What Happened to Noah Vonleh?

 I think Charlotte probably took him because he fell in their lap.  They already had other bigs on the roster in Zeller, Jefferson, and Biyombo.  He also didn’t play very well in Summer League if I remember correctly.  It’ll probably be a couple years before we see if he’s a wasted pick or not.  He just didn’t have the opportunity to get playing time this year.  Biyombo is a restricted free agent and if he isn’t re-signed Vonleh could be in the rotation next season.

I thought the same thing about Vonleh slipping past the Kings.  He seemed like the perfect fit to play next to Cousins but instead they drafted another shooting guard after picking McLemore the year before.  However it’s been out there that the Kings owner pushed the team to draft Stauskas when they wanted  to take Elfrid Payton.  So it sounds like Vonleh wouldn’t have been their guy regardless.

 Too soon to say his potential was wasted, the kid is only 19 years old and was injured part of his rookie season. Give him a couple years to grow and develop before making a decision on him, he has the talent.

 Last year’s class didn’t get a whole lot of run. That’s part of it. I never whole-heartedly bought into Vonleh. Before the draft, a lot of people on here insisted he should’ve gone 4th. Many got upset when it was suggested otherwise. He had the physical tools, incredible length, respectable intensity, and a decent jumper.  Maybe it is the school.  Calbert Cheaney, Kirk Haston, Jared Jeffries, DJ White, they never played as well as people expected, or for where they were drafted.  More recently, C Zeller and E Gordon, they haven’t been big stars.

Zeller has improved from his first to second season, but as pick 4 he still has a long way to go to be worthy of that spot in his draft.  E Gordon, a 7th overall pick and close to being the only thing New Orleans have from trading Chris Paul.  Some injuries, but also 40% shooting three seasons ago, and only 13.4 points and 41% this season.

Unless Al Jefferson leaves as a free agent, there will only be minutes for one of Vonleh or Zeller to play well for the Hornets.  Both have potential.

He only played 25 odd games last year due to injuries and the players ahead of him but he did show some nice flashes in the last few games and having the chance to work with Pat Ewing in particular will really help his game.

I would not worry too much about his NBA future at this time.

Prior to the draft most thought his first year would be a redshirt because he wasn’t ready to compete physically at the next level. Like others have mentioned, a hernia sidelined him for the early part of the season. I was his biggest fan and still think he will be a more than solid pro. Still just 19.

 You can’t write any player off after one year particularly one thats still a teenager and played sparingly on a team with a lack of cohesion in that frontcourt. Granted if I was making that pick I would have snatched up Lavine but I think MJ just feels the need to take guys from big programs because it feels safe. Also Charlotte had most likely hoped all along they would get Lance and wanted to get a guy that could space the floor a bit at the 4 position which makes sense considering they had hopes for the playoffs. I think if that frontcourt clears up and Vonleh gets time on the court he’ll be solid. I like him more so than Randle.
