NCAA Power 16 Rankings

Mon, 12/02/2013 - 2:10pm

There are all sorts of swell matchups this week, largely due to the ACC-Big Ten hookups.

Tuesday’s action includes Indiana at Syracuse (No. 6), Michigan at Duke (9) and Notre Dame at Iowa.

Wednesday it will be North Carolina at top-ranked Michigan State, Wisconsin (14) at Virginia and Maryland at Ohio State (4).

Another one to watch Monday: Florida (12) at Connecticut (7).

Comment
1. Michigan St. (1)
7-0
Keith Appling is oh-so-quietly having a tremendous senior season with Big Ten POY honors definitely a possibility.
2. Kentucky (4)
7-1
The final five pre-SEC games should be tough as heck.
3. Kansas (2)
6-1
I couldn’t care less about the “struggles” in the Bahamas. This is the team best equipped to win the national title.
4. Ohio State (5)
6-0
The balance and efficiency of this team, at both ends of the floor, is still overlooked by many.
5. Arizona (7)
7-0
This team has given us a pretty nice example of how half-court defense should be played.
6. Syracuse (8)
7-0
Tyler Ennis is playing better than any freshman point guard in the country right now.
7. Connecticut (9)
7-0
The team’s top rebounders are guards Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright – not a good sign, in reality.
8. Wichita State (10)
8-0
A question to ponder – Is this as good a team as there is right now?
9. Duke (3)
6-2
There isn’t a more effective shooter in college right now than Rodney Hood (.622 FG/.591 3PT/.818 FT).
10. Louisville (12)
6-1
Saturday game with Louisiana-Lafayette will draw a lot of NBA scouts’ attention.
11. Oklahoma State (6)
7-1
There was never any offensive rhythm Sunday night vs. Memphis. The defensive was sluggish and ineffectual as well.
12. Florida (13)
6-1
Monday night game vs. Connecticut is going to feature a terrific battle of backcourts.
13. Iowa State (16)
5-0
Dec. 13 home game vs. Iowa is going to be worth watching, even if you don’t have a rooting interest in either program.
14. Wisconsin (16)
8-0
Badgers have shown knack for winning tight games. There should be another of those types of affairs Wednesday night.
15. Villanova (NR)
7-0

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls . . . Here is the “surprise team” of the season so far.

16. Memphis (NR)
5-1
The win Sunday night in Orlando may have been the most significant of Josh Pastner’s young head coaching career.

THE NEXT 16 (alphabetically): THE NEXT 16 (alphabetically): Baylor 5-1, BYU 6-2, Charlotte 6-1, Cincinnati 6-0, Colorado 7-1, Gonzaga 7-1, Harvard 7-1, Illinois 7-0, Iowa 7-1, Michigan 5-2, North Carolina 4-2, Oregon 7-0, Pittsburgh 7-0, San Diego State 5-1, UCLA7-0 and Virginia 7-1.

TEAMS OF THE WEEK

*Arizona: Rallied from 20 down to beat Drexel and then knocked off Duke two nights later in NYC.

*Memphis: Every bit of a 180 turn-around Sunday night from shellacking it took in Stillwater.

*San Diego State: Yes, the Aztecs are definitely in the hunt for the MWC title, thank you very much.

*Syracuse: Went it about its business in no-nonsense fashion in Hawaii.

*Wichita State: That was a very nice win Sunday against a likely NCAA tourney squad in Saint Louis on its home floor.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

*Ron Baker (Wichita): The 6-3 sophomore averaged 22 points in wins over DePaul, BYU and Saint Louis.

*CJ Fair (Syracuse): The 6-8 senior forward dropped 24 points on Baylor in the Maui Invitational finale and took the long flight home in possession of MVP hardware.

*Shaq Goodwin (Memphis): The 6-8 sophomore center averaged 14.0 points and 6.7 rebounds to help the Tigers capture the Old Spice Classic in Orlando.

*Nick Johnson (Arizona): The 6-2 junior guard got the MVP nod after helping his team to the NIT Tip-Off in Madison Square Garden.

*Xavier Thames (San Diego State): The 6-3 senior point guard looked like a potential MWC POY while earning MVP honors during Aztecs’ Wooden Legacy title run in Orange County.
