I was reading that post about Pavel Podkolzin and it made me wonder who the second best player in the ’04 draft was.  Obviously Dwight is number 1 but the case for number two could be made for a few players.

My pick would be Andre Iguodala because of his all-around game, but there are a lot of other options in this draft.

Who do you guys think is the second best?

Its hard to dispute between Devin Harris, Andre Iguodala Josh Smith, and Luol Deng.  They are all good players on good teams but I would have to go with Josh Smith since he is so beast.

As of right now, I would say Andre has been the second best up to this point in his career. But, the first guy that came to my mind was Josh Smith, who I remember Jay Bilas announcing live on TV that he believed Josh was the most likely player to be a bust in that draft. Well, he was way off on that one, Josh has been pretty darn solid.

Here is the list after Dwight, their are quite a few fighting for runner-up honors:

    1. Andre Iguodala

    2. Josh Smith

    3. Luol Deng, who has been fantastic this year and is not great at anything, but is good at a number of things and a solid wing.

    4. Al Jefferson, who I am sure will be a popular choice, but has yet to prove he has what it takes to win

    5. Kevin Martin, who has the highest scoring average of anyone from that draft (Regular season 18.5-18.2 of DH)

    6. Devin Harris, has been hampered by injuries, but appeared to be a PG on the rise and still is really quick with the ball.

    7. Ben Gordon, great scorer off the bench, but has never really gone beyond that.

    8. Emeka Okafor, could possibly be higher, but he has never lived up to his rookie of the year billing and has been an average big man.

    9. Jameer Nelson: Only other player in this class to be chosen to an All-Star game, but he has yet to separate himself into the category of big time lead guard.

    10. Trevor Ariza/JR Smith: One is a talented defender who can shoot, but seems to have a really bad shot selection. The other is a burner and better scorer, who also has very questionable shot selection to go along with a questionable attitude.

My second best player from the 2004 draft would have to be Josh Smith. 3rd, Al Jefferson, 4th is Luol Deng, 5th is Iggy, and 6th is Kevin Martin (I still don’t know how he slipped all the way to 26. That just astounds me. He should have a been a lottery pick for sure)

Its a tie between Josh Smith & Iguodala leaning more towards Smith cause he had more playoff appearances. Definitely should’ve been an All-Star at some point too so I give that to him as well. Iggy’s had an Olympic apperance and a gold medal. That shouldn’t go unrecognized.

Josh Smith would be my choice…The sick thing is He and Dwight played on the same AAU team (ATL Celtics) that went undefeated during the summer before Dwight’s Sr yr…also Randolph Morris was on this team. Probably one of the most talented AAU teams ever assembled.

Iggy is not 2nd to me in that draft. Smith is solid in all areas, and Jefferson requires a double team is why I choose them as 2 and 3 in that draft.

Josh Smith then Al Jefferson over Iggy. I would even argue Deng over Iggy.

it between Andre Iguodala, Josh Smith and Luol Deng

i’ll go with Luol Deng, i think even if Andre Iguodala and Josh Smith have more talent, Deng prove himself to be perfect third option player cause he is strong intangibles guy, great defender and team player with solid offense, and i think he accomplish more.

Sad that JR Smith isn’t top 3-5 player in his class.

Dude got so much talent, but prime example of what a bad attitude and score only mentality can get you.

But I do agree with the list just switch Josh Smith and Iggy

And I would switch Gordon and Okafor, Okafor is averaging a double double while Gordon scoring average has dropped big time since leaving chicago and was at an all time low this year at 11.7

I can agree with any of those guys mentioned.  Up to this point they are all special in their own way.  Josh Smith is one of the best players in the league NOW, forget about the draft class.  Had an all-star calibur season.  Jefferson before the injury was a double double machine and is starting to get back to that form.  Some of these guys would be rated higher if their teams were better.  Iggy and Martin are 2 players that would benefit from being on better teams.  If Iggy stays in Philly and they continue to progress, I can see him having a HOF career because he is so good all around, I can see him being an important part of some championship teams.  Actually, most of the guys on this list if they stay healthy will have great careers.  Gordon reminds me of Vinnie Johnson and I dont think being in Detroit serves him well.  Nevertheless, I have to say its a toss up between Iggy and Josh, I would love to have either of those guys on my team.
