So obviously the 76ers are going to be at the top of the lottery again this year, but how far away are they from competing for a playoff spot? They don’t have an even remotely talented guard on the roster, but they have a core of Noel, Okafor, Embiid (if he gets healthy), Saric (when he leaves Turkey), and whoever they get in this year’s draft. They won’t win any championships in the near future, but could they contend for the 8th seed in the East next year, or will they just continue to tank?

The might need to cash in on the Saric chip.  Whatever his supposed "upside" is, well, it is still overseas.  Not here yet.  What does he DO?  SOUNDS like a good all-around role player at the forward spot.  But, if they get Ben Simmons then BS would do that role.

Saric might have good trade value in this draft.  There should be solid guys at least through the early second round.

I would cash in if I were them, and if I ended up with something nice like Ben Simmons and Buddy Hield along with their other draft picks.

If I could get a couple of decent young guys, a mid-first round pick this year, and some future assets I think I might pull the trigger on a deal.

ESPECIALLY if I could get Kris Dunn with a package of mid/late firsts this year and the rights to Dario Saric.

Ish smith has looked good but i think this team desperately needs a PG of the future. They should get murray or dunn unless they get 1st pick.

Murray isn’t much of a point guard. He’s more of an off the ball player.

That’s hard to tell given his role at Kentucky. Obviously he’s been playing off the ball with Ulis running the point but that doesn’t mean he can’t play more point  if given the freedom to do so.

Russell and Valentine played off the ball as well and posted much higher assist rates than Murray.

clutch gene, great leadership potential,…………… can shoot the 3 but can also get to the rim…. excellent passer can play either the 1 or 2 the;………….. excellent court vision………… & does not need to be ball dominant….

espn is already moving him up to #4 on their mock draft & I agree……  world of potential……  So he can & prob will be a PG at the next level…. Great decision maker…..

The NBA is turning into a jump shooting league.  They need players who can shoot.  Look at Milwaukee, talented roster but in today’s game you need some floor spacing.  They still have many moves to make.

Murray cant break anyone down off the dribble. Can’t play D either. How is he going tobbe a PG if he cant drive the lane

They will be close to last or last place next year. They will have the potential. But will just be to young and the players are still going to be developing. The year after is when I think the fireworks start for them and they make a playoff push.

In 2 years the 76ers should be competing for a playoff spot. Most likely missing but competing no less.

With Colangelo in place the roster will start taking shape this off season. 1 more season of losing but not outright tanking (not sure how you start a season with the caliber of guards they did) will land 1 more top 5 Draft pick and you go from there.

With some luck they land Simmons or Ingram this year. After the draft lottery you’ll know where you stand and if your getting the Lakers pick as well at 4 or 5. Now Colangelo starts earning his check.

#1 you pick your guy. If it’s Ingram, he’s your SF with Covington and you don’t even worry about having too much with Noel and maybe Saric at PF and with Oakafor and maybe Embiid at C. Because those are still big ifs. Then your looking for guards with the MIA and OKC picks. Trading them, picking players whatever. If Simmons is your guy same thing but he can certainly play some PF too, so you have more options and potential lineups and positional diversity. Ingram should give you some of that as well though with him and Covington at the SG and or SF spots.

#2 pick you take the guy that’s left, easy.

So with a top 2 pick your front court looks promising adding Simmons or Ingram to Noel and Oakafor. Saric next year or worse case the year after at more money. Embiid who knows?

Possible Lakers pick #4 or #5. We could debate whether it should be Bender, Brown, Dunn, Murray or whomever but if the pick conveys, you just have to get it right. Even if that’s trading the pick because who you really wanted is gone. Continue earning that check and reputation Colangelo.

Even with the added potential star player, your still in the lottery after next season. You’ve learned if you can count on Embiid. You’ve hopefully seen Saric for a year. An while I don’t expect him to be a star, he certainly should be a good player. Oakafor develops and you have Noel to resign or trade. Add another top pick and you build.

Maybe 2 years from now is too optimistic to contend for a playoff spot but 3 years is certainly manageable. With the players and picks Hinkie has already amassed and smart and savy maneuvers from Colangelo management is the key. That’s year 5 or 6 from when Hinkie took over a disaster of a franchise.

Side note: I hope the Twolves management gets it right as well. Wiggins and Towns were no brainers. Let’s see what they do this off season.

Everything depends on the draft. They could come away with Ingram (their pick), Murray (Lakers’ pick), Grayson Allen (Heat’s pick) and Levert (OKC’s pick). Add Saric and Embiid to that draft haul and I could see them at the level the Wolves are now which would be good enough to make a run at the 8th seed in the east.

The East improved quite a bit this season so I think that hurts the Sixers chances of competing next season. There are so many ifs to the Sixers while there only a few players of any quality who will definitely return.

    The IFs

-IF the Sixers get a top 2 pick and they choose either Ben Simmons or Brandon is Ingram they should improve more in the short term and long term.

-IF the ping pong balls fall in their favor and they can get The Lakers pick at 4 or 5 that would be significant.

-IF they draft well with their other two first founders they could add quality pieces to help solidify their rotation.

-IF they retain Ish Smith that should help them.

-IF Dario Saric comes over and Joel Embiid is healthy the 76ers should improve vastly.

-IF Jerry Colangelo has the clout to draw a good free agent it could really help the team.

No matter what happens I imagine major overhaul to the 76ers in the offseason. No one is truly untouchable, but I doubt they deal Nerlens Noel or Jahlil Okafor unless Joel Embiid returns and lives up to his pre-injuries hype. The 76ers only have three guys under contract at seasons end that I don’t see falling out of the rotation even if every possibility the 76ers get works out perfectly and those three are Jahlil Okafor, Nerlens Noel, and Robert Covington. I could see 2/3rds or 3/4ths of the team being new when the season starts next year and I imagine the 76ers are a lot better, but they’ll have to be insanely fortunate to be a playoff team next year.

Once they figure out who the two stars are they want to build around are they can trade pieces to build around them. The team could look really different in 2 years if they trade some young stars for veteran talent or just talent that better fits the team scheme. Which right now we don’t even know what it will be.
