IndianaBasketballParticipantHe was pulled over three weeks ago for driving 108 mph… That’s three off of the court incidents in less than two months. We all know about his most recent incident by now. He also had one back in October when he had a gun put up to his head at a club (is he even old enough to be at the club?).
Should the 76ers be concerned about this guy? I haven’t heard about any character concerns about him in the past, but these don’t look good being that it’s just his 1st year in the NBA.
I hope this guy isn’t another knuckle head. I know he’s young, but damn…

doubledribblerParticipantI know nothing about his character. Coach K has a pretty good track record of avoiding headcases, so I’m wondering if the money and fame has went to his head. Okafor needs to make better decisions, but that team needs some actually veterans even if they have to overpay a couple of guys. Good veterans can be mentors on and off the court. If you look at things and rumors are true, this is the 2nd high profile guy that has come in recently and had issues.
Off subject, but I wonder what it would be like to show up every single night to know that your team not only has less talent than everyone else, but that your front office is pushing for you to lose. This team isn’t trading to get you help, but might trade away someone that was helping you. If I was a top player in the upcoming draft, I would refuse to go there. 26 losses in a row in the NBA is ridiculous. You can catch a game just from someone playing down to the competition, having an off night, or just by playing harder than them.

CynthiaParticipantReally? Just yesterday you were arguing against my comment where I said all of the losing will mentally effect the players, then you turn around and say the same thing. Classic

negguaryParticipantis speeding really that big of a deal??? We live in an era where everything is blown up! I guarantee you if social media was around during the 80’s and 90’s some of our all time greats would be viewed much differently. Not excusing the fighting incident but come on. The complete narrative around this guy coming into the draft is that he’s such a great kid great upbringing now he has one major incident and you wonder if he’s a knucklehead?? Like are we blaming him for being 19 and having a gun pointed at him???

IndianaBasketballParticipantI understand where you’re coming from…
I don’t think speeding is a big deal. He was speeding *excessively* though at 108 mph. Maybe if this was his only incident, it wouldn’t be that big a deal. However, that’s three incidents in less than two months that have put him in harms way. Thousands of people die yearly in car crashes… Millions injured. He’s only 19… What’s he doing at the club? Reports are it was an argument that led to a gun being pointed at his head. His recent incident was also an argument that led to him punching a guy. And based on the police report, the argument wasn’t just about the 76ers being garbage.
Just wondering if the big guy is putting himself in harms way. Yes, he’s young… But he has to be smart and make good decisions.

Magic JordanParticipantReally? If you’ve ever lost someone to a car accident… 108 in a 40?? Yes it is a big deal.
He’s not the only person on the road. Dude should have spent a night in the slamma.

IndianaBasketballParticipantExactly… 108 in a 40 is excessive speeding. Jordan Hill had an incident like this during training camp with the Pacers and was taking to jail.

For_Never_EverParticipantI’ve still have never gone 90mph. At the very most is usually 85mph, but once I noticed I’m not paying attention to how fast I’m going slowing down right away.

ScarTissue98ParticipantOkafor can afford making $4 Million a year….. probably hits 100 MPH in 4th gear…. & it prob feels like he’s doing 50 mph…. But that doesn’t excuse Okafor…..
& I agree w/ Magic – speeding is dangerous….. & anything over 80 mph makes your ability to avoid a collision just about impossible ……..b/c it just completely cuts down your reaction time…… So many people are damaged beyond repair or flat out killed……
It’s just not worth it…..

treytalkssports.comParticipantEmbiid and Okafor’s personal immature is at least partly due to the lack of solid veteran leadership on the team. These young guys need older guys to teach them how to live life as an NBA player and compete. They do not have that.

DukeDaSquadParticipantDefinitely agree with the lack of veterans around him but thats also making excuses for him. He has to man up and make good decisions. He clearly has a bad temper also which he needs to control. I would blame it on him being from chicago with the current state of the youth there but i dont remember Jabari, D Rose, or Anthony Davis having any problems like this.
Never heard anything bad about him up until this point but hes gotta chill out. Hopefully he realizes and doesn’t get into any more trouble. Also stay away from night clubs.

doubledribblerParticipantNo one is making excuses for him. It’s a real thing. You go from making fake tuition money that you’re not actually touching to millions of guaranteed dollars in salary and endorsements. Now you’re making more than your coach. Oh and you are the franchise. That’s before we get into all the free gifts, women, booze, and new relatives show up. People want a 19 year old with no corporate experience, likely no grooming, or significant education to show up and be 100% business and mistake free. It sounds great, but not realistic. There’s no reason to not put him in the best environment you provide as a team.
You get some veterans in there to show how things are done, especially ones that still have some ability left. Who’s he leaning on? Stauskus who just came from Sacramento’s dysfunction. Embiid can teach him to be a Twitter All Star and where to find the best bloody marys. You need someone to let you know you are going to have to work and how to adjust to what you are about to experience. Veterans aren’t going to make you mistake free and it doesn’t make another grownup their responsibility, but there is a reason that some of these guys get signed year after year when there are younger players and guys with more potential available. Dysfunction tends to breed dysfunction.

negguaryParticipantThe media feeds negativity! He was just considered the nicest kid you could meet now they can’t stop finding dirt on him. Let’s be real this is less about jahlil then it is about creating the narrative about the negative consequences of rebuilding and how the sixers are doing things the wrong way!

HitsterParticipantPlayers are allowed time off and can enjoy themselves but should a player on a 0-17 really be out celebrating I wonder?
I’d guess Coach K would keep his players on a fairly tight reign but as said above Okafor is now being paid a big salary and has much more means than he did last season as a student.
Hopefully the 76ers will be able to keep Okafor on the straught and narrow as I’d hate to see him going off the rails with him having so much potential.

TarHeelRavenParticipantOkafor is the last guy I would’ve thought to be doing all of this stuff. I don’t doubt he was a choir boy at Duke where everyone worshipped the guy. It is completely different once you leave a college campus and are being paid millions and not under the close watch and scrutiny of Coach K and his staff. Okafor is coming off a national championship and was the number one ranked high school player in the country before then. How many times has the guy been heckled in his life? He’s only 19 and has a ton of growing up to do. Don’t understand why the guy is out clubbing, ESPECIALLY in Boston. He went from not losing much to being on the worst team in the NBA. He hasn’t handled it well. There is absolutely zero veteran leadership in the locker room to pull him aside and tell him to stop. Imagine if he had KG. I guarantee you his nonsense would stop immediately. I hope he cleans his act up soon or his career could be in jeopardy.

Mr. HookShotParticipantCan’t agree with you more. I believe if half of the guys between 18 and 23 would get millions on their bank accounts they would do some crazy stuff… heck, even guys who don’t have that amount of money do it. Just because they are professional athletes they are in the spotlight, and things like this get blown up. Not sayin’ he should do this kind of things, but it is what it is: he will get punished for the things he does, and we shouldn’t make anything more out of it.

Bmore_DCParticipantMan the 76ers are a mess! I cant help but think theyve helped create this losing culture/mentality. I gotta say i always thought Okafor was a little strange, but i think since he went to Duke everyone figured he was going to be ok. And im not writing him off just yet, hes so young. But i agree, Philly needs to bite the bullet and get some leadership because this might become a regular accurance if you let that locker room run wild. Brown is the coach of the year haha.

I am an idiotParticipantIf I had his kind of money and fame at 19, I wouldn’t have made it to 20 (almost didn’t anyway).
This is why these guys should be required to stay in school for at least another year (or two). It is too much, too early.
Not to mention that their immaturity makes the draft even more of a crap shoot than it should be. Guys like Bird and Duncan that came out as seniors were much more known commodities than the low first rounders today.
