LitteringAnd…ParticipantFirst:
This is mainly directer at FastAndFurious, but also for several others on the ‘RESPECT to Westbrook’ about him coming back early rom injury and playing way better than Rose. Lets have a look at that in itemised fashion shall we?
1. Wut.
2. Are you serious? the two injuries are miles apart, the only similarity being that they are in the knee. Westbrook tore his meniscal cartilage, estially the knees ‘shock absorber/cushion’. These tears are usually millimeters in size and are, if clean, repaired with small sutures or biodegradable screws which allow it to heal back in place. A typical time frame for this is 3 Months to full fitness.3. Rose’s was much more severe, while also tearing his meniscus he completely ruptured (tore) is Anterior Cruciate Ligament, responsible for stabilizing the knee during impact and twisting motions. This is typically a 6-12 month to full fitness, but up to 2 years to fully recover with what must be very gradual recovery. What we’re seeing from Rose know (rust), is proof that he was right to wait, even once the new ligament is fully healed in place and strong (without the complication of the meniscus tear), its can take more that a year to feel like the knee is really stable, and to fully strength the dynamic muscles which keep the knee steady and minimize impact on the ligament.
I just can’t believe the level of uneducated crap people fling at Rose for taking the cautionary route. There is no way you come back from an injury like this in the Playoffs. I say all this because I’ve been through it. I’ve had two ACL reconstructions on my left knee, the first injury also damaged my lateral meniscus. Thankfully the meniscus healed nicely and I was back to football training at about the 8 month mark once the ligament was strong. It still felt a bit odd and hard to trust sprinting and kicking (I’m from Australia = aussie rules football) and in a marking contest with only light contact I landed slightly off-balance and re-injured the ACL, anothe complete tear. Touch-wood I’m ok now and have been playing again for two years but I lost a good yard of pace and general quickness. In all I was out for 2 and a half years.
My point is THIS IS NOT AN INJURY YOU RUSH BACK FROM. So stop criticizing someone for something you don’t understand.

Moon RiverParticipantOverall- I agree with you. Rose’s injury was a serious one and serious enough where you can justify how long it took him to return. And, it is really up to the individual when they feel confident about returning. It is Rose’s decision and his alone.
However, there are other issues which makes it easy to plays devil’s advocate with this situation.
First, why did the Bulls brass release the fact (in March of 2013 I believe) that the team doctors cleared Rose to resume playing? I hated this move by the Bulls, but they leaked the info and clearly were sending a message to Rose to get back on the court.
Second, it was rumored that Rose was the best player at practice shortly after the all-star break and of course there were whispers that other players were questioning why he was OK to practice and appear to be back, but was not good enough to play in the actual games. If you combine this with the fact that there were a good number of players, playing thru injuries of their own (Noah and Hinrich to name only two). The Bulls beat writers consistently said the other players had no problem with Rose practicing, but no playing. That is politically correct PR to me.
Third, don’t discount the bad blood between Rose’s camp and the Bulls management. Rose’s brother came out and blasted the front office for not getting Derrick help. Rose never came out and distanced himself from his brothers comment. He just repeatedly said his relationship with Bulls management was good. Also, BJ Armstrong is Rose’s agent and there is no love lost between Armstrong and the Bulls. Armstrong thought he was in line to the the Bulls GM when they went another direction and hired Paxson. So, Armstrong is certainly not going to do the Bulls in favors.
Lastly, we cannot forget the Thibs/Forman feud either. Thibs knows he needs Rose and Rose likes Thibs. Thibs waited a long time to sign his contract extension and no one really knows why other than to let Foreman twist in the wind a bit. Foreman also fired Thib’s lead assistant over the summer. So there are battle lines drawn there as well.
Overall- again, I agree with you. Derrick returned when he thought he was ready. Comparing it to Westbrook is ridiculous. No issues with that. However, you can certainly see why people were talking about the Rose situation and his physical reasons to return and the non-physical reasons to return.

kngojcParticipantAll of this makes sense. And yeah, as an avid Bulls fan, I was mad to hear that he was cleared to play but wouldn’t. But lets think of it this way. He’s a very humble player who wants to win as bad as anyone. If he came back in the playoffs and was as rusty as he has been at the beginning of this season, he’d do more harm than good to his team. He’d draw the double teams and he would still have doubt in his knee holding up. It was the smart thing for him to wait it out. Because right now, he’s just getting back into playing form so that come the last month of the season, he’s at the top of his game, fully healthy (hopefully), and twice as hungry to prove any remaining doubters wrong that his knee injury took away from his overall game.

jwall1Participantyes, both the injuries were different with Westbrook’s being less severe. The difference was Westbrook returned early, and Rose, although medically cleared, did not. I do not at all like how Rose arrogantly handled his comeback, and as far as Westbrook, I have a lot of respect for him. The kid is hungry!!

druneave3ParticipantThe next step in the rehab process is/was to play. He wouldn’t have been rushing back. His timeline was right on schedule for him to take the next step in the rehab process. That is what every single doctor says. That is what Jamal Crawford and every player who has had the injury has said. Derrick Rose, and his brand protectors chose to delay that process. We are seeing the effects of that delay now.
It isn’t a big deal though. Either he works some of the kinks out last year, or he does it the first month of the season this year. Either way, he will be one of the best players in the NBA. I do however think he developed more a mental hurdle by sitting out and allowed for more time to ponder, wonder, and establish and build doubt. He should have listened to doctors. There is a reason they are…..doctors.
