from another race that I can compare his game to is Gilbert Arenas. Not to say he is Arenas but thats who is game reminds me of.

youngmagParticipantLarry Bird – no one there will never be another one like him. He is a top 5 player that will kill in no matter what era he played. Don’t know you better watch the videos.
Jason Williams- Brandon Jennings, flashy quick pg, he has a better shot than BJ. both same style. I wanna say Pistal.
Spencer Hawes, Channing Frye, tall guys that shoot jump shots.
Chris Anderson
John Stockton, all time assist and steal leader little guy without much quickness or speed that dominated games with his know how. Has there really been another one of those?
Dirk Nowitzki, he is German lol… best 7 foot shooter to ever play the game. Everyone is looking for the next him.

SwatLakeCityParticipantI do not think about race when I do player comparisons, nor do I think about ethnicity. I think both of those things are unimportant, and really do not affect how a certain player plays. That’s what I think is important when I do comparisons, how the player plays, their athleticism, are they great at one particular concept of basketball..ect. Never do I consider the fact that the player is black, white, european or not.
Now I admit there are sometimes when I do compare a white player to another white player, or I compare a european player to another european player, but that is just mere coincidence not evidence that I am racist or that I have issues with international players.

Ahkasi ClayParticipantI still think Jimmer is a
World B. Free kinda player.

Scottoant93ParticipantWhy does everyone always have to mention the race card. I doesn’t matter what race you are, and it doesn’t make you racist for comparing them to another player of the same race. I compared to Jimmer to Morrison/Reddick worst/best case scenario not because they are white because in college they were scorers like jimmer. people said d-willaims(nets) was compared to john stockton whenhe was with the jazz, they are not the same race

Too coolParticipantIts the type of society we live in these days…no matter how much we complain about it, its always going to be like that. its sad

Jeff Hornacek-Ray Allen

Brent Barry-Jr Smith
Jon Barry-The Sasha Machine
Dirk Nowitzki- Bob McAdoo

BoomshakalakaParticipantI dont think Race really gets factored into where someone gets drafted in the NBA….. but I do believe everyone wants the “Great White Hope” of basketball. And there is nothing wrong with that. Could you imagine how marketable Ginobili or Nowitzki would be if they were American? You are not going to draft a crappy white boy because he is White but if you have the chance of getting a possible Franchise White player that just makes good business sense.
0- Posted on: Fri, 04/29/2011 - 3:42pm #526702

surveParticipantI didnt say draft a crappy white boy, I am saying because there is a "Great White Hope" search as you say, good players like Adam Morrison tend to get overrated sometimes. I for one, NEVER thought he was going to be a good NBA player. Thats not to say I know it all because I wouldve never guessed Nash would be league MVP once, let alone twice. The pressure was not heaped on Nash like it was for Morrison though.

Scottoant93ParticipantSince you mentioned “the great hope”. Its like eminem in rap, but the thing is to me, If eminem was black, or if black rapper released his songs, I would still listen to it. People who listen to rap, or watch basketball because of a certain race are pathetic. Im italian(born in Italy), and I watched the Nba way before bargs, belinelli, and Gallo came over and will continue even another italian never makes it again.

AKOOParticipantthis is a stupid thread. I for one have compared Jimmer to Eddie House many times because I think that is what he is and nothing more. The OP played the race card and noone else
0 - Posted on: Fri, 04/29/2011 - 6:42pm #526848

TheFactionCoalition.comParticipantSomeone mentioned Dirk being German. . .I said white not American. I was not trying to prove a point one way or the other. Personally I think we tend to try and compare players too often. Sometimes a player comes out that is reminiscent of another player. However, it’s much more likely a part of a player’s game resembles part of another player’s game. Then another part resembles another player. However if we tried to say Player X passes like Chris Paul, but has D like GP everyone will assume that person is trying to say that Player X is Paul and GP combined when that really isn’t the case.
Akoo- You may think this thread is stupid, but it is at the very least a different take on things that have been discussed a lot lately. This site is not about your opinion only- congratulations that you compared Jimmer to a person that isn’t white, but that isn’t the point. If you peruse the site there have been a lot of issues as to who Jimmer is compared to. No race card is being played, that is ignorance on your end, I would love to see your comparisons for the players on my list.

BoomshakalakaParticipantAdam Morrison was drafted a bit too high but His name(and his mustache) was on everybody’s lips at the time. I mean the guy averaged about 30pts per game in a good divison. Think about it he is 6"8"(correct me if I am wrong), a good scorer in college, The Bobcats were a new-ish team so they needed a guy that was going to create a buzz. I think it made sense for Charlotte to take him with the third pick they took a gamble and he got hurt…. I still think he would have atleast been an average player if he did not get injured.
@Scottoant Eminem is good but there is NO way that he would be as big as he is if he was black(Just look at D-12 lol). I think he is creative and he brings something different to rap. He is definitly on my Top 10 best Rappers list. But I am sure everyone agrees that "some" of those millions and millions of records he has sold are based on the fact that he is a good White Rapper. People have said to my face the only rapper they listen to is Eminem, Is he that unbelievable the he would be the only rapper that they listen too.
Any time you can find a white person that is good at a traditionally black thing then $$$ money in the bank; Boxing, Basketball, Rapping, Dancing, Singing, Poetry the list goes on and on
—Please dont give me negative points just because you think Eminem is the best rapper alive—
