Connor Vanover has grown from 6’6 to 7’1 within the last 9 months and his stock nationally has risen as well. The 8th grader from Little Rock, Arkansas currently plays with the Arkansas Wings 2017′s on the circuit. We have heard about Vanover for sometime now but was able to get our first look at him in live action last weekend at the John Lucas International Middle School Combine in Houston.

Vanover has as much upside as anyone in the country. As you can see from the photo, he still must fill out his body but that will come. Connor has the main ingredient for any basketball player that you must have and can never take away, A SKILL SET.

Strength and speed will come as he reaches 16-18 years old but right now Vanover has a feathery soft touch. He is a nightmare for opponents in pick and pop situations as he can step out and hit the trey ball just as consistent as he knocks down the mid range jump shot. Vanover is so long that defenders at this age can’t bother him when he gets the ball in a scoring position as he can get his shot off over anyone at anytime. When going against a player such as Vanover the game plan would be usually to push him off the block and make him play away from the rim, but that is to his advantage.

Connor has a skill set of above average ball handling, very good shooter, and high basketball IQ that will not leave him. However, he must improve on some weaknesses in his game. Vanover isn’t the fastest up and down the floor hence he doesn’t excel in the uptempo game. He is a good defensive rebounder and alters tons of shots but must be more aggressive on the offensive end rebounding the basketball.

"International MIDDLE SCHOOL Combine?" I’m surprised people don’t at least let some of these kids in the states get to high school first. Wait until around junior year of high school and injuries, drugs, politics, bad coaching, grades (just kidding), etc knocks a lot of these kids out of contention for playing basketball at higher levels.

    The next Thon Maker?

Who knows at that age.  The kid isn’t getting any shorter, so he will most likely go to school for free, if nothing else.

I have to say, as a former center, it bums me out a little to see guys this size shooting threes.  Work on a sky hook, kid.  Kareem did OK with that shot.

That’s what I basically mean. A tall kid makes outside shots on the internet and everyone starts to drool.

Highlight films and mix tapes fool amateur analysts.

Very dangerous for an 8th grader to be 7’1".

Seems like a thyroid problem. Bad history with players over 7’2". Only Kareem didn’t retire early or completely suck.

my friend Kenny George who was 7’7" had to retire after college due to gigantism.

I hope this kid is the exception

The kid has a nice touch for someone his age and has good co-ordination for someone so tall. His 3 point range is a bit false as due to his height advantage he’s almost taking unchallenged shots at this stage.

He’ll be interesting to follow but he is only 14 or so, maybe he’s best left to enjoy HS and his teenage years then the real coverage can start when he is HS Junior or Senior and looking at colleges.

Yeah. This kids in trouble. Hes 14 years old? And he’s that tall… no way he doesn’t have problems down the road. Hopefully he is healthy and just has really tall family genetics. But all that aside, as far as basketball skill goes, to jump on a point someone else made on this thread, why is this kid shooting 3’s? Why aren’t his coaches teaching him to be a dominant player on the block? I don’t get it. They say he was 6’6" and grew to 7’1" over the last year but a 6’6" 13 year old should dominate in the post against middle schoolers. He is the skinniest kid I’ve ever seen. Lol. Thon Maker is thin but this kid is beyond skinny. At least Thon is a good athlete also. Again, this kid, looks like he has lots of trouble moving around. Hopefully he stops growing now(unlikely) and has the next 4 years to get his body caught up and for him to get used to it.

Yep was at Cal then transferred to Arkansas. He reminds me of Luke Kornet in that he is 7fter (As Rob said 7’3) that can shoot from the outside and isn’t a great defender (needs to add strength and can’t guard on perimeter/pick and roll due to lack of quickness), but can protect the rim with his length.
