 Everyone on this site has to some extent done some type of scouting. Whether it be legit and actually going to games, or something as simple as analyzing a player through his statistics or even just basing your thoughts off of Nbadraft.net’s player profiles. No one is always 100% correct on their corrections. Sometimes a guy you think will turn out to be bust actually develops into a solid, or even all start caliber player or maybe there was a player whose hype you didn’t believe yet they surpassed everyones expectations and became amongst the NBA’s elite; then other times there are guys you just have a feeling they will be the next Kobe, Jordan, Shaq, Duncan, etc. yet they fail miserably. 

Now I am pretty sure that all of the users on this website has had that one past prospect who you just knew had it all the makings to be great and would go as far as stating that this guy would be the next big thing. All of us have different views as to who the "perfect" prospect might be. I for example am more prone to favoring athletic swing men as my prospects of choice. Others might prefer points guards, shooting guards, etc. 

But ALL of us had that ONE (or whatever number) guy, that one prospect who you believed would eventually make that leap into superstardom but never did. It happens every year, but who is that one guy YOU thought would transcend into that level but never did?

I’ve had it happen to me just about every year since I’ve been following basketball. Some guys that come to guy Jay Williams, Eddie Griffin, Shaun Livingston… just some random names I just thought of. 

My pick: Jonathan Bender: Bender was the 5th overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft. I had always been a huge NBA fan, but it was around that time when I had just begun really paying attention to the draft and the prospects and scouting. From a physical standpoint this guy had it all. A 7 foot tall small forward with the athleticism of a player much smaller than he, a feathery smooth jump shot with range extending out beyond the 3pt line and the handles of a guard. He set a Mcdonalds All American Game scoring record with 31 points prior to the draft. Of course, coming out of high school he would need his time to develop, and I was just so sure that once he did nothing would stop him from taking over the NBA. On a loaded Pacer team that included guys like Jermaine O’neal, Reggie Miller, Jalen Rose, Al Harrington, Ron Artest… All Star Jermaine O’Neal described Bender as the "most talented player on the team". (http://www.nba.com/pacers/news/bender_page_0405.html) As we all know, his career didn’t quite pan out, injuries to his knees being the primary reason, but as long as he was in the NBA and healthy, I was just waiting for this guy to take over. He didn’t and his career was cut short… but till this day, despite all the other prospects ("busts" if I may) he is still that one guy who was my favorite prospect yet his career didn’t work out. “Of all the guys I’ve ever seen in this league, in 20-plus years, in terms of basketball ability he’s in the top 1 or 2 percent,”. A statement made by Rick Carlisle as he was an assistant coach when Bender used to play for the Pacers.

We’ve all had one. Who was your favorite "bust"??? This is topic I feel that just makes everyone realize that as much as they think they know about the NBA draft and prospects no one is every really sure. Guys can have all the talent in the world but sometimes it just doesn’t work out. Don’t tell me all the busts that the NBA has had because I know pretty much all of them, just talk about who your favorite prospect was who never really lived up to expectations.

i dont think wagner would have been a star had he stayed healthy. His game just didnt translate well to being a star in the nba. Even his rookie year when he hads lots of freedom and played 30 minutes a night he shot 37% from the field. COnsidering scoring was the only thing he did all that well and he was undersized and didnt have iverson type speed, i think wagner would have been a career 6th man probably simialr to waht nate robinson is. Jay will on the other hand i think would have been a star.

My favorite NBA busts

One of them has got to be Darko, as a #2 overall pick yes he is a bust. He is only 25 years old though and is showing that he is capable of playing a little bit of defense. I do believe he is leading the league in blocked shots.

Martell Webster, to be fair he is a bust he came out of HS and I believe was compared to Ray Allen. I really wanted to see this guy succeed when he was in Portland but he was drafted when the team was a disaster and I think it may have stumped his growth, but I could be wrong.

Gerald Green, as stated earlier…enough said. I think this is one guy everyone wants to see back in the league, he stole our hearts with highlight reel dunks

 I’m gonna say bust means that the player didn’t rise to the level you were hoping the player rose too.

First off my hometown bias the Camden Messiah Dejuan Wagner was on his way to stardom.  Yeah he only shot 37% his rookie year but he also averaged over 13 points per game and was only 19.  There is a different between speed and quickness and while Wagner wasn’t blazing fast, he was built sturdy and strong and really hit the holes fast and hard and he did that relentlessly with the ball in his hands.  Gilbert Arenas is the kind of career i think he could of had had he not got sick.  His shot was really coming along.

Eddie Griffin (r.i.p.)  I thought he should of went one in that draft.  He had all the tools in the world.  Was 6;10 with a 7’5 wingspan and a shot blocking and rebounding phenom who also had developing perimeter skills and was a deadly 3 point shooter.  This guy was lights out from beyond the arc and swatted everything near him.  It’ sad he suffered from the personal demons he did because he had the opportunity to really change the game.  

Adam Morrison really disapointed me.  He was so crafty and had such a mean streak I don;t know how he is not in this league.  Like dude ain;t even in the league! WTF?>  He couldn’t make the Wizards really?

Darius Miles too people hyped him up to be the next Dr. J.  I was excited to see how good he could get.  Well it wasn;t great.

Micheal Sweetney and Marcus Fizer round my list off.  Thought Sweetney was going to be a poor man’s Elton Brand and dude hit every shot he took in college and a lot of them were difficult and contested.

And Marcus Fizer was a beast…That guys body was something else.  His body looked sculpted.  I often wanted to run my fingers around his his biceps wit spit on my fingers no homo.

 I’m gonna say bust means that the player didn’t rise to the level you were hoping the player rose too.

First off my hometown bias the Camden Messiah Dejuan Wagner was on his way to stardom.  Yeah he only shot 37% his rookie year but he also averaged over 13 points per game and was only 19.  There is a different between speed and quickness and while Wagner wasn’t blazing fast, he was built sturdy and strong and really hit the holes fast and hard and he did that relentlessly with the ball in his hands.  Gilbert Arenas is the kind of career i think he could of had had he not got sick.  His shot was really coming along.

Nikoloz Tskitishvili was the guy who first sprag to mind, a top 5 pick but out of the NBA soon after his rookie contract. Also Mohammed Sene taken 10th by GSW in 2006 due to his insane length and little else is a contender.
