A bit too much for Amir. I was expecting like 5 years 27 million or something like that.

Is he supposed to be their starting PF along with Bargnani at the 5?
Toronto might be the worst team in the league next year.

A lot of money for the first big off the bench, He wont start. Good hustle guy though got almost 10 boards a game last year.

Amir Johnson is going to be a solid player, he is a solid rebounder and shot blocker. I look for him to put up around 12 pts and 8.5 boards, he’s not Chris Bosh, but he’s a lot better player than his numbers indicate, he’s also only 22 years old.

I was hoping we would re-sign him.

But this is probably for too much… I agree that $5M per year would have been perfect.

Have Raptors management have learnt nothing in the past year? It’s 100% better to lose a player than to overpay.

I wouldn’t give Amir Johnson 34 millions reasons why he’s not worth $34 million. He’s a bench player. And an average one at that.

The Raptors are that desperate knowing they are going to lose Bosh, I feel sorry for Raptors fans first losing Carter, signing Hedo, losing Bosh and now this.

Worse than the Darko contract by far. Bryan Colangelo is driving that franchise into the ground.

    Amir who?

Weren’t good players getting the mid-level exception last year? Now players most people have never heard of are getting long-term deals…. What a difference a year makes.

I completely agree with Joe Wolf. He might be overpaid but he does a lot that game stats don’t show. He is a hustle player and brings a lot of energy to the Raptors. I have watching most games for the Raptors and you can see he plays his heart out whenever he is on the court. He is one of those players you love to see play.

today has to be the worst day of free agency ever, i mean someone might as well offer shawn bradley 20 million for 3 years and scott pollard 30 million for 5

Id much rather have Amir Johnson then Andris Biedrins (whom so many of you are so high on). Johnson is gonna make an average of just over 6.5 mil per over the course of his deal and Biedrins is making 9 mil per with the warriors. If those players were to play heads up in a game situation… my moneys on Johnson and he has a cheaper contract. Its a solid signing, but not a great one.

a bit overpayed but o well…. and really how the hell are Knick fans talking and making jokes??????? Jerome James, Eddy Curry,Chris Duhon etc…. at least Amir is still young… and most of what he does doesn’t show up in the boxscore plus early on in the year he was only gettin VERY limited minutes so his per game stats are killed by that… yes it was too much money for him but at the sametime he is 23 and plays hard… how many times have we said that about any player on the Knicks in that last few years… David Lee only player with any hustle… and to be honest if there wasn’t soo many great free agents out there knicks would have gave him more then that lmao knowing the way u guys spend… Allan houston 100 mil????? really??? basketball mecca my ass

I agree with most of you. Great to have him resigned .. but for way too much. He was super productive when he did play around 6 and 5, with lots of D. He has a lot of potential left. Super athletic, big (tall and long), and developing really well. Here is a projection. I Calderon starts, AJ will blow up, and this will look like a great signing. Last year near the end he was tearing it up with Jose. If someone else plays most of the pg minutes, this could be like a Varejo signing (super useful guy to have, but paid pretty high for an energy guy who gets bumped to the bench in the presence of good talent).

@SpencerisHawesome2 do you think what he did in 5 games can hold up an entire 82 game season? not likely.

I think Amir is probably worth 25 mil to 30 mil for 5 years. 34 mil is certainly overpaying.

It’s nothing new, BC’s history showed you that he just overpaid players for no reason. He doesn’t know how to manage a team with salary cap. He just loves to give out other people’s money (it’s MLSE money, he doesn’t care anyway).

He just doesn’t know how to efficiently use the cap space. This is disappointing, but Amir is a solid player. He’s still 22, and he can further develop into a near all-star level player (he has that potentially). He’s the same age as Wesley Johnson and had been in the league for 5 years. He didn’t get much playtime until he came to Toronto, so he can still prove his worth. It is certainly overpaying base on past performance, but then if he can develop to near all-star level, then he can become a bargain.

I just think BC didn’t play this out to his favor and outbidding himself right out of the free agency period gate. He did that every year like offering that crazy contract to Kapono and Turkoglu. Let’s hope it won’t backfire this time.

Way too much money. Teams are reaching with some of these deals. Overspending, and a lot of these deals are coming back to hurt these teams wait and see.

He has to overpay to get players. With Johnson, Bargnani, Ed Davis, and Solomon Alabi the Raptors have a very young, pretty inexpensive post unit with some potential immediately in the wake of losing Bosh. If he gave him 34, its because somebody more attractive to play for was going to give him 30 probably. I really think it depends largely on Johnson, because there are just some guys who get that guaranteed contract and coast the rest of thier careers. He showed something in his limited starting time, he is young, and his position is now wide open.

Its too much money, but they had to do something so it makes a little sense. Big men get overpaid…fact.

Just curious why you would say no one wants to go to Toronto. There are the elite markets but after that most of the players talk about how great Toronto is. Second for everyone that is sayng they overpaid, with the improvement he showed last year, because 90% of you didn’t know who he was before last year he could end up being a real steal at 6.5 mil in a couple years

Hey Canesboy I think you are incorrect in your setiment saying that nobody wants to play in Toronto.

And I’ve said it before, Bryan Colangelo is the most over rated GM in the NBA. His dad built the Phoenix Suns not him. I wish the Raptors front office would just fire him now.

I guess Amir got his christmas present early I guess they see potential in the 18 min 6ppg 5 rpg that he gave them last year off the bench. I think they grossly overpaid for him but im not a GM maybe they see him being a late bloomer like Jermain Oneal this will be his 6th year and I guess they think he will produce in a starting role once Bosh Leaves.

@ lmaking …. No I do not, I simply threw the facts out there for further discussion. It is only 5 games but nearly 70% from the field is still impressive, whereas only 6 rebounds is unimpressive (which in this thread people say rebounding is his strength).

I don’t know much about him, haven’t really seen him play very much so I’m keeping my opinion to a minimum, but I’m guessing the Raptors saw something they really liked in those 5 games and think he is a serviceable starter–you don’t sign a contract like that for a backup. I know the Raptors aren’t the smartest of teams, but maybe they think Amir, in a year or 2 will actually be worth more than his contract because he is so young.

Y’all better get used to the term "overpaying" because guys like Gooden and Amir will get them… There will be more FA’s that will be getting this term guys…LOL
