LBJ said he might wear number 6 next year because he believes that number 23 should be retired for the whole NBA in honor of MJ. I know it’s just a number, but he got a point. MJ gave so much to the NBA, retiring his number so no one can ever wear it in the NBA is the least they can do to show some appreciation.

Well, I would be totally fine with them retiring Michael Jordan’s number, as they have done the same in hockey with Wayne Gretzky, and honestly, no one will be the 23 that Michael was, so it would be a cool gesture. Doc Rivers, who I am guessing was just being a schmuck, said they should retire the number 6, which is the number LeBron would want to change to. I am guessing he is saying this because he is the coach of the Celtics, and would hope the number would be retired in honor of Bill Russell, who is the first number 6 that comes to mind regardless due to him being the consummate winner in pro sports. I think that Bill Russell having the finals MVP named after him was a correct and great gesture, and would have no idea why they would retire his number throughout the league after all of these years. Michael just was inducted into the Hall of Fame, and honestly if LeBron had not been wearing number 23, I think his number would have been retired long ago. I do not think many people would have a problem with no more 23 and a Jordan jersey hanging in the rafters, as I think teams he had not even played on gave him some tribute. Plus, LeBron taking on the new challenge of Bill Russell’s number would be a site to see.

If you notice that the two athletes who had their numbers retired league-wide were trend setters or all-time greats (Gretzky and Robinson). Personally, I hate the idea, but the Heat already beat the league to the punch, so it couldn’t hurt. Besides, only the greatest of athletes can have such an accolade on their resumé, and Jordan is the perfect person to have his number retired league-wide

i think if they retired it it wolud be a great gesture if not then dont but i think jordan number and russell numbers are a little different fr j wore 6 annd was an iconic figure in the game but when you think of the number 23 you think of jordan in any sport anybody who wears 23 is wearing in honor of MJ he made that number relevant without him we wouldnt know the number 23, then everybody talking bout larry and magic those numbers cant be retired look at all the other greats that wore 32 and 33 it would negate all of what those players accomplished in their careers

Most people choose their numbers for some reason, a lot of the time because of another player or person that wore that number. Even Michael wore it due to his brother Larry wearing 45 and him wanting to be half as good as he was. So, starting a legacy has less to do with a number and more to do with a player. If LeBron wears 6, he is still wearing the same number as a player that won 11 championship rings, but I am sure that LeBron’s legacy will be fine regardless of what number is on his jersey.

To the person saying that other great players numbers should be retired, I just do not agree. I think Michael set himself apart, and is largely considered the greatest basketball player to have played the game. He is also definitely the most iconic, and as Gretzky was to Hockey, so was Michael to basketball. Retiring the number 23 would be a great tribute to Michael and would be something that I am sure many people would not have a problem with. It is one number of an NBA player who most likely will never be matched, and I just do not think that it would lead to the discussion of retiring the numbers of other great players, as their numbers definitely just do not mean what 23 does. Name me a player who’s number you feel should be retired by the entire league? If you were going to choose one, it would be Michael, and I just think that it is a great gesture and ultimately, a solid way to one up hockey and all those people who claim Gretzky’s greatness over Jordan. Honestly, to me, numbers are not a big deal, but if Gretzky deserved it, than Michael does all that much more.

getmoney I didn’t contradict myself. I said that honor should be put upon trend setters or all-tme greats, and I clearly said Jordan fit both terms to a tee. And to everyone saying that other greats should have their numbers retired as well, that can’t happen because it would cause a severe shortage of numbers to choose from. For a perfect example of that, look at the Celtics. They have retired pretty much every damn popular number there is, with more on the way (pierce)

Most guys that wear 23 is too honor Jordan anyway, so doesnt make much sense to me, but I understand the symbolic reasoning behind it

Ya know. I am a Jordan fan and I think there should be something for him, but not a league wide retirement. Wasnt Jakie Robinson the first black baseball player to go to the MLB?? IDK for sure so someone correct me if im wrong. IDK anything about hockey so IDK about that. But for Jordan to be mentioned in history with Robinson is just a little crazy. Yes Jordan is the greatest player to date, but he wasnt ground shattering as far as a component in history. Robinson changed sports for ever for an entire ethnicity. Jordan just demanded that the game, the same game that had been played for years, be played better. Everyone after the Jordan era had to be able to play multiple positions and pretty much had to be great with both hands. He has changed the game forever, but he hasnt changed the nation like Robinson did. When children study about he Black/White feud after slavery was abolished, Robinson’s name will be mentioned. Not quite like Martin Luther King but defiantly changed the entire nation and really helped with the war against segregation.
