 A fully guaranteed $60 million for Gortat too lol. No team options or partially guaranteed years.

 WHY 5 years?!?!! They signed Gortat for the same span of time as a Kyrie Irving who is a decade younger. Good job Grunfield. You got to take up a 6th of your salary cap while enjoying the risks of being stuck with a big man in his mid 30s.

 the results of resigning an unrestricted free agent bigger market teams want. i think there would have been a legit chance of washington loosing Marcin if this dragged out to either Miami or Dallas honestly. its not really a great deal for the wizzards, but its not like they can rely on Nene’s help to stabilize the post. Seraphin and Booker are good, but clearly not who they see as eventual replacements in the starting line-up.

aren’t the worst – it’s about in the ballpark of Tiago Splitter, which seems like the going rate for an above average big.  I’m assuming we’re going to see some really silly money thrown around this FA period since the league is widely expecting accelerated cap increases leading into the 2017 CBA renewal.  I may be wrong, but they could stretch the last couple years of the contract to lighten the blow a little on an annual basis.  I just hope they don’t give Ariza a bloated five year deal too.

I realize they were scared of losing him and didn’t want to lose momentum. At the same time this is how you get into cap crunches and start making deals you don’t want to make down the road to compensate. You just have to fight the urge to overpay for size. It’s an old concept and one that blows up in team’s faces over and over. The Spurs overcame overpaying for Splitter because other guys are underpaid. Look around the league at underachieving centers who make 10 million plus and how it hamstrung the franchise. There is a reason centers aren’t a required roster position anymore. The talent isn’t there to justify the contracts.

Also, it’s tough to blame those eastern conference team for going all in. I mean, how far were the Wizards from beating Indiana in the second round? The East is so awful that pretty much every team with a chance to make the playoffs has a legit feel they have a shot to the conference finals. And small market teams can’t really pass on a possible conference finals run to look for who-knows-what long term project. Washington isn’t technically a small market, but the Wizards have been so awful for a long time that they’re not really an appealing destination for anyone. I know this contract will probably look terrible by 2016-17 and the Wiz have already used the amnesty clause on Blatche, but again, what should they do? Save the cap space for the hell of it? They could’ve made a run for Greg Monroe (who played for Georgetown), the only starting caliber center free agent, but Monroe is a liability on defense, something that doesn’t fit well in a team with only so-so backcourt defense; his development has been stagnant; but first and foremost, he’s a RFA and usually to get a RFA from another team you have to overpay them. And there were suitors for Gortat (Miami).

One thing to look at is that Gortat doesn’t have the wear and tear of your typical 30 year old.  I really like him as a player and feel the wizards had to resign him.  I think some fans undervalue what he did for the Wizards last year.

 Valid point by Celtics1982 above, Gortat hasn’t had as much mileage as a lot of 30 year olds in the NBA. I don’t have an issue with $12 million a year over 3 or even 4 years but 5 is stretching it. I suppose he has trade value in year 5 if you look at it that way. Personally I think that with a 5 year deal then I’d have trimmed the value a bit.
