OTTAWA - Syracuse battled back from a 15-point deficit and outscored the three-time defending Canadian national champions Carleton 10-6 during overtime for a 69-65 victory at the Canadian Tire Centre on Friday, Aug. 22.
The Orange trailed 47-32 with less than 15 minutes to play in the second half, but used a 14-0 run to get back in the game with four points apiece from sophomores Jerami Grant and Michael Gbinije and senior Baye Moussa Keita. SU tied the game for the first time at 54-54 after two Grant free throws and took their first lead of the contest moments later on redshirt sophomore Trevor Cooney's jumper from the elbow that closed a 10-2 run with 3:54 left in the second.
In the extra session, Grant opened the scoring with a three-point play to give Syracuse their largest lead at the time of 62-59. Cooney nailed a three to put SU up 66-61 and Grant hit three key free throws down the stretch to seal the win for the visitors.
Grant returned as the Orange's leading scorer with 18 points while pulling down nine rebounds. Three other Orange men reached double figures. Freshman Tyler Ennis tallied 15 points, Cooney chipped in with 12 and C.J. Fair went for 11 points and eight boards. Fair returned to the lineup after sitting out Thursday's game against Bishops.
Keita was the leader on the glass for Syracuse with 11 rebounds and Junior Rakeem Christmas provided a defensive presence with six blocks.
Carleton had three players of their own in double figures. Tyson Hinz posted a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Two-time Canadian Interuniversity Sport Player of the Year Philip Scrubb finished with 14 points and six assists and Clinton Springer-Williams added 12 points and four boards.

After Carleton extended their lead to 15-6, SU went on a 12-5 run to pull within 20-18 following a bank three by Fair and a pair of free throws for Ennis. Grasping to a 26-22 lead Tyson Hinz scored six in a row to push the lead back to 10 as the Ravens ultimately led 32-23 at the break.
At the beginning of the second half, Carleton held a 38-29 lead when Thomas Scrubb and Connor Wood hit consecutive three's to give the Ravens their largest lead of the game at 44-29. Carleton matched their largest lead of 15 nearly a minute later after another trifecta only to see Syracuse go on a 14-0 run to pull within one.
Syracuse wraps up their Canadian tour in against Ottawa at Montpetit Hall on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m.. The game will be broadcast by Time Warner Cable. Additionally, Time Warner Cable has agreed to allow the games to be streamed live by a separate pay-per-view option.
