The trade winds were blowing at the 2008 draft as 20 of
the 60 players selected were traded with Darrell Arthur moving twice. Combine
that with the number of "upside picks" rising and falling and you
had one of the wildest drafts in years. The following is a report card based
on how teams used their picks to improve. Grades and comments by Aran Smith.

Atlanta’s first rounder went to Phoenix in the Joe Johnson trade. Considering
how well Johnson has worked out for them, and this team actually made
the playoffs, Hawks fans can live without having a pick. The Hawks are
finally out of the basement and have a team to be proud of, having extended
the champion Celtics a lot further than Kobe and company. But with success
comes adversity, as the team must now decide who to build around, and
who to let go of. The Hawks had no picks and made no moves during the
draft so they draw an incomplete.

(30) JR Giddens
(46) Bill Walker (Trade)
(60) Semih Erden

From
worst to first, credit Danny Ainge for steadily building assets. His one
big mistake: giving away the pick that could have netted Brandon Roy or
Rudy Gay for Sebastian Telfair will have to be chalked up as a mulligan.
Ainge has proven himself as one of the sharpest talent evaluators in the
game. His decision to hold onto Paul Pierce as well as trade for Ray Allen
was a leap of faith that achieved flight when ex-teammate Kevin McHale
finally decided to unshackle KG, gift-wrapping him to his former team
for a Big Al Jefferson and change. The rest is history. With DeAndre Jordan,
Mario Chalmers and CDR available here, you have to wonder if Ainge might
have fixated on Giddens instead of taking one of the sliders. Giddens
head looks about three sizes too small for his body, but he’s an NBA athlete,
and might be asked to assume James Posey’s role sooner than later, as
Posey could test the free-agent market. Bill Walker is too athletic for
his knees, having blown a gasket four times now. Erden makes a clean sweep
of three draftees that scouts had question marks regarding mental make
up. If Ainge can get just one of these three to check their heads and
play to their physical abilities, he’ll have done well. With an atmosphere
of winning and so many seasoned vets, Giddens and Walker find themselves
in a great situation to succeed. A year ago I said Ainge should be fired;
what a difference a year makes.

GMs
like to put their stamps on teams (sometimes at the expense of the franchise,
i.e. Steve Kerr) and MJ with the help of Larry Brown is doing just that.
Drafting DJ Augustin likely signals the imminent departure of Bernie Bickerstaff
pick Raymond Felton. Ajinca was a favorite of International scout and
Nike rep Rich Shoebrooks who actually predicted Ajinca would go ahead
of the higher rated Batum in May. Ajinca is a project with nice upside
but is a long ways from being ready to contribute. Weaver is a very nice
pick in the early second round who should be able to fill in at both guard
positions bringing excellent defense.

(1) Derrick Rose

After
much deliberation, the Bulls wisely decided on the local point guard who
should instantly become one of the better floor generals in the league.
Rose gives them a franchise talent to build around. The team will look
to move Kirk Hinrich for frontcourt help. Michael Beasley offered a tempting
option for them, but with Rose being from the Windy City, Paxson’s support
from the fans would have instantly dropped 50 percentage points. For a
number of reasons, Rose is the safer pick, and though Beasley will probably
start more impressively out of the gates, Rose is likely to improve more
over the next five years, not to mention he makes those around him better.

The
Cavs appear to be floundering, struggling to add talent around LeBron
in the draft, free agency and trades. Hickson is an undersized four-man
(6’8) with good length and solid muscle but lacks the upside of other
freshman prospects. If he’s not able to bring the team much in the short
term, there’ a good chance he will struggle to improve much over time.
The Cavs also brough in the Kansas duo Kaun and Jackson in trades. Neither is expected to keep Lebron in Cleveland. LeBron and NYC, tick-tock…

The
Mavs panicked after the Lakers pulled off the Gasol deal making a terrible
decision to acquire Jason Kidd. At the time, it was obvious this team
was not a legitimate contender even with Kidd and the team went overboard,
giving away far too much to obtain the aging playmaker. If Kidd was
2-3 years younger, the deal would make sense, but giving away a young,
talented point guard like Devin Harris plus Diop and 2 first rounders
was a huge mistake. Some feel that a championship team cannot be built
around a European player. Dirk’s Mavs came incredibly close, but unless
Dallas can reload its roster after Kidd’s contract expires in 2009,
that ship might be on the verge of sailing.

Joe Dumars is one of the top GMs in the business, but giving away DJ White
for Sharpe (at 32) was a bit of a head scratcher. Sharpe never evolved
into a dominant player at UAB, but showed flashes of nice potential. He
is a very athletic forward, but will need to put on significant weight.
However, with the way Detroit has developed Amir Johnson, don’t put it
past them to work similar magic with Sharpe. He’s raw, and a long ways
from being NBA ready, but certainly has the potential to develop into
something. Trent Plaisted and Deron Washington are nice athletes at their
respective positions, but despite being seniors may not be ready for the
NBA grind and could find themselves in Europe or D-League next season.

While Randolph is this draft’s tech stock IPO, credit the Warriors for
gambling on him. Any higher and he was a risky pick, but considering where
they got him, this is an excellent value (even if he’s eerily similar
to Brandan Wright). Apparently the Warriors are ready to re-enact "Hands
Across America," and with their past three first round picks, they’ve
already got Oakland covered. Hendrix could be a solid pick for the Warriors
if he can keep up with their athletes. The Warriors are still having flashbacks
of the way Carlos Boozer abused them in the second round of the playoffs
two years ago. Maybe the team sees Hendrix as a possible match up for
Boozer. Good luck Mr. Hendrix!

Trading

Gay when they traded the #8 pick away. The quick-fix trades have a success rate of
about .04 percent. Adding Dorsey should help bolster their run defense,
freeing up Mario Williams on the pass rush. Seriously, has this guy ever
thought of strapping on some football pads? Maybe he could play in the
NFL without them. Leunen is a crafty forward with solid skills but might
be too slow and position-less to find a spot in the league.

TJ Ford (Trade)

Larry
Legend did not start off his GM tenure in Indiana very well. Unloading
Jermaine O’Neal and his 2-year $40-million deal was necessary, but he
didn’t get enough in return as TJ Ford, like O’Neal, is injury prone and
could be more trouble than he’s worth. He also has yet to prove that he
can be an elite-level point guard. Their draft philosophy makes sense
for a team that’s close to contending, adding Rush and Hibbert a couple
of NBA ready players with not a lot of upside. Unfortunately the Pacers
are in rebuilding mode and don’t have the talent in place to make "solid"
picks. Rush’s career took a big turn for the worse when he was informed
that he was being traded to Indiana instead of playing for Portland. The expectations
and role that the Pacers have in mind for him will make it difficult for
him to succeed. He is a defensive standout with solid shooting ability,
but asking him to be more than that is asking for trouble. Taking Hibbert
at 17 was also a mistake as he’s limited athletically, and will be nothing more than a solid center. While these picks might look solid in a year, they likely won’t appear so solid in 4-5 years when other players they could have taken (like Bayless and McGee) potentially become standouts.

Gordon hit a stroke of bad luck somewhere along the line (wrist injury,

Clipper-land. Considering that DeAndre Jordan and Michael Beasley were
spotted at Downtown Disney (the bar area of Kissimmee, Fla.) at midnight

it’s no surprise that Jordan fell to 35. Aside from being the answer

is Serbian-born Zarko Durisic, so it only made sense that they would take
Europe’s most dominant bigman, the Serbian Nikola Pekovic, with the first
pick of the second round. Pekovic is locked into a deal that will likely
keep him from signing with the T-Wolves for three years, but Pekovic should

Players the Hornets could have added at the 27th pick: Darrell Arthur,
Donte Greene, DeAndre Jordan, Mario Chalmers, and Chris Douglas-Roberts
— a player who happens to be exactly what they’re missing. Now if they
had known that those players would all be available, would they still
have sold the pick to Portland? The Blazers were hot to trot and would
have bought this pick at the 11th hour, so why sell the pick two days
before the draft? Selling picks is no way to run an NBA franchise, and
the team’s fanbase should be outraged. Wouldn’t Darrell Arthur or CDR
at $800k per year help this team? With the top point guard in the game
in Chris Paul and one of the most exciting young teams in the league,
this was inexcusable. This is no way to show Paul how much they appreciate
him, and cracks the door open for him to bolt in free agency. Hopefully
they insisted on Euros for the pick.

a proven professional in Europe and shows a high basketball IQ. This pick
could end up terribly wrong as the pressure on Gallinari will be greater
in the Big Apple than any team in the league. If he gets off to a slow
start, it would be difficult for him to win over the team’s fan base.
Jerryd Bayless is the player that made the most sense for the Knicks,

  1. are these draft grades??
are these draft grades?? then why are you grading the mavs with their jason kidd trade instead of grading their draft..must be a mavs hater..people these days..

    • Well considering the
Well considering the mavericks gave up their first rounder in that Kidd deal their draft grade factors in that trade. The same way Toronto’s includes the Jermaine O’Neal trade. If their grade was based solely on the Foster selection, it would be higher…

  2. I don’t see anything wrong
I don’t see anything wrong with the Pacers draft. They took a solid big man, who should have a solid NBA career and they got a good wing man plus they added TJ Ford while dumping O’Neil’s big contract. They’re lacking alot of pieces but I think they are headed in the right direction, rebuilding..

  3. pacers?
I don’t see anything wrong with the Pacers draft. They took a solid big man, who should have a solid NBA career and they got a good wing man plus they added TJ Ford while dumping O’Neil’s big contract. They’re lacking alot of pieces but I think they are headed in the right direction, rebuilding..

  4. Hawks and Pacers
I think instead of simply giving the Hawks an incomplete they should of got an F for the same reasons giving the Hornets an F. They came off their most successful season in recent years and instead of just trying to build on it, they did nothing in the draft. They’re even in a much riskier situation than the Hornets with guys Childress and more importantly Smith as restricted free agents. They already had a short rotation; losing even one of these guys would set them back a few seasons as they’ll likely not land any big names in free agency so they’ll have fewer players to work with.
Like a comment before, I do believe the D grade for the Pacers is quite a bit harsh. It’s 50/50 on the health of Ford over O’Neil, but at least Nesterovic’s expiring contract ends after the season. To a degree, trading Bayless for Rush was a smart move because Bayless would have felt he should be starting, thus would of started dramatics in his rookie year. Getting Jack in the deal (which wasn’t mentioned up top) is pretty good getting a guy who is more than capable of being a starting point guard, yet would be understanding if he isn’t. It seems that the team was mostly criticized for not being a team of great potential. But basically the team is set up with a bunch of solid players that you know what you’ll get from them. It’s just a matter of finding the one to lead the franchise, whom they could find in next year’s draft if they have a predictable bad season and get lucky in the lottery. Even if they don’t the team is still built very solidly compared to other teams in rebuilding mode.

  5. The Hawks grade is good like it is
Do the Hawks really need to add more young players? If they are successful in their attempts to sign the Joshes, they will have one of the youngest teams in the NBA. Outside of Bibby (30 years old), the rotation has enough young players: Joe Johnson (27), Marvin Williams (22), Josh Smith (22), Al Horford (22), Josh Childress (25), Zaza Pachulia (24), and Acie Law (23). Despite the youthfulness of this team, they still made the playoffs. The next step is to add some proven veterans with playoff experience to help with the depth on the bench, not more rookies.

BTW, I’d say the reasons why the Hawks had no picks was pretty good: The 1st rounder was lost in the Joe Johnson trade, but it was worth it (Joe Johnson for Boris Diaw and Robin Lopez), and the 2nd rounder was given to the Kings in the Mike Bibby trade (Bibby for Shelden Williams, Ty Lue, Anthony Johnson, Lorenzen Wright, and Sean Singletary). If they don’t deserve an I, then maybe it should be an A.

  6. Blazer Mania
I must say it feels pretty good to get an A+ grade, I agree completely. I can’t believe Kevin Pritchard managed to dupe Seattle into drafting Westbrook too high then letting the chips fall and Bayless land in our laps. I can’t wait for the season to begin. I’m not going to call a dynasty but when you have potential rookie’s of the year Greg Oden and Jerryd Bayless accompanied by Euro stand-out Rudy Fernandez, things are good. Not to mention All-Star Brandon Roy and young stud LaMarcus Aldridge already in their 3rd year. Go Blazers!

  7. Heat
The Heat i think did excellent in this draft. One thing though, didnt the heat trade darnell jackson to cleveland cavaliers for a 2009 second round pick. Thats what i saw on other websites. And the Pacers are not a D, I think a B, and Heat are going to win the championship either this year or next year. GO HEAT!!!

  8. Shan Foster is no Kapono
..not even close. His shooting form, release and 3pt range is very suspect. I don’t even think Shan Foster will make the mavs or any NBA roster. His game and brief sucess at Vandy was weaker than Derrick Byers. If he couldn’t land a spot, i don’t see Foster’s chances being any better.

  9. D for pacers is generous
Pacers need to rebuild badly and that trade with the warriors a few seasons ago was a horrible trade and now without Jermaine Oneal shipped to the Raptors it looked like the franchise realized it is rebuilding time. Ok so when rebuilding you draft for potential not players that have limited upside. Brandon Rush is overrated and at his best I see as a poor mans Cuttino Mobley. Rush will never be a star so all the pacers really did was waste a year that could have been used to harvest a potential future star in Bayless, even if they took Randolph at 11 it would have been a worthwhile project. Pacers are on pace to win 20 games next season. If they kept Bayless they could have traded Tinsley to the handful of teams in search of a point gaurd and gotten something more in return. I give pacers a F.

    • Pacers deserve the D, or if not, C-/+
The Pacers lack a legitimate centre, and as i recall on draft night, they adressed that area, in Roy Hibbert. Though he lacks tremendous upside, i believe his skill level is enough to suggest he is the Pacers starting 5 (ahead of serviceable centres Jeff Foster, David Harrison, and Rasho Nesterovic)

  10. grizzlies A+
its rebuilding time for the grizzlies… they have a young team. I think first obtaining Kevin Love was dumb because Kevin Love has extremely limited potential. I think going after 2 lottery players(Mayo, Arthur) that know how to play the game, that can make an immediate impact, with also tons of potential, was extremely wise for the grizzlies. A+

  11. Houston Rockets
The Houston Rockets has an awesome draft this year; getting Joey Dorsey gives us a big defensive guy who can help us this season or in the future. Of course he will have to compete with Chuck Hayes, Luis Scola, and Carl Landry. Also adding Donte Greene was good for us too. He is an athletic swingman which is just what we were looking for in the draft. I am sure he will get some playing time rather it be garbage time, injury, or just earning a spot. Just watch 08-09 season will be The Rockets Season. Yao and T-Mac stay healthy along with Scola, Battier, and Rafer we are one of the top two teams in the Western Conference with the Lakers. We had a good draft; we at least deserve a B+ or an A-.

  12. Another great draft day for
Another great draft day for the Blazers.
Rodriguez, Bayless, Fernandez, Outlaw, Roy, Aldridge, Oden…It seems a very strong group for years to come.

  13. Chalmers
Mario Chalmers is not good and I am glad he fell to a second round pick. I saw George Hill play in high school and in college and he is a flat out scorer. If San Antonio picked him up to be a back up to Parker, that was a mistake. He’s a two guard. Chalmers is a bum who will always be remembered for that shot. He had a good team and he played his role well. But he does not deserve to be a first round pick. You think I’m crazy, look at history (Cleeves, O’Bannon, Scotty Thurman, Shawn Respert). All undersized for their position with limited athleticism and got drafted too high (except for Thurman). Chalmers is not good and will be in the D League for the next 3 years.

    • why is he not good?
mario is one of the most if not THE most clutch players in the league. He could easily become the next Mr. Big Shot (Chauncey Billups) with hard work and strength improvement. Also i don’t see why everyone questions his athleticism when he can jam the ball at 6’1 it sounds pretty stupid to me. Dont forget about his work ethic and his electrifying defense. Also thats exaclty what jarryd bayless is, an undersized 2 guard who can’t defend.

      • A) Learn to spell player’s
        A) Learn to spell player’s names right before you dog them out. Jerryd*
        B) Because Mario Chalmers is a 6’1, Division 1 college basketball player and can dunk, that means he has NBA level athleticism? I’m 6’0 250 and I can grab the rim with both hands, should I fly to Vegas for the summer league? We are not comparing these players to you. We are comparing them to their competitors in the NBA who they have to face every night. And he is on the bottom of the athleticism totem pole compared to the rest of the NBA. Your statements are ridiciulous. Comparing Mario Chalmers to Chauncey Billups. Stop it. BIllups was an animal in college and it took him 5 seasons to find himself in the NBA. Chalmers hits one shot and you are already labelling him an NBA all star. He does not have NBA game. I GUARANTEE that he plays more games this season in the D-League than in the NBA. If he doesn’t, I will close my account on http://www.nbadraft.net.
        C) Bayless can’t defend??? Let me guess. You are one of those idiots who do not seriously watch college b-ball until late Feb. early March. Bayless is at least 2nd team all Rookie this year and the reason that Arizona had a respectable team this year. Don’t give me that Budinger mess because he was inconsistent and choked consistently.

        • chalmers
yeah but what you don’t realize is i have been watching chalmers play ever since he first started playing at kansas his freshmen year. he has always been the go-to guy in clutch time and he actually made the same shot against texas in the big 12 tourney to send the game into overtime (don’t believe me look it up on youtube). Throughout his career at Kansas he has been averaging about 12 points a game which isn’t a whole lot but there hasn’t really been a year where kansas isn’t a dominate team since he’s been there. last year he had brandon rush, julian wright, darrell arthur around him and this year he had pretty much the same minus julian wright. My point is if you were to stick him on a squad such as kansas state im sure he could average 20 points or close to it. He is an extremely hard worker and a tenacious defender (yes a better defender than bayless). I also believe he is an underrated passer and with hard work he can be a good point guard in the nba. no, no not an all-star but a good point guard. I also think all of the combo guards in this draft, (russel westbrooke, eric gordon, jarryd bayless) just gave the league about 3 more ben gordon’s but thats my opinion.

      • Agreed
Mario Chalmers, though lacks a refined point guard game, has a skill level very much similar to Rajon Rondo (who had an instrumental role in Celtics championship). Because he was a 2nd round pick, i dont think he should be seen to contribute straight away, but he has a tremendous chance to be a very solid point for the Heat in years to come, very much like Rondo of the Celtics. Besides, he has a better jumpshot than Rondo.

  14. THANK YOU FOR THE ACCURATE GRADE OF THE PACERS!
Being an Indianapolis native, I have officially given up on this team we call the Pacers. Larry Bird is an idiot and this draft showed it.

We had a guy who was a top 5 pick all the way up until a week before the draft fall into our laps at a position in which we need help. Yeah, I understand he liked the TJ Ford trade (which I thought was stupid) but Bayless is a flat out animal. He was not supposed to be a Pacer and we did not take advantage of the opportunity to have a franchise point guard. We then trade him to a team with the most upside in the NBA for an inconsistent scorer who has already had knee problems (Rush) and a 7’2 “oaf” who could not even average 8 boards a game in college (Hibbert).

7’2 in college is like being 7’5 in the NBA. There is no reason not the average double digit rebounds. Especially with the team he had. HIbbert is terrible. I do not even consider him being a bust because my expectations of him are already so low. Anyone who thinks he will even be an average NBA player has no knowledge about the game of basketball.

Bird has singlehandedly gave away all of the Pacers players for absolute peanuts. Our starting lineup is going to be Ford, Mike Dunleavy, Danny Granger, Rasho Nesterovic/Troy Murphy (pick one, it doesn’t matter) and if Foster does not sign back, (gulp) Roy HIbbert. Better team my a**.

  15. Clippers should be rewarded with an A+ for their draft
Clippers should be rewarded with an A+ for their draft. Not only did they select a legitimate star of the near future in Eric Gordon (who i believe should pencil in as their starting 2 guard immediately), they also got themselves a “Dwight Howard type” player in Deandre Jordan, who will serve as an incredible backup centre behind Chris Kaman. Kudos to the Clippers.

  16. Draft
Westbrook has the worst offensive game for a top-5 guard that I can remember. The Nets did good in getting some rotation players and one may become a starter. Arthur could be a sleeper at the PF position which is a position Memphis needs. I agree that Hibbert is a stiff wh seems Collins’ tiwns-esque. Not many All-Stars in the draft overall. Lucky to get 4. Gordon will be the most offensively inefficent guard in years(Jamal Crawford anyone). Donte Greene was a quality pick low for the Rockets and the Spurs should have jumped that one first since their teams is so old. Charloote picks Augustin who wont be as good as Felton and a prospect big man when they need post scoring. Nice job MJ..AGAIN.

  17. Pacers get an F
They traded a franchise point guard (Bayless) that has a mean streak to get Brandon Rush??? Trading for Rush makes no sense when they already have Granger and Dunleavy, somebody please tell me what Larry Bird is thinking. Do not get me wrong, I like Rush, he is an excellent defender and decent range but he has trouble creating his own shot. Bayless would have been a starter and floor general for years to come, time to usher J Tinsley out of town.

They compounded the draft errors later on by taking Hibbert. He is a stiff that cannot run the floor, I know he has soft skills (passing, mid range jumper) but I hardly think he can play longer than 20 min a night. I would have preferred them to take Darrell Arthur or the big man project kid (DeAndre Jordan), atleast those two guys have a big upside and can run the floor.

  18. Charlotte sucks
MJ and Larry Brown, two know-it all types that know how to screw up and misjudge talent. How do you pass on Brook Lopez when you are dying for a center? Omeka is a natural PF and Lopez was ready to fall into their lap and they dropped the easy pick again. I like DJ Augustine as a player but he got “owned” by D Rose in the NCAA tournament, bigger point guards give him trouble. Plus, Raymond Felton is already your starting PG that you picked a few years ago in the lottery.

Ajinca is a reach at the 20th pick, he is tall and talented but he average only 5pts a game in a weak weak France League. He will not probably suit up for them for another couple years. They could have made a move to get Darrell Arthur at this pick, a proven winner, another puzzling decision by Brown/MJ. There is no telling how good Sean May will be when he returns so a good insurance pick would have been nice here.

  19. Cavs choked
I like JJ Hickson but I would not have taken him at the 19th pick, D Greene would have been nice to pair up with LeBron. I know Greene seems like a project that takes bad shots but I am almost certain he would fall in line behind King James. Plus, having two athletes like James and Greene on the break like that would be exciting. In addition, Greene can make you pay with three pointers if you decide to double King James.
