NBA Comparison: Alize Johnson

Strengths: Glue guy with winning track record having assisted in Baylor’s ascent among the elite programs in the country … A long and athletic wing, Mayer is capable of stretching the defense from beyond the arc … Nearly 40% three-point shooter during his junior season, and 38% as a sophomore, so there is some promise as an outside shooter … Solid finisher around the basket … Great ball handler for a taller player, uses his athleticism and craftiness to get past his defender … Good rebounder, grabbing five rebounds per game … Averaged 9.8 points per game despite playing just 22 minutes per game … Unique abilities when he gets hot, few players with his size are so mobile and agile … His defense is his most consistent strength … Mayer has the size, strength, wingspan and lateral movement to guard almost every position … Competitor … The Texan has plenty of grit and desire to his defensive play, with his high motor helping him average 1.2 steals over the past two seasons despite limited minutes … Was an important role player for a National Title winning team … Could serve well as a role player at the next level as he’s shown a willingness to do whatever it takes to help his team win …

Weaknesses: Struggled to break out into a star in his college career … A good deal of his value is tied to his shooting from deep, which declined rapidly this season, falling to 32% ..Can be erratic handling the ball, and rarely creates for teammates, with just one assist per game this season … Is an inefficient mid-range shooter, and he rarely draws fouls when he attacks into the paint … Potential is there, but it is concerning he played sparingly throughout his first three years at Baylor … Lacks self-creation, with many of his shot attempts coming from a pass … Has the size to be a much more prolific rebounder… Streaky shooter … Lack of polish around the basket, doesn’t have many moves if not already past his defender … Not a great free throw shooter (66% overall, 70% as a senior) … If he can’t rediscover his three-point shooting from his junior season, he lacks much offensive purpose … Turns 23 in September …

Notes: Native of Austin, TX … Key member of 2020-21 Baylor National Championship team …
