Kasey Wilson, Central Florida
Don’t look now, but the UCF Knights currently have the second longest (to SMU) winning streak in the AAC after winning three straight. And the man who has led the way during that three-game stretch is not one of their sharp-shooting freshmen nor their savvy point guard, but rather their burly senior forward Kasey Wilson. In a week where SMU and Memphis won with incredibly balanced scoring, Cincinnati failed to beat crosstown rival Xavier, and everyone else in the conference beat up on one another, it was hard to pinpoint one standout choice for POTW honors. But Kasey Wilson is playing with a sense of urgency appropriate for a senior in February and he did more than enough to earn it despite being a relative unknown compared to the Ryan Boatright’s of the conference.
After posting an 18-point, 11-board game to spark this mini-run last week against South Florida, Wilson opened this week with 13 and 6 on 6/11 (55%) shooting as the Knights eked out a home win over Houston. Then, Wilson scored a career-high 21 points as he displayed surprising touch from outside, shooting 5/7 from deep. He also chipped in 9 boards and 2 blocks, and the Knights got their first road win in regulation on the season in a pleasantly surprising 14-point win over Tulane. Wilson isn’t the best player for UCF this year, but the fact that he’s coming on strong now is a testament to the four years of hard work he’s put in, and is a factor that could have UCF in position to surprise some higher-seeded teams in the conference tournament.
Who’s Hot?
Will Cummings, Temple
Prior to their loss Thursday at SMU, Temple went on a 7-game winning streak to claw their way back into NCAA Tournament discussion and, in fact, have themselves on the more comfortable side of the bubble. Their best player during that stretch has generally been senior point guard Will Cummings. In a backcourt of talented scorers, the most talented scorer followed up his 21-point outing last week with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks against East Carolina, a true stat sheet-stuffing performance, followed by a 14-point, 7-assist, 3-rebound, 7-steal performance against SMU. His shooting hasn’t been great (0/13 in his last 4 games; 10/28 this week), but he’s filled the box score, gotten to the line, and scored in double figures in each of his last 8 games as Temple is close to being nationally relevant once again.
Sterling Brown, SMU
In the absence of sophomore guard Keith Frazier, ruled ineligible for the rest of the year, another sophomore guard has stepped up and strung together several solid performances. Sterling Brown, a 6’6” wing player with a good shooting stroke and very good rebounding ability for a guard, has scored 8 or more in each of his last 5 games, but more impressively, he’s done it on 56% shooting, along with an average of over 4 rebounds per game. In the absence of Frazier, Brown has averaged 8 PPG, 4.7 RPG, and 2.7 RPG with percentages of 55% from the floor and 50% from 3. Most recently, Brown scored a season-high 13 in a convincing rout of UConn. Brown seems to complement SMU’s stars (Nic Moore, Markus Kennedy, and Yanick Moreira) a little bit better than the more ball-dominant Frazier did, and his emergence makes them even more balanced as the postseason emerges.
Daniel Hamilton, Connecticut
Since being moved to the 4 spot, Daniel Hamilton, one of the leading contenders for AAC Freshman of the Year, has really blossomed. Despite UConn’s struggles this week, Hamilton had a pair of great games. He scored 13 against SMU, along with 5 boards and 4 assists, then had a career game with 25 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals in a tough loss to Memphis. Hamilton has averaged a near double-double in his past 11 games. On the year, Hamilton has 10.8 PPG and 7.2 RPG, a great number for a swingman. If he continues to develop, I could definitely see him going pro after his sophomore season, but not before leading UConn to a lot of victories.
Who’s Not
Rodney Purvis, UConn
On the other side of the coin, Rodney Purvis of UConn has struggled of late, and his performances this week have been gone hand in hand with the team’s struggles. In their pair of losses to SMU and Memphis, Purvis scored a total of 15 points on 6/23 (26%) shooting, along with identical 1/7 outside shooting numbers in each game. Purvis also only recorded 1 assist, along with 4 turnovers, in 59 minutes. It has been an up-and-down season for Purvis, but overall, he’s failed to meet expectations. His 9.9 PPG and 42% shooting numbers aren’t great, and out of 71 qualified players in the conference, Purvis’ Offensive Rating on Kenpom.com ranks a mere 63rd, in a conference that includes the likes of ECU, UCF, and the wildly inefficient USF and Houston.
Top 5 Most Thrilling Shots
After a few thrilling endings this week, I thought I’d give a recap of some of the most exciting buzzer beaters and game-winners the AAC has had to offer this year.
1)Tulane’s Jonathan Stark over Cincinnati, 50-49, February 14th
If you watched the end of this game, you’ll agree that this is the easy choice for #1 here. After Cincinnati went up 2 with four seconds left, Jonathan Stark, the sophomore guard, drove straight up the floor, took matters into his own hands, took a long, contested 3…and made swished it as the buzzer sounded to complete the road upset on Valentine’s Day.
2)UCF’s Brandon Goodwin over Houston, 79-78 OT, January 6th
This one is as high as it is because it’s a two-fer. Point guard Brandon Goodwin, as a part of his 30-point night, hit a pull-up 3 to tie the game in regulation with about two seconds left, then hit another pull-up 3 with three seconds left to win it. Neither was a buzzer beater, and the second wasn’t the best look, but Goodwin made both and UCF escaped on the road.
3)Temple’s Josh Brown over Memphis, 61-60, February 7th
After Memphis tied the score, Temple ran down the floor and, after a nice dish by Will Cummings, Josh Brown hit a clutch 10-footer off the glass to turn a deficit into a lead. This game was especially huge because it extended Temple’s crucial win streak to 5 and kept their NCAA Tournament hopes alive. Josh Brown isn’t the guy who would normally take the shot, for Temple, but he stepped up in that moment, on the road, in front of a tough crowd. And it was a bank shot! That’s gutsy.
4)UCF’s BJ Taylor, over Houston 56-54, February 15th
And for a second time, a UCF player victimized the Houston Cougars in the closing seconds as freshman B.J. Taylor drove to the basket and hit a very tough lay-up over a defender to get the win in front of the home crowd in what was probably the best moment of his college career so far. The game didn’t really have any postseason ramifications, but it was a real confidence-booster for UCF.
5)Memphis’ Austin Nichols over Tulane, 57-55, January 24th
Austin Nichols, one of the best big men in the conference, drove the ball and hit a tough baseline jumper to beat an inferior Tulane team in a semi-neutral venue in New Orleans in this one. Once again, this game wasn’t a particularly important one, although it will likely help Memphis gain an NIT berth. Memphis has had injury troubles this year, but they’re still a decent basketball team and they gutted it out in this one.
