Memphis MadnessParticipantThere is one difference between the NBA lockout and the NFL lockout.
Europe.
Europe is paying pretty good money so I can see a lot of NBA players threatening to play in Europe for a year. A million or two a year (or more), fewer games, and better fans is something that the NBA players can fall back on that NFL players can’t.China is offering big money to NBA “stars” so I think some guys could go there.
So there are options for NBA players. Lots of international leagues that pay well and have good media exposure.
That might be the players’ best bargaining chip.

ghrghrParticipantMaybe not. I haven’t read much about the NFL lockout, but I heard somewhere that the owners are being forced to solve it, because the NFL is the only place in the world where the football players can earn money. With no league the players have no chance to earn income and that is against the law, so the season has to happen at any cost. The NBA players aren’t able to use this argument, ’cause basketball is a global game.
It would be pretty cool if the players return to their countries to play next season and the american players go play in Europe.(Not hoping a lockout will happen, just that if it does…)

You are right Europe is the difference between the two lockouts and the fact that Basketball is a World game with fans on every continent

GottaBeTheShoesParticipantNBA players under contract are not allowed to leave for europe. They are still technically under contract and Fiba and the NBA made this rule a while ago to prevent players from leaving during the lockout.

NashyMingParticipantEurope’s economy is in trouble. A lot of European teams are losing money like crazy. If the owners run into financial trouble, they may have to pull their money out.
There was news just yesterday on Greek powerhouse, Olympiaco. It is in serious financial trouble and the owner is looking to leave. Olympiaco once gave Josh Childress a big contract and spent a lot of money to build a winning team. Now it looks like they may have to break the team just to stay alive.
Most European team cannot even pay its players on time.
Bismack Biyombo dispute with his ACB team is mainly caused by financial issue. The ACB team was in financial trouble and had not paid salary to Biyombo for quite some time. That’s why Biyombo’s agent tried to void the contract and that’s why Biyombo claimed himself to be a free agent. However, the ACB team is still trying to claim his right so that they can be compenated for the 1.4 million buyout.
I don’t really think European teams are legit competition against the NBA. Even if the NBA starts a hard cap of 45 mil, it would still be significantly higher pay than most European teams.

NashyMingParticipantRegarding teams in China, Russia, whatever.
I think Chinese teams cannot pay too much money. Basketball is gaining popularity in China, but still not the focus.
Also, they have strict rules regarding the number of foreign players on each team playing a limited number of minutes, etc.
If you have heard of scary story in Russia hockey teams, I think you can almost apply the same thing for teams in China.
There’s a Canadian hockey goalie playing in Russia. He was paid pretty well relatively to his teammates. He sucked for a few games and the owner wanted him to leave the team without paying the rest of the money on his contract.
So what did the owner do? Well, after the game, there were a few cops who took the player to the police office and had him signed a piece of paper to pledge guilty on some crimes that he didn’t do. If he didn’t sign it, he wouldn’t be able to leave. So after that paper is signed, the owner has a "legal" reason to cut him loose as he had a criminal charge. The guy immediately took the next flight out of Russia.
That’s how it works there!

Chilbert arenasParticipantForeign basketball is an issue that might add to the NBA lockout but is far from a deciding factor and is not a significant difference that makes the NBA lockout so doomed opposed to the NFL. The NFLPA is working to get more health insurance since the lifespan of an NFL player after they retire is around 60 years old. The NFL is arguing how to divide up billions of dollars while the NBA is hemorrhaging money. 22 teams lost money last year so they need players to take less guaranteed money and top end players need to take pay cuts in general. The lock out is coming into effect tomorrow and I doubt we see a large number of players run over to Europe or China. I know a good amount of people that play over there and it’s not as desirable as some make it out to be. Also players will make much more money in endorsements in the states and are much more marketable.

LawDeeZeeParticipantThey know this, i’m pretty sure David Stern is on record saying that players would be free to seek employment elsewhere in the event of a lockout – the NFL has the arena league, but that really isn’t a viable option for most of the guys in the NFL

NYK2010ParticipantThats not the difference and guess you haven’t heard about the Canadian Football League.
The NFL is too smart to lose a year to a lockout.

tke744ParticipantWell one of the biggest differences imo, mistake me if im wrong. Dont most football teams make money? I have heard reports of david stren saying 22 teams are loosing money. I have no idea how many NFL teams made money, but since i havent herard that argument in favor of the owners, i am assuming most NFL teams make money. Which makes asking for changes even harder for the owners. Since 22 NBA teams are loosing money, the owners actually have a legit reason to want to change the system. While NFL owners are just coming off as greedy, and look how much of a mess that has been. Since NBA owners can say most of the league is loosing money it will give them more leverage then NFL owners IMO. I think we are in for a crazy fight.

RicoParticipantNobody is going to go to Europe and risk injury. If they get injured over there they will risk losing millions more than whatever chump change they could get from actually playing there.
