It seems like just yesterday that everyone was talking about the exciting mixtape displaying the amazing athletic skills of then 8th grader Seventh Woods..Now that 8th grader is a senior in high school and just announced that his college choice will be UNC..Woods will be joining center Tony Bradley and sg Brandon Robinson in UNC 2016 Class…Woods announcement is a major coup for Roy Williams and his staff has who seen rival Duke add Harry Giles & Jack Tatum.Williams can now focus on Word of God(NC) Transfer Rawle Alkins ,like Woods Alkins is a powerful guard with the potential to be a lockdown defender.

Woods said UNC was his dream school since 7th grade.

 As a UNC fan, I am glad he commited.  This would have been a huge shot to the ego if Roy had not reeled him in and would have followed the narrative of Brandon Ingram and PJ Dozier as kids that in other circumstances (academic scandal) would have likely been Heels.

I have watched Woods over the past few years, and in my opinion the only thing holding him back from being a one and done is his mentality.  He really wants to be a pure PG, but that IMHO is not playing to the strengths he was blessed with.  He can get to the rim whenever he wants to, his 3 point shooting is not as bad as people say, and he may be the fastest player end to end in the class (really impressive considering the athletes this class has).  

When he just focuses on his strengths, IMHO he is a top 15 player in the class.  I watched him drop 40 points on Dennis Smith, and also completely dominate fellow UNC commitment Jalek Felton over the summer (I don’t think Felton scored on him).  When he doesn’t play to his strengths (focusing on being a pure PG), he gets dominated by guys like Devontae Schuler who have no business outplaying him.

If we do wiff on Alkins (who I am really high on), I hope that Roy will start him at the 2-guard and tell him to worry about 2 things, putting the ball in the hoop and being a lockdown defender, not to worry about distribuiting or trying to impress NBA scouts with PG abilities.

Side note.  A big hat tip to Roy Williams.  Amidst an academic scandal and some really heavy negative recruiting from other schools, UNC is now sitting with the number 4 ranked class in the country in spite of the circumstances.

 This is massive for Carolina.  UNC now has Tony Bradley, Brandon Robinson and Seventh Woods.  I believe there is light at the end of the tunnel in terms of the academic scandal and that UNC basketball will receive no penalties.  Guys obviously have trust again in UNC and Roy Williams.  I am really on the fence about Seventh in terms of basketball SKILL.  Obviously he’s an explosive athlete.  Of course people will compare him to another explosive guy UNC had, Dexter Strickland.  Strick never really developed his skill in 4 years at Carolina and that was stunning to me.  His jumper his senior year looked the same as his jumper his freshman year.  It kind of worries me that UNC really didn’t develop him skill wise during his time in Chapel Hill.  Will Seventh be Strickland 2.0?  I agree he’s not a point.  Joel Berry should start next year with the departure of Marcus.  I think Seventh will start at the 2 unless Rawle Alkins commits.  Seventh will thrive in UNC’s uptempo attack with his elite athleticism.  Props for Carolina going from signing just 2 fringe 100 guys for this class in Luke Maye and Kenny Williams to getting 3 top 50 guys.  I think getting Rawle would be the icing on the cake.  It sounds like he really loves Carolina and has a great relationship with Roy.

He really contributed very well in the post-season.  The offense looked a lot more smooth with him in the game, he looked a lot more comfortable on his drives.  When he gets in the lane, he is able to finish really well due to his 195 lbs frame.  Had he stayed in the game against Wisconsin instead of Roy having a lapse of judgement and putting Nate Britt in with about 7 minutes left, I contend UNC would have been in the elite 8.  Wisky was struggling with him.  Also heard he was the MVP of their secret scrimmage against Vandy.

I worry about his outside shot.  Going back to Strickland, he shot the ball from over his head.  He had the same shooting stroke for all 4 years and never corrected it.  I think he has the UNC record for most banked in 3’s in his career.  From what I’ve seen from Woods, his outside shot is much better than Strickland’s now.  Once you go from high school, where you are just more physically gifted than everyone and can do basically anything you want, to college, where guys are just as athletic as you, you have to be able to hit an outside shot.  Will Woods be McCants or Wayne Ellington?? No.  But he has to be able to hit a mid-range J consistently to keep guys from sagging off of him and playing him for the drive consistently.  The mix-tapes are fools gold because guys he is playing against in high school are not as athletic, big, strong or fast as him and he can basically just do whatever he wants on every play.  Woods jumper looks solid and his mechanics are good.  I think one of the big keys for this years team is Theo Pinson and his jumper.  Last year he hit some, but you could tell his shoot needed a lot of work.  Hopefully Hubert spent countless hours with him in the gym this summer working on his mechanics.  He hit some threes in the scrimmage at late night and his form looked good.  Can he keep it up though?  Hitting threes in a glorified scrimmage is not the same and nailing a dagger three late in a game on the road against a rivel ACC opponent.
