NBA Comparison: Ime Udoka

Borko Popic - 5/22/2008

Strengths: Very active player with nice athleticism and freakish length Does all the little things necessary to win Has been a member of three straight Final Four teams at UCLA Moves well without the ball, making cuts and reading openings in the defense to get easy points around the basket Every now and then has a monster game that shows glimpses of tremendous potential His length poses big problems on the defensive end where he plays the passing lanes well and is also more than capable of swatting shots from the weakside Decent footspeed and willingness to defend allows him to match up at a number of positions He has a good feel for where the ball will bounce off the rim giving him an added advantage when chasing down rebounds Despite being 21, he still has untapped potential given the right opportunity to develop ...

Weaknesses: The flashes of potential are few and far between (how much of that has to do with his frustrations in the UCLA system is a big question) Was plugged into being a role player and did not show any significant improvements during his time in college (in fact his scoring, rebounding, fg%, steals and blocks have all gone down between freshman and junior years) ... At times in his junior year he almost appeared like a colt who had had his spirit broken, lacking the exuberance and passion that he showed as a freshman Most of his points come from breakdowns in the defense and off of pure hustle plays his offensive skill set is almost nonexistent and he heavily depends on his teammates to create opportunities for him (although he shows a lot more offensive confidence in scrimmages and in international events) On the perimeter he lacks dribble penetration moves and inside his post game is limited to an inconsistent fallaway jumper He struggles shooting the ball, where open shots frequently result in bad misses Part of the problem is his stance, since his feet are so close together, his balance is completely thrown off His body is not built for physical play as he struggles finishing plays after even minor contact has occurred Although he is still very young in basketball terms, his ineffectiveness on offense will hurt his chances when it comes to the NBA, his game is probably better suited (at least initially) for overseas

Aran Smith - 3/9/2006

Strengths: Has the tools to become a big time player ... Extremely athletic and versatile wing ... Solid competitor ... Crashes the glass hard ... Has a 7-2 wingspan. Long arms help on defense and with rebounding ... Great attitude, plays very hard, listens and wants to improve ... Shot mechanics and fundamentals are good ... Solid free throw shooter at 75% ... Excellent on defense with great foot speed and the potential to become a lock down defender ... Has a great understanding for a player so new to the game ... In just his 5th year of organized basketball, so his upside is very intriguing ...

Weaknesses: Still getting his bearings after starting basketball late. Getting a feel for what he can do ... Must gain confidence and consistency ... Shows great flashes, but due to age and familiarity is not completely comfortable yet ... Must hone his offensive game, develop range ... His jumpshot still needs a lot of work ... Ball handling while it has improved can get a lot better ... Must cut down some on turnovers, but makes good decisions ...

Notes: Full name is Luc Richard Mbah a Moute ... A Prince in his native Cameroon ... Named Pac-Ten Freshman of the year ... Led the Bruins team in rebounding by a wide margin as a freshman.
