Chicago1980ParticipantI was just wondering if there is no NBA season this year then how will they initiate the draft this year. Who gets the top 14 picks how does that work if nobody is going to play. Not sure if this has been asked already.

mikeyvthedonParticipantBut, I am in a good mood today:
http://www.nbadraft.net/5-pressing-questions-2012-draft
The first question, it is a possible scenario, not necessarily what will happen. Still, I like this as a possibility. I have also heard the possibility that:
- They just re-do the lottery from last year (Though, that would mean that lower seeded play-off teams would have no chance to move up)
- They would have a league wide lottery that would not be weighted (Which would mean the Lakers, Spurs and everyones favorite, the Heat would have the same chance as the Timberwolves, Cavs and Raptors. Makes very little sense)
- They compile team records from the last 3-5 years (heard anywhere in between there) and rank them accordingly
I think that the system I came up with, which semi-mirrors the NHL system in 2005, would be the most fair way to do things. If you check the comments, I even suggested that if a team like the Heat was selected, they would only be able to move up a maximum of 5 spots in draft position (from 28 to 23). That would mean that while teams who made the play-offs would have a chance to move up in draft order, they would not be privy to landing one of the top few spots in the draft and take potential game changers like Drummond, Davis or Barnes.
So, the answer is, their has been no official decision on what would happen, as the NBA has never had a cancelled season. The ultimate hope is that we will never have to find out and the lockout is resolved. My feeling is, they will eventually resolve things and while the season will be slightly shortened, they will at least have one and the draft process will be the same as always. As much as some people dislike this current lottery system, I think it is pretty fair and kind of cool. Plus, with all of the "Suck for Luck" talk, I am hearing the NFL may indeed start thinking of having a lottery system of their own.
If you think the system does indeed suck, I can think of a worse system. I am playing a "Create-a-Legend" in NBA2k12, and I finished my first season. I checked the other teams (just through the stats, as that is apparently the only way you can) and saw that they had done the draft ALPHABETICALLY by location. So, Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte and such were lucky. Sacramento, Toronto and Washington, not so much 🙁

The Scare Crow ReturnsParticipantbecause you could bet your Life the Lakers, Celtics, Knicks, Bulls or Heat would find their way in the Top 5 somehow…just have two lottery drawings between the best 15 and worst 15 Teams…

mikeyvthedonParticipantSee, I don’t like that idea either. I think that having a weighted lottery amongst the entire league, with the bottom 16 teams only being able to move up a maximum of 5 spots is much more fair. I also think the equal weight system would be an awful idea, but I think every team, particularly the Pacers, Grizzlies, Hornets and your Philadelphia 76ers, should have a chance to move up in the draft. In the system I came up with, the 76ers could potentially draft 12 instead of 17. That may not seem like a lot, but if you look at the average success from 12th pick to 17th, it adds up.

apb540ParticipantThat’s one of the better ideas I have seen. Like you said about the Sixers, I would much rather have Terrance Jones than one of the guys near our pick now. Keeps Stern from rigging the hell out of it too. He would love to see Harrison Barnes in a Lakers uni…

mikeyvthedonParticipantBut, as much as everyone only sees the worse in a weighted lottery everyone is eligible for, it worked out pretty well in the NHL when they did it. Pittsburgh got Sidney Crosby, who was basically seen as being the LeBron James of hockey (until his incredibly unfortunate head injuries). They were one of the teams that had the highest probability of drafting him. I will say, after the top 10, the odds of the player making a HUGE impact are stacked against you. For every Kobe Bryant at 13, there are more Courtney Alexander’s. But, I think every team in the league, if their is no season, should at least have the chance to move up in the draft and that it should not just reward teams for being bad over a year ago. That would be super lame and make small market owners look like geniuses for making sure the lockout happened for the most part.
As I have said, I really hope it does not come to this. From everything that is being reported, the lockout will probably take games away, but we may still have a shortened season which would lead to an ability to have the normal draft. I just hate people thinking about these doomsday scenario’s without thinking them through. The 76ers actually were the 16th pick, so I am surprised you said "The bottom 15 and the top 15". So, the team with the worst record that made the play-offs should be able to pick first, but not the team with the second worst record that made the play-offs? Just does not make a lot of sense to have it be so arbitrary.
My system may be confusing, but I think it takes fairness into account if their were no games this season. If not, I am all for keeping the current system. I think it does enough to prevent teams from tanking, and if it doesn’t, than it is more the fault of the team than the system. Tanking for a 25% chance at having the first pick is pretty stupid, and as we have found out, rarely works out in ones favor. Tanking for a 100% chance on the other hand, well, I am sure Timberwolves fans would find it incredibly fair, but everyone else would probably be pretty pissed off. Hence, "Suck for Luck" leading many to question why the NFL has not thought about using a lottery as well.
