CameronCrazy11ParticipantNow I know ESPN is going to have a field day with this trade but my first reaction was this. Even after gaining KG, Pierce, and Terry (assuming the trade goes through), I still don’t see the Nets being better than 4th in the East this season. They’re not better than the Heat, Bulls, and Pacers in my eyes. Plus they have a line-up of guys who are not necessarily known for their defense whereas the three other teams make their name for defense. Bottom line, I think the Nets can win their division and probably win about 50-55 games this season but I don’t see them making it any further than the second round in the East.
Any thoughts on this topic?

esperanzafleet69Participantidk, i think this makes them a much better deeper team.
williams
johnson
pierce
KG
lopezterry
brooks
teletovic
reggie evans/plumleethey still need to be better defensively, and they should look to add in free agency, but i dont see any reason why this team couldnt be in the conference finals.

slash787ParticipantI would take the Nets roster over the Pacers
Deron Williams > George Hill
Joe Johnson > Lance Stephenson
Paul Pierce David West
Brook Lopez = Roy Hibbert
Jason Terry Tyler Hansbrough
Reggie Evans > Ian MahinmiI think the Nets have more depth than the Pacers and they will be a nightmare matchup for the Heat.
If the Heat struggled against the Pacers down low how are they going to fair against Brook Lopez, Kevin Garnett, Andray Blatche, and Reggie Evans?
I am not a Nets fan by any means but I think they have as good a chance to win the title this year as any other team.

220ParticipantFYI, Andray Blatche is a free agent and Reggie Evans was part of the trade with Boston.

sixersman111ParticipantYour nuts if you think the nets are better then the pacers. terry was awful last year and will only be worse. Lance will be better then johnson next year. West and garnett are about even. Roys better then lopez who i think is very overrated on this site.

44ears81I don’t think you can compare the nets and pacers on a player by player basis. The nets are old and slow and the pacers are young, physcial, and play good D. I put the nets at 4 in the East and may get 2 wins against Miami in the second round (if they advance).

kobyzParticipantI think regular season they will end as 5 seed but still could make the eastern finals as they have now what it takes to win playoff series as opposed to last season

CameronCrazy11ParticipantI’m pretty sure Blatche is a free agent so there’s no guarantee that he’ll be back just to let you know. Plus I’m expecting Orlando Johnson to get more minutes for the Pacers this season. The Pacers are bound to pick up a back-up point guard for George Hill too.

aarondsonixfanParticipantActually, yeah he was. The deal sends Kris Humphries, Reggie Evans, Gerald Wallace, Tornike Shengelia, Keith Bogans, Kris Joseph and 3 first round picks to Boston for KG, The Truth, and Jet Terry

B-ball fanParticipantThis deal helps make the Nets a contender, but they will be relying on some very old players. If Garnett gets hurt, the team will be in a lot of trouble if they aim to beat any of the top three teams in the east. I predict that the Nets will end up as the 4th seed, just edging out the Knicks, but I still think that they don’t look like a favorite to beat the Heat, Pacers, or Bulls.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipant1) Lawrence Frank was essentially the defensive coordinator with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce in 2011. He is going to be on Jason Kidd’s staff, so there is already a familiarity with what is going to be done defensively. Joe Johnson played for Mike Woodson. These are guys who know what proper NBA defense is, and there is no reason to believe they won’t be as good defensively as Boston was this past season which was certainly good enough to compete for a title.
2) The Nets are not done assembling their roster. Just as Ray Allen, Udonis Haslem, Shane Battier, and Mike Miller took less to go to Miami, there will guys take less to sign with the Nets. Elton Brand, Mo Williams, Devin Harris, Mike Dunleavy, Kenyon Martin, and Stephen Jackson can still play, but can they get paid? Roger Mason, Anthony Morrow, and Boobie Gibson can shoot. Ronnie Brewer and Devin Ebanks can defend. Zaza Pachulia, Jason Collins, Joel Przybilla, and Jermaine O’Neal are big. The options are not going to be slim.
3) They are big up front. Brook Lopez had his way up front against the Bulls, and he didn’t have Kevin Garnett to help him with spacing or defensively. Indiana gives Miami fits because Roy Hibbert and David West can put up star numbers against smaller defenders. Memphis rolled OKC because Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol brutalized the Thunder big men. Brooklyn can be that kind of team if Garnett stays healthy. I think Garnett’s health will be dependent upon them adding more depth up front so that he isn’t playing more than 30 minutes per game, but I have no doubt as of now that the Nets will be able to do so.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantI think people are underrated the Nets right now. Of course, on paper they seem very good and we still need to see them play but there’s no doubt in my mind that if Deron Williams plays the way he used to and KG can stay healthy, they are in the same category as the Heat, Pacers, and Bulls.
Only time will tell though.

sixersman111ParticipantBulls, pacers, heat and the knicks are all better then the nets. Nets just got older which unless they have a time machine isn’t going to make them better. Joe looked bad last year and he is only a year older. Deron hasn’t been the player he was with the nets. Lopez can’t rebound for a seven footer. Pierce stats have down the past 3 three years and will probably go down again this year. Same thing with Garnett. I just don’t see it. Nets just keep digging a bigger hole. Billy King should really be fired. I really don’t know he even got a job after what he did to the sixers.

LipstickParticipantObviously Miami will be the favorite by default when the season begins, but will they be able to win two consecutive playoff series versus teams like Nets, Pacers, or Bulls who have serious height and/or play rugged and wear teams down physically?
If the Nets can catch Miami in the Eastern Conference Finals after another brutal series with Indiana during the Eastern Semis, for example, I could see the Nets having their way in the paint to the point they could upset a banged up Miami.
Also agreed with BothTeamsPlayedHard. Players will take less to play for a team like Brooklyn who can contend, though they need a defensive stopper on the perimeter badly and a third big that can play inside.
It’ll be interesting to see how Pierce plays with so many scoring options available now. This will also be the first time Garnett has had an all-star caliber partner in the frontcourt since Tom Gugliotta’s days with the Timberwolves. Googs!
With all that said though, a scenario where a team with a first-year coach with no experience as an assistant leads a team to the NBA Finals is a very unlikely one. Getting to the second round seems like the most likely outcome. Conference Finals wouldn’t be that surprising, but they’ll need some luck with health and maybe Deron Williams reverting back to pre-2011 form.
