Borko Popic – 5/8/2008

Strengths: A very active player with terrific athleticism Versatile, with nice ability to operate inside and outside Has good length and a deceivingly quick first step Most effective from the mid-post where he can use his height against smaller defenders, and his quickness to get by opposing big men Although his elbow flails out on his release, his stroke is very smooth, and he can consistently knock down college threes He is very confident in his outside shot, and is definitely not afraid to let it fly He has good footwork in the post, and shows a soft touch around the hoop He works fairly hard to establish good post position A very good threat as a pick & pop player because he makes good reads and finds seems where he can receive the ball Is very comfortable using both hands to attack and to finish around the hoop His rebounding numbers are only decent, but he shows glimpses of being a great rebounder because of his length and ability to get off the floor quickly on 2nd and 3rd jumps His long arms and decent foot speed allow him to defend a number of positions and also be a disruptor in the passing lanes

Weaknesses: Has some off court concerns: as a sophomore he missed 14 games because of academic issues, as a junior he was suspended for 11 games, and then again for 5 more as a senior for violating team rules His college coach openly questioned his reliability He is two years older than his class which somewhat curtails his potential Is a tweener, lacking height and strength to play in the post full time, but also lacks necessary ball handling ability to be a reliable threat on the perimeter He is a finesse type player who completely shies away from contact, a mere 3 trips to the line per game speak of his inability and unwillingness to mix it up Other than a right mini-hook, he doesnt boast much else in his low post repertoire Even though he works hard and is fundamentally sound as a defender, his size and frame deficiencies hurt him when guarding opposing post players because he gets pushed around too easily …

Notes: Put together a nice performance at this year’s Portsmouth Predraft camp, where he continued to impress with his terrific athleticism and showed more aggressiveness than what we had seen during his time in college
