Matt Maurer – The Draft Review – 4/16/2008
Weaknesses: Though just a sophomore, Brumbaugh will turn 23 this year … Has had a number of off court troubles including losing his scholarship to Oklahoma State before his freshman season … A good athlete, but not an explosive player capable of dominating opponents with his athleticism Hasnt improved tremendously on his upper body strength since high school This can hinder him when absorbing contact on drives to the basket Defensively, he has shown great improvement when defending on the perimeter, but remains a work in progress Some of this has to do with his lateral movement, but fortunately it’s something he can correct Brumbaugh doesnt possess the wingspan typically accompanied by someone of his size Often settles for shooting three point shots from the perimeter, instead of putting pressure on defenders by going to the rim This could be due to his mid-range game which has shown progress since high school, but is still an afterthought … Doesnt always let the game come to him and has a tendency to rush himself, but to his credit this could be partially attributed to him being the primary scoring option on his team Shot selection can be questionable at times Off court issues from his past have been well chronicled, but Brumbaugh has kept his nose clean this year Tends to reach too much on defense for steals instead of moving his feet Needs to improve on moving without the ball – he’s accustomed to dominating the ball offensively Will be viewed as a high risk high reward pick
Notes: Has declared for the 2008 NBA draft … Will have a lot to overcome if he chooses not to attend a Div 1 college before going pro …
