Starting off with Miami vs San Antonio. Big matchup tonight is Edgecombe vs Bailey.

I really hope Edgecombe and Bailey both show out in tonights game. I expect Bailey to try to score 50 and shutup all those “experts” critisism,. These two players got trashed during the draft process.

Especially Bailey… that was downright disrespectful what they did to Bailey… and Kon going over Tre Johnson smh…. I like what the Wizards are doing by picking him and now trading for Whitmore. This team suddenly has some serious wing depth.

Oh I didnt realize they traded for Cam Whitmore. Thats a great fit but there are a bunch of wings/forwards on that team and it m aybe tough for him to get a featured role. Justin Champagnie is a player for whatever reason they just wouldnt play last year he only averaged 21 minutes per game and played 60 games but he still led the team in win shares. Whitmores been tryintg to earn rotation minutes in one of the toughest enviroments in the league in Houston so hes gonna bring a different level of competitiveness to the Wizards.

This has been a terrible game.

Pelle Larsson looks phenomenal. Might be too good for this setting. He looked frustrated or like he didnt want to be here during the halftime interveiw he did. He’s gonna have a huge year for Miami.

Kasparus only stats in this game has been 2 turnovers.

Carter Bryant in SL looks alot like Carter Bryant in college. Underwhelming and leaves you wanting more. The way he moves around the floor and when he makes shots its just so fluid you cant help but think hes got this massive cieling. But most of the time when he shoots he misses and hes just not productive at this point.

Kyra Lewis Jr. sighting (former Pelicans lottery pick). He still cant shoot. I compared Fears to him earlier in the pre draft process and said he would have similar issues if he landed on the Pelicans.

Miami looked to have fielded a pretty strong Summer League team, the Spurs seemed to use twice as many players as them.

Carter Bryant is a work in progress but he’s in the perfect setting to develop.

Bronny is injured, I had wondered whether LBJ had pulled some strings so Jnr could skip SL?

VJ seems to be taking more shots than he was allowed to take in college.

Ainge has probably got it right with Ace and Clayton Jnr.

Topic back playing for the Thunder giving them even more potential depth next season. They can watch the key guy’s minutes potentially with such a deep roster.

I wonder if Sloth Stephens turns up in Summer League now that would be perfect.

Houston’s L.J. Cryer is lighting it up for Golden State right now. He’s made 4 three’s. I really wanted Cryer to end up with the Raptors but Alijah Martin is probably the better pick because of the added athletisism. Cryer’s explosive shooting and Houston defensive pedigree should make him a great pro. Theres gonna be alot of good undrafted players from this draft.\

Anyone know why Isaiah Mobley hasnt been able to find an NBA role? He seems like a very valuable player. He has good size and length, and is a good passer for the position. Hopefully he sticks with the Warriors.

Say what you want about Ace Bailey, but he makes impossible plays that only 1% of the league can make and does it multiple times per game and hes not even 20. Offensive rebound into a step back one footed fadeaway. Who’s doing that?

Im hearing Hugo Gonzalez looks amazing right now and the Celtics feel like they have the steal of the draft. If Hugo keeps this up and Kasparus continues to struggle its going to be really tough for this major international prospects to not go the college route. If Hugo went to Illinois in place of Kasparus who knows where he would have gotten picked.

IGood view point Oh Canada, I still like the fun of finding those hidden gem overseas players or the likes of Berringer who did a great combine. In some ways nor being exposed to the college game can protect a player’s downside but as you imply it limits their upside in the draft.

A lot still depends on the level the prospects can play overseas and how many minutes they can get if they are on strong rosters. There I can see the huge benefit of going to college and getting good minutes. Zikarsky didn’t get rotation minutes but wowed at the combine if he’d gone to an NCAA team and even if he had stayed 2 or 3 years with development a guy of his size would have been drafted much higher.

Well Zikarsky is behind Joan Beringer right now on the Wolves SL roster which is not a good spot for him to be because Beringer looks like one of the steals of the draft. Sometimes its hard to tell just how quick or athletic a player is when they are playing in a foriegn league. Its hard to determine the game speed and athletisism of the other players. Well Beringer is still freakishly athletic at this level and his defensive positioning is special.

Yeah, Beringer played likely as good as the competition but more cohesive overseas before summer league and he has something to prove to everyone such as getting the minutes he deserves. Minnesota’s bench is pretty deep. Remember Leonard Miller??? He’s got some solid defense/rebounding and an overall worthy skillset to add to that frontcourt still if he ever gets a chance to play. They’re pretty loaded up front along with everywhere else. The one thing they could use is a lead guard that can command the offense better than what they got. Conley’s not young anymore and Dillingham I’m not sure is the answer.
Back to Beringer, he showed good touch and displayed his athleticism well. And even though it’s a summer league game, 7 blocks is no joke!

Raptors 1st Summer League game went about as good as possible. Its really not fair to be completely honest because they have 7 players on this team that played together all last season 6 of which were in the teams rotation at times. They have chemistry that other teams just can’t compete with. I know people say not to get too excited about Summer League but theres alot of good to take away from that game.

CMB did not play (abductor strain) but should play in game 2 on Saturday.

Alijah Martin was phenomenal. He’s got some Josh Hart to his game. Played excellent defense, was very physical, got a poster dunk, shot the ball well and had 5 assists. Was also +36. He fit in seamlessly with our other young players.

Ulrich Chomche played very well. He is physical and athletic, very annoying player to play against with his length and quickness. Also seemed solid and strong, He might actually end up being an NBA player for us.

Mogbo, Shead and Walter all looked great which is to be expected. Mogbo still did not show great touch but he did dunk everything and if you can’t finish your floaters or layups dunking is a good idea. Walter looks much stronger and decisive.

Also just a cherry on top Noa Essengue did not play well. He was not ready for Toronto’s identity of aggressive defense and had a whopping 7 turnovers. As a Raptors fan it would have been nice to see CMB go head to head against him but I’m just happy he didn’t go off tonight. He had some good moments but his mechanics are inconsistent and you can clearly see he’s not used to this level of competition/game speed. Hes absolutely massive though, true 7 footer.

Beringer looked good in his opening game but was hyped as being a mid first rounder or late lottery so is living up to that billing. Zikarsky was drafted pretty much 30 places below Berringer so would logically be behind him in any current rotation.

Berringer can have a year or so taking select minutes behind Gobert, Randle and Reid but can be bought along and mentored so when the time comes for a bigger role his is ready. With Rocco being alongside Gobert and Randle if he does get a fyll deal will be useful too. But he is a high upside low downside risk where he was drafted IMO.

How about Hansen Yang’s performance against the Warriors last night? Again, just summer league, but he has shown some flashes of brilliance on the court. He passes that rock as good as the Joker. The passing is just amazing. He must have lost 30 pounds give or take from a year ago too. Portland might be competitive if they try to be this year. Not saying they’ll have a winning record in the tough Western Conference, but maybe not pushovers either.

I know hes already had the big combione performance, got drafted 16th and looked good in his SL debut so its a bit late but how can anyone deny this guy. He’s the mopst matketable player in the class besides Cooper. He plays exactly like Jokic but with more athletisism. I was hoping since they worked him out that Toronto would into the 1st round to get him with one of the Brooklyn picks or the late OKC pick but Portland was one step ahead of everyone and picked him high. I think he’s gonna be an amazing player and great fit for Portland.

Clingan played in a big frontcourt duo at UConn with Sanogo so I’d be intrigued to see him and Yang as a duo. Yang will need time to adjust to the NBA and an 82 game season so I don’t see Portland rushing him. They moved Ayton out of the way to free up minutes and if they will look to run plays through Yang than there has to be specific line ups for this if a backcourter is the usual ball carrier.

I’d not say Yang has to be the focal point unless he really is that good but at minimum he can be a nice ball carrying option as more teams move away from one main ball handler. His passing inside the paint will be a huge advantage too if they get the right sort of shooters in the line up.

Bigger news Sloth Stephens has been sighted on the Hawks roster!

With the Summer League I’m looking more at the guys percentages and seeing how efficient they are. But i must say Terence Shannon has looked good for the T-Wolves. Him and Dillingham didn’t see many minutes in rotation last year but combined with Beringer gives the T-Wolves some nice young depth behind their key rotation players. Zikarsky is a longer term upside punt so I’d not include him in this.

So, there’s this guy who’s been dominating summer league… it is summer league, but David Jones Garcia from the GLeague on the Spurs summer league team has been destroying the competition game after game. I thought it could be a fluke, but Idk… maybe he has Jeremy Lin fever or maybe he’s legit. Either way, kudos to his play… I didn’t think he really had a chance to quite make it in the league, thought he was likely an overseas guy at best when he played for Memphis, but he’s really improved his shot and the feel for the game is already there. David Jones Garcia has a chance to make an NBA roster this year imo.

DJG has certainly been on a hot shooting streak recently and with the line of thought the Spurs need to have some really good shooters around Wemby I can see him being the sort of player the Spurs will have a very close look at. I don’t know what his all round game is like but in certain line ups around Wemby where they can maximize his shooting ability he could have a bespoke role.

So its only been two games now outside of college and the first game he was rusty but CMB is very good. He’s so calm and patient and he reads everything. You know ever since Draymond Green has been in the playoffs weve been comparing players to him, usually tweeners. I think CMB is the one. He’s not a Draymond Clone but he does alot of the same things without being such a headcase. Very excited about CMB. Toronto’s going to be really good next year.

With the Raptors I’m still wondering can they fit CMB in the starting line up with Ingram and Barnes plus two from Quickly, RJ and Poeltl?

CMB has that Paul Millsap type build and is one of those players who doesn’t have one outstanding point to his game but there is no weakness in his all round game he can contribute across the stats sheet. He is a very useful passer so can handle the ball on occasion, his 3 point range is just developing. Remember he took no 3 point shots in his first season in college and despite being undersized was still considered a first round pick then.

He returned to college and improved across the board. At the Raptors he doesn’t need to be “the man” but I agree he can be a very good 3rd even 4th man on a top team which Draymond was/is.

I admit I didn’t get the CMB hype and had him late first round but some major drafts had him in the top 10 so the Raptors clearly saw what these analysts saw.

Ulrich Chomche is way further along than anyone expected him to be at this point. He’s in the same tier talent wise as Maluach and Beringer. It will be very interesting to see how these three develop. I think Beringer is the best prospect but Chomche has a cheat code being in the Raptors organization.

All the bigs mentioned have got time on their side to develop and are in pretty good situations. The Raptors have just extended Poeltl for several more years and have these interchangeable “smaller” bigs to play around him. So Chomche can be bought along very steadily on a not too expensive deal.

Beringer and Zikarsky have Gobert to help mentor them and Zikarsky like Chomche is a low risk high upside pick.

Maluach I always felt was the best “genuine” big man prospect in this year’s draft and the fact he ended up with the team I support I’m happy with. He probably needs to start developing a bit sooner than the others though.

I really hope Queen bounces back strong. That sucks…
Beringer and Zikarsky really landed in a good spot. Great team that develops players well with a great tutor in front of them in Gobert has to be only good news for those guys in the long haul.
I hope Maluach pans out… he has that All NBA defense potential. The others have that developmental advantage though with their environments. Suns are in limbo right now, so who knows? I think it can work out though…

The T-Wolves have Gobert, Randle and Reid as their big man rotation for the next couple of years. Beringer I’d hope would start getting minutes this year but Dillingham and Shannon didn’t so he’ll have to earn them.

Zikarsky is a much longer term guy who may well spend time in the D-League for a season or two.

With Maluach I don’t know what Phoenix will do with Mark Williams. They can offer him an extension now but might wait for him to play next season to see what his durability is like and how well Maluach develops.

      For sure…
I’d like to see some of those practices in either case… Beringer vs Randle, Zikarsky vs Gobert or Maluach vs Mark Williams… could be fun to see… And I’ve always been a Hansen Yang believer… didn’t think he was going to shed that much weight from last year though. What he brings to the table is special…

So, after all this rambling on bigs, wondering who has the best frontcourt rotation in the league? Seems like there is quite a few great ones to choose from. The Joker + Aaron Gordon and Valanciunas seem pretty formidable. Not sure who I’d pick though… who’s the best frontcourt?

I advise everyone tunes into this Raptors/Kings SL game, it should be a war. Alot of people outside of Canada are not aware of whats going on in Toronto. The culture has been reset completely. Nobody gets on the court if they arent playing a certain brand of physical pressure defence and it spilled over from the main team in the 2nd half of the season where they had a top 10 defence while tanking. Players get yanked off the court for missing defensive responsibilities and its great.

Just to prepare everybody in advanced for this game ‘on paper’ Nique Clifford is probably the last person in this Summer League tournament you want to constantly be pressuring and guarding full court. Of all the prospects in this years draft class Nique is probably the one I watched the most outside of Flagg, Harper and Bailey. I’m a big fan of Mountain West basketball because the teams are very well coached and do not rely on raw talent like the major conferences. Utah St, Boise St and New Mexico contantly pressured teams in a similar fashion as the Raptors and throughout the course of this season Clifford has experienced and solved this defense many times resulting in his team Colorado St winning the MWC Championship.

Whether or not they get him to crack in this game like they have all the other teams remains to be seen but the problem with playing this style every night all game long is fatigue. See the Kings arent playing this brand every night. Raptors are. So ‘on paper’ the Kings should be fresher. It becomes a battle of attrition and thats why you see a player like Jakobe Walter or Jamaal Shead end up getting weak legs and no lift on his jumpshot.

The Kings also have Devin Carter another gritty guard and Maxime Raynuad who will be able to make smart decisions and help his guards out of trouble. This should be a very fun matcghup and challenge for both squads and for those who say SL doesnt matter I would suggest they tune into this competition.

Yang Hansen looks totally jacked now compared to what we saw last summer.

I can see what Oh Canada means about the Raptors effort on defence, they are getting an impressive number of steals I noticed.

David Garcia-Jones continues to shoot well, the Spurs can surely figure out a way to use him in certain line ups with Wemby.

Johni Broome pretty much treats SL as like the NCAA and looks like he might be a good draft by 76ers.

Sloth Stephens shot 100% from the 3 point line in his last game.
