NBA Comparison: Kenny Thomas

Matthew Maurer – 2/27/2007

Strengths: Has developed into a decent (college) three point shooter when his feet are set For his size, he does a great job of rebounding the ball Has a strong body capable of absorbing contact in the lane and finishing Approaches the game with good intensity and focus Versatile player able to post-up defenders or take them out on the perimeter Style of play in attacking the basket allows him to pick up a great deal of fouls. Sumpters excellent free throw shooting enables him to take full advantage Solid finisher around the basket does a good job using his body control to convert difficult shots Defensively he gets many of his stops off shear hustle and desire Shows good anticipation skills to roam the passing lanes for steals Has improved greatly shooting from the mid-range where he has worked hard to become a consistent jump shooter Although not the dominating athlete he was two years ago, Sumpter still holds above average athleticism Coachable player who is blessed with a good work ethic

Weaknesses: While he has improved greatly, he remains somewhat of a tweener too short for the power forward position and too limited defending small forwards Ball handling ability has improved but is still not at the point that he can create offense off the dribble Can be a little foul prone when guarding quick forwards due to over-aggressiveness Perimeter shooting remains streaky at best although he has shown the ability to get hot Some teams will logically be worried about the durability of his knees. He has already suffered two ACL injuries which raises red flags about whether he’s an injury prone player Can go through periods when he defers to his teammates and doesnt demand the ball Despite his comeback Sumpters athleticism has taken a bit of a hit and he now goes through defenders not over them Doesnt have good court vision to see the floor like most NBA small forwards Potentially he doesn’t have far to grow

Bobby Palumbi – 4/5/2006

Strengths: Versatile player who has played the 3 and 4 at the college level … Wiry strong player with long arms that allow him to be a pest defending the entry pass into the paint … Uses his size (or lack thereof) very well, strong post-up moves … Crashes the boards strong … Gives great effort … Good midrange game, and he has some three point range as well … Solid free throw shooter, he has improved each year Overall, a difficult match-up.

Weaknesses: Curtis is a question mark due to not playing in 1 game in 05-06 season, that in conjunction with his injury, no one knows if his performance or confidence will be affected in the 06-07 season … Durability is now a concern after two knee surgeries … He lacks a real position at the next level, he isnt big enough to play the 4 and he isnt quick enough anymore to guard 3s … Not exactly the best defender, although he plays with good intensity … Shoots a set-shot with a slow release that may not project well in the NBA due to his size His confidence and once aggressive style will be tested after this latest knee surgery …

Notes: Sumpter is coming off yet another knee surgery, and he chose to rehab longer this time, and was granted a medical red-shirt to be a fifth year senior. If Lowry comes back, Sumpter should be poised to have a great season playing alongside up and comer Dante Cunningham, granted he stays healthy.
