CynthiaParticipantAt least eight people were shot downtown shortly after the Thunder game let out Monday night, police said.About 11:35 p.m., shots were reportedly fired on Reno Avenue between Mickey Mantle Drive and Joe Carter Avenue, about three blocks east of Chesapeake Energy Arena.“Preliminary reports indicate that eight people were shot and one person suffered blunt trauma, and that person was a pregnant woman,” Oklahoma City police Capt. Dexter Nelson said.“Everything is very, very preliminary. We still don’t know the actual number of victims. We believe that one person is critical, and the other injuries are not believed to be life-threatening,” Nelson said.By NewsOK.com—————————————————————————Apparently within minutes after the game there was a scuffle and shots were fired into the thousands of people walking away from the arena. Police took in two guys who some witnesses said "drove off suspiciously". But no word has been said if they’re legit suspects or not.0 - Posted on: Tue, 05/22/2012 - 2:22am #672462

KayjayParticipantIs wrong with people in todays society? People can’t even watch a game and go home peacefully now?

For_Never_EverParticipantI thought OKC was a really nice peacfull city compared to my. But I heard they started having a Latino gang problem recently, gangs in general are all stupid retarded people.

jerb2011ParticipantAfter the game, some guys and girls got into a scuffle and the guys opened fire, I hate this is made national news…

The Scare Crow RisesParticipantAnd between the Republican Right Wing gun Nuts and the migrating Gang members from Cali/Mexico OKC is not the place people think it is…There are huge gangs issues there, Utah, Colorado and Texas, not to mention Cali and New Mexico…The gang problem has even reached Alaska, Oregon and Washington State…I’m actually shocked people thought OKC was such a nice place too live, Now St. Paul and Green Bay are nice places to live

CynthiaParticipantRealistically just about every big city in the world has violence. Some obviously more than others, but there’s so many bad people out there that no city is truely ‘safe’ as some might think. You just never know when stuff like this can happen.
I also disagree with the gang assumptions being made in this thread. Just because there’s a shooting doesn’t mean it’s gang related. Any event where liquor is involved is a potential danger. This was more likely a case of people drunk out of their mind and taking some bad-mouthing a bit too far.

TallmanNYCParticipantI’m guessing so many people got shot because it was a large crowd and the shooter while not hitting his target couldn’t fail to hit bystanders.
There is violence everywhere and a huge gun culture and lots of armed folks in the south. The bigger cities in America are actually becoming less violent on a per capita basis.

GronounoursParticipant"Any event where liquor is involved is a potential danger." Wow! So each time someone drinks too much, you fear a shooting? This is pretty ridiculous.

Allen_Iverson_3ParticipantDo you know what the word "potential" means?
0 - Posted on: Tue, 05/22/2012 - 7:12am #672544

GronounoursParticipantI think I know, yes. But assuming that the shooting is simply the result of drunk people "taking some bad-mouthing a bit too far" seems ludicrous to me. You don’t shoot at people simply because you’re drunk. I’ve seen a lot of drunk people and I used to be an enthousiast drinker myself, I’ve never witnessed or committed a shooting. You could as well argue that "hey, some guy had a bad day and started shooting; that’s how tired people act, they just can’t help it".

DurantsWingspanThis has nothing to do with alcohol. Alcohol might make you more likely to do things you normally wouldn’t, but shooting isn’t one of them. If you don’t mind shooting someone drunk, you don’t mind shooting someone sober, simple as that. I hate when people either blame stuff on alcohol or drugs or use it as an excuse.

Krypt GussParticipantIt’s potentially dangerous because it’s in HICKS VILLE. WITH ALL THE NRA GUN NUTS!

mgreener_34ParticipantThis happens all the time guys, and this story comes up every year when Team X beats Team Y or wins whatever championship they’re playing for. I live in UConn, and when the Huskies won the national championship a year ago people literally ran outside and just started punching people and doing stupid **** like kicking out car windows. Happens all the time. Same thing happened when the Sox won the world series. I literally saw people flipping cars. Now those things aren’t gun fights, but for me violence and sports kind of go hand and hand at some points.

BA30ParticipantAlthough it may be unlikely that the 2 are unrelated, this quite possibly could have nothing to do with the OKC game. I don’t think it is fair to assume just because people were leaving the arena at that time this has anything to do with the game. Violence and sports go hand in hand? I don’t see how you are grouping the two together like that. Yes there may be some violent events that take place when adrenaline gets flowing, but that can happen anywhere at anytime.

DurantsWingspanI just can not believe that Angelica (I mean cynthia) is stupid enough to actually think that this was more likely to be caused by alcohol than gangs. Are you freaking kidding? Yeah people get violent after sporting events like kicking over cars, starting fights at the worst. But shooting? No that just doesnt happen. How can you act like this is just because of fans at the game being drunk. That is so dumb. It oviously has nothing to do with angry fans. Angry fans don’t shoot people. Drunk people don’t shoot people. People shoot people for personal or gang related reasons. this is why girls shouldnt talk about sports. You give them a bad name.

bloodshyParticipantOK people… chill out. More than one person tossed this crap out in this thread, which is complete nonsense. I doubt that the perpetrators here were connected to the NRA or politically affiliated at all. Moreover, it’s highly unlikely that the gun used was even legally owned. Don’t make this a political issue. This is a tragic incident that happened because bad people made bad choices. Politics have nothing to do with it. Being right or left wing (or pro gun rights vs. pro gun control) says nothing about whether you’re more or less likely to be a criminal. The reality is, gangs and bad people who don’t care about politics tend to commit violent crimes.
Additionally, many people in this thread have a false notion of what makes a region safe. The USA’s gun crime rates have a strong inverse correlation to the strength of gun control laws. (Places where guns aren’t legally allowed, more gun crime occurrs.) When DC’s handgun ban dropped, gun crime rates in the city went from worst in the nation to 1960s levels. Since Chicago increased its gun ban (now the toughest in the nation), gun crime has increased to the highest of any city in America. When gun bans happen, only the law abiding citizens give up their guns. It creates a playground for the criminal elements.
Killers target places where they won’t find resistence. School killings and killings in places where guns aren’t allowed (England, Norway, etc.) have had huge body counts because no one can defend themselves. Where people can legally carry weapons, these types of crimes are less common and tend to have smaller body counts. In Salt Lake City (where it’s relatively easy to get concealed carry permits) a guy decided to go on a a killing spree in a big mall a couple of years ago. He had an AK-47 and a few hand guns and he intended to maximize his body count. Within a minute of firing his first shot he had citizens shooting back at him. I believe the total body count ended up being 2, including the murderer.
Bad stuff happens everywhere, but it is a statistical reality that where guns are illegal, more people die from gun violence. I’ve done substantial statistical analysis on this issue and the reality of gun crime rates in America is almost the exact opposite of what millions of people believe.
BTW, I’m not a gun owner and I don’t ever plan to be.

GronounoursParticipantWhat you say about the inverse correlation is very interesting. The US has a much higher homicide rate (5/100,000) than other developped countries (1 or 2), and 68% of these homicides are committed with guns. Also, a gun in the home is 22 times more likely to be used in a completed or attempted suicide, criminal assault or homicide, or unintentional shooting death or injury than to be used in a self-defense shooting. (Kellermann, 1998)
It seems pretty obvious to me that if more people are armed, more deaths occur. That’s what statistics between countries tell. Could it be that banning guns in one American state doesn’t have the same effect because you can easily buy a gun in a neighoring state?
