Player of the Week

Archie Goodwin – Kentucky

Goodwin has been Kentuky's MVP through the first few weeks of the season. His skill set is more suited for a wing but with the absence of Ryan Harrow he has had to slide over and play the point. Goodwin has transitioned smoothly into his new role and now getting compared to another Calipari wing turned point guard in Tyreke Evans. In his last two games Goodwin has averaged 25 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists while leading the Wildcats to two lopsided victories. He was one assist and one rebound away from a triple-double in his last game against LIU-Brooklyn. Harrow is expected back in the next week but as the saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Who's Hot

Shavon Coleman – LSU

Coleman is quietly making a name for himself at LSU. He is a JUCO transfer that is paying big dividends for Johnny Jones' squad. The team is 4-0 heading into their big game this week against Seton Hall and Coleman is a big reason for that. The junior is the team's leading scorer and rebounder to this point and has really been a force for this Tigers squad. At 6'6" he is a rebounding machine hauling in 8 boards per game. He has an array of moves both inside and out. He can take smaller defenders down on the post and use his strength to get where he wants to go but he can also step out and hit the three ball. If Johnny O'Bryant misses any significant time, the team will rely on Coleman that much more.

Who's Cold

Marcus Thornton – Georgia

Thornton was one of Head Coach Mark Fox's first big time recruits. The forward de-committed from Clemson and signed with the Bulldogs. His first two season have been mired in inconsistencies and injuries. This season was supposed to be different as he was going to get significant playing time and battle for a starting spot. Thus far, Thornton has been very unimpressive. He has averaged 3 points per game through the first six while shooting 30% from the field and 50% from the line. His line bright spot was a ten rebound effort against UCLA. If this Georgia team wants to take the next step then Thornton will have to become more of a factor on the glass and offensively to take some of the scoring load off of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

Top 5 Early Season Performances

Archie Goodwin 11/21 vs. Morehead State & 11/23 vs. LIU Brooklyn

Goodwin, the player of the week, had turned in two spectacular performances this week. He notched 28 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks against Morehead State and then two nights later topped that performances with a near triple-double against LIU Brooklyn with 22 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists and 2 steals. He and Alex Poythress have been on fire lately and are carrying this Kentucky team through the early part of their schedule.

Scottie Wilbekin 11/23 vs. Central Florida

Wilbekin has only played in three games after serving his early season suspension. The first two were so-so performances but the junior responded with 17 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 steals while shooting 50% from the field against Central Florida. He was penciled in as the starter for Billy Donovan's squad before the suspension but he will likely be asked to lead the second unit since the team's starters are playing so well together.

Nerlens Noel 11/23 vs. LIU Brooklyn

Everyone knew that Noel could block shots. He has averaged 3.8 blocks through the first 5 games but what has been a pleasant surprise to most is how well is offensive game looks thus far. As did most of Kentucky's team, Noel had a career night against LIU Brooklyn with a career high 18 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 blocks.

Murphy Holloway 11/23 vs. Lipscomb

Holloway has improved his scoring and rebound each of his first three years on campus. He has continued that trend early on in his senior season and has become this team's go-to player. The Rebels are 5-0 to start the season and Holloway is shooting a whopping 72% from the field. He went off for 23 points and 8 boards on 9 of 13 shooting against Lipscomb. They have a bit game against Rutgers this week where Holloway will have the chance to go against Kadeem Jack and Wally Judge.

Phil Pressey 11/22 vs. Stanford

The Tigers came up short in the Battle for Atlantis as Louisville ran all over them. Still, the team won 2 of 3 at the tournament and Pressey had one of the best games of his career in one of those wins. He scored 18 points, pulled down 8 boards, dished out 5 assists and came up with 4 steals against the Cardinals in one of the more complete performances for a point guard this season. He is a special player and as he goes, so does Mizzou.
