NBA Comparison: Lance Stephenson

Strengths: Quick first step … Able to beat guys off the dribble … Attacks the rim with confidence … Can finish through contact … Capable of running a fast break … Knows when to dish it off … Not afraid of physicality … Pretty alert on defense … Sticks with his man and does a good job forcing turnovers (1.3 steals per game) … Runs the floor well in transition … Solid scorer in college (13.1 points on 35.9% from 3-point range and 72.4% from the foul line) … Should be able to score in the NBA, especially in transition … At 6’4”, 220 pounds, and a 8’3" standing reach he has good size for an NBA wing … Thick legs and stocky build give him a solid base and good balance … Should be able to handle the NBA from a physicality standpoint … Moves well without the ball … Rarely stands still and is always eager to make a play … Has a pretty high IQ to go along with a high motor … Wants to make the right play for his team …

Weaknesses: His shot is a tad flat … While his shooting numbers were solid in college, he could still fine tune his shot … His ball handling is solid, but not where it needs to be if he wants to be a primary ball handler in the NBA … He would really boost his value if he learned how to facilitate better (2.5 assists) … He tries to facilitate, but winds up committing too many turnovers instead (2.6 turnovers per game) … Needs to take better care of the ball … Tends to get overly eager and force something that isn’t there … Needs to not get trapped in the post with the ball … A bit inconsistent … Scored 24 points at Oregon and 20 points vs. USC while scoring 5 points vs. Stanford, 6 points vs. USC in the Pac-12 Tournament, and 8 points vs. Buffalo in the NCAA Tournament … The fact that he disappeared in some big games is cause for concern … He’ll need to convince teams that he can bring it in the clutch and produce at a reliable and consistent rate … Seemed to lose some of the explosiveness that he displayed in high school … Could stand to improve upon his 8.90% body fat percentage …

Overall: Rawle Alkins has all the tools to play in the NBA and is polished enough on offense to warrant getting drafted. His motor and willingness to play team basketball makes him an attractive player. If he can become more consistent and make the most of his physical gifts, he should be able to stick in the NBA.

Notes: Measured: 6′ 2.75” barefoot,  6′ 4.25” in shoes, 217.4 lbs, 6′ 8.75” wingspan, 8′ 3” standing reach, 8.90% body fat, 8.50 inch hand length at the 2018 NBA Draft Combine …

Ben Parker 6/20/18

Strengths: Alkins is a natural scorer who did not always have the opportunity to showcase his offensive ability this past season at Arizona due to an abundance of offensive talent on the roster … He has great strength in a filled out frame, which allows him to out muscle defenders and create space for his shot … Has a very nice looking shot, with consistent form … His strength allows him to maintain great body control in the air and finish acrobatically at the rim … He is a good ball handler and uses his size well to get into the lane … Alkins is also proficient at creating offense for himself and is a capable shot maker from all over the floor … He particularly excels at scoring off the move and off the dribble … He plays an up-tempo attacking style and constantly puts pressure on the defense … Alkins has good burst and a quick first step … He is not a great shooter, but he has an improving three point shot that could continue to get better in the future … He also uses a nice step back jumper and overall good scoring touch … He almost looks like a man among boys against players his age with a combination of power and athleticism … Alkins is also a solid rebounder for his position, a category in which he averages just fewer than five per game in his freshman season at Arizona … His combination of strength and athleticism allows him to carve out space and out-compete other guards for loose balls … Although he did not assume the role of a primary playmaker this past season, he is a decent playmaker with potential to improve in this area as well … Alkins’ defensive potential is also enticing, as he has quick feet that allow him to guard multiple positions … He has the strength and size to contain bigger guards, while maintaining the foot speed to stay in front of smaller, quicker guards …

Weaknesses: As physically imposing as Alkins is, many of his skills have some catching up to do … He tends to force the issue at times on offense and could improve his shot selection … While he has potential as a playmaker for his ability to put pressure on the defense, he doesn’t do a good job of moving the ball and getting teammates involved at this stage … He is also not a consistent above the rim player and doesn’t have great length … Alkins also does not always put in the effort on defense or get back in transition, and he has a bad tendency to reach for steals and commit fouls instead of sliding his feet and staying in front of his man … He doesn’t yet understand how to best utilize his physical tools, especially on the defensive end of the floor … His occasional disinterest defensively tends to impact his reactions and lateral quickness, and he can give up easy straight line drives … Offensively, he tends to be a little upright and will need to learn to play lower to the ground to be as effective getting to the rim in a half-court game … While his shot is improving (37% 3s), he could still become a bit more consistent from the perimeter to open up his driving game … He is also at times out of control on offense, leading to turnovers, and he does not have a great feel for the game (averaged almost as many turnovers as assists this past season) … Alkins is undersized at 6’4 to play the shooting guard position and tends to rely too much on his raw strength … He also played more of a subordinate role at Arizona this season with players like Allonzo Trier and Lauri Markkanen being the go-to offensive players … Will he be able to assume a larger offensive role?

Notes: Unanimous five-star recruit by variety of recruiting services … Member of the 2016 ESPN Top 100… Led Christ the King High School to a trio of New York state championships … Alkins averaged over 25 points and 7 rebounds per game in his final prep season with Word of God Christian Academy in North Carolina… MVP of the 2016 Capital Classic All-American game in Washington, D.C…Named to Pac-12 All-Freshman Team

William Peter Desautelle III 5/3/17

Strengths: 6’4 scoring guard with great explosiveness … Good athlete with tremendous natural body strength … Impressive combination of power and finesse … Very gifted scorer. High level instincts and feel for the game … Scores well off the dribble or catch … Creates offense in the half court set … Can create a scoring opportunity from scratch … Good ball handling ability … Doesn’t waste dribbles when making a move … Shoots well, has range out to the NBA three … Physical NYC "power" guard … Likes to use his strength and bully opponents … Gets to the rim and finishes well with contact … Draws a lot of fouls … Very good in transition … Good defender; good strength, lateral speed, and length … Plays under control. Strong willed. Doesn’t panic or get rattled … Plays with great confidence. A true competitor … Solid court vision and passing ability … Strong rebounder for a guard …

Weaknesses: Needs to improve his midrange shooting. Has room to become a more consistent free throw shooter … Won’t be able to finish through defenders the same way at the next levels, will need to expand finishing moves and technique … Doesn’t move well enough without the ball … Isn’t too involved with the offense until the ball is in his hands … Most of his scoring comes from creating himself with the defense set; will improve as a scorer coming off of curls, backdoor cuts, etc. … Has room to improve his body. He still carries some baby fat, has room to tighten up … Fluidity isn’t always great. Movement and footwork appear choppy …

Outlook: Alkins had an impressive high school career … Spending the majority at Christ the King to finish up at Word of God Christian Academy, where he had many big performances including scoring 51 points in a win over Victory Prep … In the summer leading up to his senior year, Alkins led NY Rens to the adidas Title …
