princejamesParticipantIt’s crazy and a little weird, but when you watch OJ Mayo play and then watch Stephon Marbury Play. You will start to notice that they both have a very similar playing style and a overall skill set that is very similar. OJ mayo moves like marbury, dribbles like marbury, and even has a strong and sturdy body like stephon marbury. And he creates offense for himself in ways that is very similar to how marbury scores. OJ mayo is not the explosive athlete that marbury was in the past and OJ Mayo doesn’t have the elite level first step quickness that Marbury had in the past. But damn, you cannot ignore that their talent level and skill level are just alike. Mayo at one time was considered to be the next great point guard prospect when he was in high school and I’m starting to think that if OJ Mayo had gotten the opportunity to play point guard early in his NBA career, then maybe he would have been a very talented and all star quality point guard that is comparable to the greatness that marbury achieved early in his career.

Memphis MadnessParticipantHe’s a sixth man combo guard off the bench. He is not an ELITE shooter OR scorer. Not a great first step, small arms, his handle isn’t too hot either.
He’s in that Jamal Crawford territory, BUT Crawford is a better ball handler, passer, shooter, and scorer. Crawford looks a lot LONGER too.
AT BEST, OJ Mayo is a fourth option, more likely a 6th man gunner type who can also handle the ball some.

princejamesParticipantWhen OJ Mayo is playing at a high level, he is easily one of the top 5 or 7 Shooting Guards in the leauge.
His Strengths
Number-1: He’s a dynamic isolation scoring option who has the ability to utilize the needed footwork and a variety of advanced moves & offensive skills that allows him to create space with ease, make difficult shots against tough defense, and simply score at a very high level when needed
Number-2: He has great footwork, great shot preparation skills, and great shooting accuracy when running off of screens and pin-downs. As well as being a great spot-up shooter who can utilize great shooting form, great shooting skills, and great shooting touch
Number-3: He’s a dynamic pick & roll playmaker when aggressive and when in attack mode, Because you have to respect his ability to be a dangerous threat as a shooter, ball-hander, and passer. Which helps him at times become an individual who has the ability to manipulate the defense ( meaning – he’s able to force the defense or defender to do what he wants them to do )
Number-4: He’s an dynamic open court player where he can act as a very good play-maker, finisher, and good creator of offense for himself & others with-in fast break scoring opportunities
Number-5: He has a great midrange game that relies on runners, tear-drops, fadeaway jumpers, one to two dribble pull-up jumpers, and step back jumpers
Number-6: And when needed he has the ability to be a very creative and dynamic finisher around the rim. Who can use both hands equally well and who can utilize diifficult angles to score around the rim against tough defenders.
His Weaknesses:
Number 1: He’s too overly depndent on his jumper which turns him into a streaky scorer when he’s not making jumpshots on the perimeter
Number 2: He acutally has a good first step when he utilizes a tight driving angle, but he at times utilzes wide drving angles that create limitations within his first step quickmess
Number 3: He has average ball protection skills, which causes him to be an inefficient playmaker if he’s asked to be the primary ball handler and decision maker
Number 4: He’s a very talented isolation scorer in space, but he is a average shot creator in traffic when he tries to score against multiple defenders

Lotto StudParticipantWhile no one puts any stock into his athleticism or the lack there of, I believe his quick first-step is phenomenal.
It’s very deceptive, because most analyze him as a slow paced player.

drpg913ParticipantI always felt like the Grizz should have kept him instead of Rudy. He was a much better fit. Him Tony were a great combo on the wings.

SpinCycle88ParticipantIf given the opportunity, I think OJ is the next Chauncey Billups. Just a matter of getting in the right system and giving him the keys to run a team. If he could buy into playing more PG than SG, I still see him flourishing.

I believe he’s opposed to facilitating. He has to create those runners and fadeaway jumpers for himself.

Andrew1984ParticipantI saw him play in high school. He was on Bill Walker’s team. He’d post up at the top of the key, catch it, and either turn and shoot, or turn and throw a lob to Walker. It was hilarious. Minimal possible movement.
