I’m going to do a Prospect v. Comp. debate on the most common comparison that i’ve seen over the years of the highly prospects. I will give my opinion on if the comparison is fair, who would I compare them to, and where would I draft the players.

1.) Markelle Fultz vs. D’Angelo Russell – This is the most common comp. that i’ve seen over the past 6 months prior to the season. I believe Fultz is a totally different prospect than D’Angelo Russell. I believe Fultz agility, athleticism, quickness, and shiftiness is much better than D’Angelo Russell have right now. They do share similar qualities, such as height, weight, wingspan, and combo guard mindset. I believe a more accurate comp. is Derrick Rose/Brandon Roy. I believe Fultz is the number one prospect by a great margin and is the best PG prospect since Rose.

2.) Josh Jackson vs. Andrew Wiggins – This comp. started to get serious attention since Jackson was a Junior in high school. I can see the comp. in terms of athleticsim, but I don’t see it much in game. Jackson is much more agressive and is better all around than Wiggins. Wiggins had better shooting mechanics when he was at Kansas and was the superior athlete. I believe Jimmy Butler as a much better comp. than Andrew Wiggns. I believe he should go around 2-3.

3.) Lonzo Ball vs. Jason Kidd –  This is the more fair comparison that i’ve seen so far in draft comp. discussions. You can see the impact that Ball have on the game without scoring the ball, such like Jason Kidd. I would take him 3-5.

4.) Lauri Markkanen vs. Kristaps Porzingis/Dirk Nowitski – This is probably the most off base comp that I’ve seen. Not saying he won’t be as good as either of the two, but I don’t see the athleticism of Porzingis and I don’t see the skill set in Nowitski. He’s a great shooter and his ceiling seems pretty good. I see him more of Nikola Jokic and going between 5-10.

5.) Jayson Tatum vs. Paul Pierce – I might be the only player that don’t really see Tatum as a top notch prospect. Still believe he’s a lottery pick, but I don’t see the talent like others. He’s a phenomenal mid range player that can score off of one-on-ones, but can’t see him being a plus-shooter and a elite finisher in the NBA. I believe Jon Isaac and Josh Jackson are a tier ahead of him in terms of Wings. I don’t really see the Paul Pierce comp.. I see more of a Demar Derozan/Rudy Gay comp. as more suitable for him.

Having seen Derozan score a million points on pull up jumpers, stop and pops and little fadeaways – I’d take that.  You don’t average 28 ppg not being able to score.  More than one way to get buckets

Not saying that Derozan is bad, but he’s just not my type of player. Poor defender, take the most ineffecient shot in basketball (the fadeaway midrandge shot). Getting 28 points on about 22 shots and shooting under 30 percent from 3. Also not really being a plus rebound or passer make it less appealing. Also, he really struggles when the game slows down in the playoffs when players take away that shot from him and that shot isn’t falling, he’s really useless if he’s not a one-on-one scorer. I see the same thing with Tatum. I would call him a plus passer or rebounder, not the best athlete, not projected to be a good defender, and take too many tough shots. That’s not saying he’s bad. But, that’s saying that I wouldn’t want my team to pick him because that game is unappealing and I don’t believe you can win with your top 2 go to guy that plays like that.

I’ve been throwing around the Peirce comp too.  It eludes to Tatum’s skill set and how I see his game translate to the NBA.  Casey, the player you are describing sounds more like a TJ Warren. Mid-range game with minimal threes and not much of an ability to beat his man off the dribble and finish. I believe those skills will be his NBA floor. If I were pressed to give a more modern comp I would have to agree with the guys that are throwing around Jabari Parker’s name. Maybe less of a tweener as far as being able to play both wing spots instead of Parker’s SF/PF role.

Never seen the TJ Warren comp. before, but I like that one a lot. Can’t really see the Jabari Parker one though. Don’t have the measurables, one-on-one game from the 3 point line, handle, and athleticism.
