Malik-UniversalParticipantI recently made a scale of player’s overall skills
now lone and behold or w.e. that saying says, i made a scale of ath. and i will give a few examples in each category
it goes:
below average/bad/terrible: Big Z, Scalabrine, Oberto (retired), Collin twins, etc.
Average: Steve Blake, Derick Fisher, Keith Bogans, Greg Monroe, etc.
Good: Ben Wallace, Tayshaun Prince, Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom, etc.
Very Good: Jamal Crawford, Aaron Brooks, Chris Wilcox, Jeff Green, etc.
Great/Elite: Sonny Weems, DeRozen, LeBron, Wade, Anthony Randolph, Wall, etc.

goneParticipantA good athlete doesn’t necessarily mean good jumping skills, it also includes body control and footwork to some degree so on that basis Kobe is elite

PureshooterParticipantWe should try to name the best players of all time for each level of athleticism:
Terrible: Yao
Average: Bird
Good: Magic
Very Good: Kobe
Elite: Jordan
Just throwing some out there.

Malik-UniversalParticipant@ oh canada i was actually bout to make a great and elite two seperate but i define great and elite atheltes that can each impact a game on athleitsm alone…
For example, a guy like deandre jordan doesnt have skill, but his athletism allows him to impact games whether its dunking, running the floor like a foward, blocking shots, etc.

OhCanada-ParticipantSorry but it hurts my eyes to see Derozan and Lebron put in the same category athletically, its not even close man.
Secomd when Weems, and Derozan try to impact games on their athletisism alone thats when they play reclessly and create turnovers. When they control their tempo and play within the confinees of the system they flourish. The hugest misconseption on their game is their athletisism.

JNixonParticipantThanks you OhCanada for saying that Derozan is not an elite. I’ve never seen him as a freak athlete in any way, but people made him out to be the next Vince Carter when he was in HS. He’s smooth and agile with nice body control, and he’s a solid leaper, but he’s only decent in terms of quickness and speed. He has no elite athletic trait IMO. Just some very good traits and some merely decent traits.

FastAndFuriousParticipantAthleticism is not just leaping ability….you have to factor in:
Strength
Body Control
Speed
Quickness
Agility
Leaping Ability
with that being said people need to re-evaluate their list.

JoeWolf1A lot of athleticism as judged by NBA scouts and GM’s is perception. Just look at Tyler Hansbrough, he was always getting knocked for being an average or even sub par athlete, yet he tested extremely high on agility, strength speed and leaping ability. I think like a lot of you guys said athleticism is a combination of a lot of things.
To me an elite athlete is Michael Jordan, Lebron James, or Dwight Howard, Shawn Kemp, and I would even put Blake Griffin in this category and I think Russell Westbrook is very close to here. Guys that are physical freaks that don’t come along all that often.
I think at an NBA level you are a very good athlete if your vert is 35-40 inches, your fast and somewhat strong (Derrick Rose, DeRozen, Terrance Williams) OR if you have a high 30’s or 40+ inch vertical and are weak, slow, and kinda goofy ( cough cough Ryan Hollins, Anthony Randolph, Julian Wright) and are pretty much only playing basketball because you can jump and run well.
I think you can be considered a good NBA athlete if you have a 30-35 inch vertical or you make up for lower leaping ability with blazing speed ( Steve Nash) great strength ( Carlos Boozer, Kendrick Perkins)
I think if you are a pro basketball player and have a sub 30 inch vert and don’t have elite strength or speed you are a sub par NBA athlete. That doesn’t mean you can’t play, there are tons of guys like this who have great skill sets, fundamentals or decades worth of veteran tricks. You just might see them dunk in a game once every two years or so.
