Derek Jeter will be retiring after this season.  Not one of the greatest players of all-time like Mays, Aaron, Ruth, Mantle or Bonds, but one of the greatest leaders of all-time in any sport.  The captain won 5 titles with the Yankees and has over 13 all-star appearances and 3,300 hits.  Jeter was never the best hitter, fastest, strongest, best arm, just one of the greatest WINNERS of all time.   My question to you guys is who would be the NBA equivalent to Derek Jeter?  I think I have a good one.  Derek Fisher.  Derek was far from a great player.  In his prime with the Lakers during their 3 titles, he was a good defender, a clutch shooter and a great leader.  Of course Kobe and Shaq were the best players, but I don’t know if the Lakers 3-peat without Derek Fisher.  He hit so many clutch shots and had so many hustle and winning plays it was ridiculous.  He didn’t have the all-star appearances, stats and won’t be a hall of famer like Jeter, but he did have 5 titles and was a great leader.  Clutch player and great winner just like Jeter.  Anyone else?

As you said Jeter was a 13 time all-star who could do some of everything and provided leadership and an identity to those Yankee teams.

Fisher is one heck of a pro, but he never sniffed the all-star game and is as likely to be inducted into Cooperstown as he is Springfield.

Jeter has five rings, and is an all-time great, but not really at THE TOP of the list of all-time greats.

A better comparison would be Scottie Pippen.  A HOFer, a multi-year all-star and a member of the famous Dream Team.  He was a key guy on one of the most iconic dynasties in sports history.  A top 30 or 40 player ALL TIME, but not a guy on the Mount Rushmore of Basketball.

Pippen played for years and was versatile with incredible defense, great ball handling and passing, to go along with his slashing, dunking, and hard nosed, smart play.

Jordan wouldn’t have six rings without Pippen.

Pippen was also a top candidate for the MVP award in 1993-1994 when Jordan was sitting out.  He was also MVP of that year’s All Star Game.

So, Pippen wasn’t always THE GUY, but he was the guy on a very good ’94 Bulls team and he was also THE GUY (basically) on a very good 2000 Blazers squad, but he will always be associated with the classic Bulls teams, and he did, in fact, retire as a Chicago Bull (unlike Michael Jordan).

So many similarities. Never the best but always one of the best. Record setting “lock” for their respective HOF. Long careers, both with only one team. Both rarely missed a game, and played the game the right way..

    Only difference is the rings.

Well, the rings……… and the girlfriends.
