M-DYMESParticipantIf you were guaranteed that your team would either get the 8th seed in the playoffs or the 1st overall pick (finishing last as well) what would you pull for? Kinda depends on who your favorite team is i guess but I’d imagine alot of people would be pulling for that 1st overall pick.

DanEboyParticipantIf the pick was guaranteed, then yes, give me a potential franchise player over a first round playoff loss.

Anton123ParticipantSure the number one pick, if the 8th seeds knew they would get the first pick if they fell out of the playoffs, they’d surely do so.
Imagine Portland or Toronto with John Wall, though f Bosh went away Toronto would probably still suck maybe a 6-7th seed in the east.
But Portland would have a really scary backcourt in Wall and Roy, they’d be contending for the 1st spot in the west I guess0 - Posted on: Thu, 03/25/2010 - 7:32am #269700

UKWildcat_11ParticipantThe Blazers would destroy in a few years if they somehow ended up with Wall…they and the Thunder would be 2 of the top teams in the West (Assuming Oden gets healthy)

SlimParticipantplayoffs
franchise players can come from anywhere, why tank and end up with a Larue Martin (look it up)

Anton123ParticipantMartin has been cited as the worst first overall draft pick in NBA history.
Wow how is this guy never in the all time bust list talk?

QUINCEYthis is one reason owners shouldnt get more money if they are tanking..when you dont make the playoffs you lose out on millions and millions of dollars. if owners do tank then they cant complain about redoing things so players can get less money
tankers are usually guys who either never really played on a competitive level which is what most owners are or fans who also never really played competitively

wowthisisneatParticipantsome of you are reading the question wrong. its either worst team in league or 8 seed. so you guys would really rather be the nets than the tblazers this year?

NashyMingParticipantGetting the 8th seed this year would simply be a 0-4 blow out by the Lakers or the Cavs. Getting the 1st overall mean John Wall, a player to build on for many years to come.

midwestbbscoutParticipantI am a Bulls fan at heart even though I try to mask it somewhat when I’m working…..I would say that I would rather have a top 5 pick than the 8th seed…..instead of getting beatdown by Lebron they can be working on ways to get better…..Getting a Cousins/Favors/Turner go a long way towards that….the combination of one of those guys with D-Wade would give them a legitimate big 3 that could challenge for multiple titles in the future….

doubledribblerParticipantI think it depends on the team. It might not be the worst thing for a veteran team because it might signal that it is time to blow things up and start over. That would be a team like San Antonio, but they are obviously doing what they can every year to compete. They had to have an injury filled season just to luck out and be able to pick up Tim Duncan. It would probably be good for a team like the Bulls. They could use a cheap highly talented piece to put with whatever guy the grab in free agency. That’s not going to help Lebron stay in Cleveland if they have the worst record in the league, but it’s probably going to give the Knicks fans more hope if they just bottomed out and got the first pick. Some teams it would be a bad sign for. I think for Portland even with injuries that would be a giant step back or even a young team like OKC, because that would say they are not progressing at the rate that you want.
8th isn’t a bad spot if you have the talent to still compete or if it’s a young team building it’s way towards becoming a strong team. Playoff games are nice because all the competition is high level and the games and atmosphere are completely different. Getting the first pick depends on who is in the draft and a lot of GMs have shown us that picking number one isn’t always a sure thing. Guys like Danny Granger fall into the middle of the first round, while useful guys like Carl Landry and former all star Gilbert Arenas are productive 2nd rounders. David Lee was a late first rounder that any playoff team could have added. When you are a bad team and you add a good player, it doesn’t have the same impact as a good team adding a good player. Think Joe Dumars with the wasted Darko pick. That team is probably still competing if not for that one move.
