JNixonParticipantACC:
-Tyler Zeller will be a double digit scorer and a guy who gives you solid production in the blocked shots and rebound categories. I look for him to be a 2nd Team all-conference player.
-While everyone is really excited about Nolan Smith and Kyrie Irving in Duke backcourt, look for Seth Curry to be another all-conference player. Also look for him to be Newcomer of the Year in the conference.
– Kyle Singler is my choice for National Player of the Year.
– Maryland was a tourny team last year, as were Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Clemson. Look for all 4 to be NIT teams next year.
– UNC, Virginia Tech, and N.C. State will make the tourny after being NIT teams last year.
– Look for Fr. K.T. Harrell at Virginia to be one of the top scorers in the ACC immediately for Virginia. I expect about 15 ppg from him with 4 rpg and 2 apg chipped in for a talent depleted squad.
– Malcolm Delaney will once again pace the ACC in scoring next year. Look for Reggie Jackson of Boston College to be 2nd though.
– Paul Hewitt of Georgia Tech and Frank Haith of Miami will be fired at the end of this season.

WizardofOzParticipantMy BOLD prediction for the ACC is that Maryland will once again surpass expectations and will finish 3rd in the ACC behind Duke and North Carolina, and they will get a pretty high NCAA Tournamenet seed. I’m a little bias, but it happens every year. People say after every year that Maryland is worse than the year before and that they will not make the NCAA Tournament, but yet they always surprise people and make the NCAA Tournament. If it wasn’t for the buzzre beater Michigan St. hit on them, they would have been in the Sweet 16. Everybody is saying that Maryland will be a much worse team from last season because of the loss of Greivis Vasquez, but Gary Williams always finds a way to make his players play well. Teams coached by him always overachieve. Look for them to surprise people this season.

JNixonParticipantThey simply do not have the players capable of being the 3rd best team in the ACC. They are probably the 6th best team in the conference. They also have legit questions at every spot other than SG and C. I’d be super surprised if they were a tourny team, much less the 3rd best team.

stanford hoops@wiz i was about to say the same thing..every time people in the nation under estimate us we do much better then expected. theres been ,many years when people have said we dont have the players or no stars or blah blah blah but never take into account that we have a HOF coach. last year i recall we were suppossed to finish in the middle of the pack yet we won the conference title. It will be funny once again when we make them look like fools. Just like last year when the so called experts thought unc would finish very high

Im Your FatherParticipantAs a Duke fan, Maryland is definitely always the team that you think you can write off and then ends up upsetting you. The glory days of maryland may be gone, but Williams is still a great coach and his teams always overperform.
Maryland seems like the opposite of NC State. NC State often seems like they will be good, but they never are, or at least not since Sendek left. Gary Williams teams often seems like they will be mediocre and then end up shocking people.
I respect Maryland’s program, but that being said, I hate them and I hope they lose every game this year.

stanford hoopslol..i feel the same way about duke but you are absolutly right about maryland. Every single year we are predicted to be worst then we end up being. i recall the year we had david neal starting at center, that team had barley any nationally noticed talent yet we still made it to the second round of the tournament. I think we were predicted to finish almost last that year. After watch maryland play the other night i actually have higher expectations then i once had during the summer because of how much better shane mosley and chris tucker has gotten. i always knew tucker could play( im sure Ga tech remebers him;) and im very suprised at how good stogin looked and of course jordan williams is a beast known nationally. Alot of people underestimate teams for lack of talent but never take into account, whos coaching the team. That flex offense , when ran correctly, works against the best of teams even if you dont have alot of talent

ghettosermonParticipantMaryland lost their 3 best players Vasquez, Hayes, and Milbourne. Jordan Williams might be a beast and Mosely should pick up their scoring but their backcourt and frontcourt depth simply isn’t good enough. Virginia tech should be the surprise team in the ACC. Dorenzo Hudson and Malcolm Delaney is one of the best backcourt duo’s in the nation and Jeff Allen is one of the more solid bigs in the conference. J.T. Thompson and Terell Bell are both solid contributors.

Im Your FatherParticipantWhat does everyone think about North Carolina State? They have a ton of talent this year, but I’m hesitant to pick them to do all that well, because no one knows to underachieve like Sidney Lowe.

Im Your FatherParticipantHewitt is ok and definitely a better coach than Lowe, but he has had some fantastic talent and hasn’t exactly set the world on fire. He’s a great recruiter, but rarely does he do anything with his talent. He’s pretty much the opposite of Gary Williams. I’m not sure he deserves to keep his job. He seems like a pretty good guy though.

JNixonParticipantWhen has Maryland had the mediocre talent like they do this year and been a top 3 team? Last year they had Vazquez, Hayes, and Milbourne. Without Vazquez, Maryland would’ve been a VERY mediocre to even worse team. Now, they actually are without him. I’m not sold on them being a top 3 team. They look like an NIT team. And if you look at Maryland’s recent track record when they’ve had mediocre talent (or a pre-dominant Vazquez), they were an NIT team.
Also, many where starting to wonder if Williams should’ve been on the hot seat in past years. Last year they overachieved because Vazquez saved their butts a bunch. I don’t see anyone on their roster with the takeove ability Vazquez had.

stanford hoopsNo one ever sees guys on the roster who will step up the next year but they do. Drew Nichols did it after putting up 7ppg the year before. Same with Elliot,Chris mccray, the big african with the Afro who’s name ecapes me. Only fans aren’t too suprised by the end of the year. Every year and this won’t be any different more than likely. Someone always steps up. No one thought David Neal would put up 15ppg after averaging 5 or so the year before. Even the duke fan knows Maryland will be better then predicted

JNixonParticipantThat still won’t make them a tourny team I don’t think. That’s nice that Duke fans think they’ll be better than predicted. I do too I’d say. Alot of people are questioning their talent as a whole and have them in the bottom half of the conference. If Gary Williams gets Maryland to the tourny next year, that would be a huge overachievement. Maryland’s roster is not that of a tourny team.
I think people are either overrating Maryland’s coaching or underrating the loss of Vazquez. Or both. They aren’t just going to be able to bounce back after losing Vazquez like that. They don’t have anyone on that roster that can take over like he did. Vazquez was as important to Maryland last year, if not MUCH more, than any player in the nation. He saved their butts so much that it’s not even funny. They probably would’ve been a .500 team or less without him. And I question whether their frosh and returning players will grow up enough to replace. In fact, I don’t question it. I know they aren’t good enough.

stanford hoopsOverrating gary williams coaching?..Ummmm no youre the only one underrating it. he has won before vasquez and he will win after. Hes won with much less talent then he has now. eveer year we have some one who steps up like i said before. People said the same thing after juan dixon left and low and behold drew nichols stepped up to become all acc after being a bench player before. And duke players understand because they have seen maryland all there lives and they know not to underestimate them like you are. If i recall you under estimated them last year as well. Just like years before when we lost a top player someone else steps up. Gary is a Hall of Fame coach for a reason and its not because of Vasquez. I dont know where we will finish and every one has a opinion but those who constantly watch maryland knows not to count us out and college basketbll never plays out like people think like last year with unc and illinois. both were projected to be good but both didnt live up to expectations

JNixonParticipantIf you think Maryland will be the 3rd best team in the ACC because Gary Williams on the sideline alleviates losing the MVP of the conference, then yes. You are overrating his coaching. Maryland was an NIT team 2 out of the past 4 years. It’s not like he gets his teams to the tourny just by being on the sideline. Maryland has very average talent and no true star to take over games on a consistent basis like Vazquez did for the past 2 years. I like Maryland as the 6th best team in the ACC, but I’m not going to put them higher because there are serious concerns about their talent. If Maryland is the 3rd best team in the ACC as WizardofOz projected, then people probably need to worship him like they do Jesus.

nbaretroParticipantI think Maryland will take somewhat of a step back, because the talent in the ACC and the fact, I think they have a couple tough teams non conference ( Pitt, Illnois/Texas). I think Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Florida State and Virgina Tech might sweep them this season.
I also believe those tossup games are now not in favor of Maryland simply because they lack the experience they once had with Vasquez and other seniors on the roster.

JNixonParticipantOh I’ve watched them play. That’s basically how I’m forming my opinion that they won’t be 3rd place. lol
I don’t remember that, but hey it’s last year. This is now.
Good to see you have confidence in your team. It doesn’t mean they will be a tourny team though. I personally think 4th place and over is overachieving for them. Recent seasons show that Coach Williams has fielded NIT teams when his team lacks true tourny talent. Seasons like the one coming up.
