Ok I understand part of this new rule change. Sure, when they make aggressive gestures, I can understand giving them a tech. But now, it seems, like the players won’t even be able to talk to the referees without getting technicals. I really hope this doesn’t change the game too much. I hope the refs will let the little things slide.

creepingdefParticipantThey’ve gotta stop treating the players like children, they’re grown men, you can’t expect players to suppress emotion every time. It’s bs.

68Hook-upParticipantPlayers should not be able to talk to the referees. There should be absolutley no relationship between players and referees. When players are allowed to talk to the refs, relationships are developed and some players are officiated differently. I for one am tired of seeing all the "hugy, touchy feely stuff" between players and referees.
"We want players and referees to talk to understand eachother" said Johnson
If the game were called stickly by the book, there would be no need for conversation. Everyone would understand eachother.

cp33ParticipantI always thought referees were ok with players when they would come over and talk to them rather than yell. Guess that went out the window. Good thing Rasheed is retired. He would have racked up a record number of techs this year.

I dont mind them calling either of these two technicals but they gotta make the calls regardless of reputation. I am by no means a Celtics fan but that second call was complete bolshe!t. The only two players in that series that would have gotten a T for that reaction were Perkins and Sheed. I know guys like Kobe Gasol or KG wouldnt have got maybe either of those Ts but thats why we love the nba right?

yellowdunkerParticipantwow thank god for the retirement of Rasheed Wallace he wouldve led the league this year….lol

llperezthis is stupid. The correct rules are already in place and its just up to the refs to enforce them as they see neccesary. Slapping your own arm to show you were fouled is now a tech? Stern is being dumb. This is all about ratings. Fans are constantly complaining about officiating like it is ruining the game so the nba figures if we can get the players to never complain then maybe hte fans will think the officiating is great and they wont see it as a problem anymore.

Toronto16ParticipantPunching the air? The NBA is just covering itself because of that horrible call on Kendrick Perkins last year in the playoffs.
This is the new NBA "Where you are not allowed to show emotions happens."

PureshooterParticipantFor anyone that’s played in a really competitive game, you get fired up and say/do things you never would under normal circumstances. It’s the emotion that comes with intense competition, yet you can’t even talk to the refs? That’s a little ridiculous. The rule should be that you can speak to referees regarding specific rule/call clarification, if done in a dignified manner. All other communication would warrent a tech.

llperezpureshooter, im pretty sure that is the rule. It just says they dont want players continuously talking about a certain call after it has been explained to them already.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 09/24/2010 - 5:46am #405764

PureshooterParticipantI wouldn’t even look at Joey Crawford with these new rules.

MelParticipantB.S. I get the NBA is a business and they care about the image of the sport but I think the new rule is dumb. Stern doesnt want the angry black men to scare its white audience, eh? Beat it.
Maybe Stern should address the atrocity that is refereeing. Players get upset because of the phantom calls, the star treatment, and the blatant bad calls. Stop it.

McDunkinGood thing im a Spurs fan and Tim Duncan doesnt understand what emotions are yet

joecheck88Participantya, this is the reason rasheed retired this year. the nba must want players to be robots. Why would they want to take the emotion out of the game? It makes no sense to me.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 09/24/2010 - 6:18am #405782

SteroidParticipantThere is no reason there should be rules for that kind of stuff at all. That type of stuff is subjective and different in every situation. Giving technicals about that type of stuff should be up to the discretion of the referee.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 09/24/2010 - 6:20am #405783
nateoak10Participant" That’s not what our fans want. "
What makes them think we dont like emotion?
0 - Posted on: Fri, 09/24/2010 - 6:40am #405785

HitsterParticipantI see the Sheed jokes are right in there, I always thought only the Captain could approach the ref so making players respect the ref is fine but the air punching thing is stupid. For example if a player hits a game winning shot or end of quarter/half 3 pointer then punching the air is an automatic reaction or even an oncourt leader trying to gee the team up.
Stern tried to rid the gangster culture that had crept in with the players but nothing was done when players have openly admitted they do recreational drugs which in other sports can result in a two year ban. With the Arenas episode a lot of players may have had a wake up call and there is a 40 plus year age gap between David Stern and the younger players now so some things are percieved differently depending which generation people are from.

Anton123ParticipantThis bullshit might make Perkins go play in China, eventually making it the most exiting league in the world
0 - Posted on: Fri, 09/24/2010 - 6:56am #405790

McDunkinMaybe this is to help cut out some of the cursing in live games?
ABC’s bleeps could not keep up with Rondo
0 - Posted on: Fri, 09/24/2010 - 7:11am #405794

apb540ParticipantThis might turn out to be a good thing for the NBA. Let’s face it, the amount of complaining and chatter that goes on between the players and refs is incredible. There is no need to bitch and moan about every single call, and I will be much happier this year without having to watch Iggy do his stupid ass reactions to EVERY single call. If the refs enforce this rule correctly, meaning understand when to be lax, then this will be a good change.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 09/24/2010 - 7:23am #405800

andxxxParticipantThe reason there are so much complaining in the NBA for referees is because of how much impact the referees have on a game. I can’t think of any other sport where refs have so much impact on the outcome of a game especially with the bias among stars to average players, included, with the phantom calls that go on. This rule will not work and just be a disaster like the new basketball that was trying to be implemented a few years back.
It makes no sense for these rules to be strictly enforced if they were star players like Kobe would get a tech every game even players like Tim Duncan will get techs more than usual. Players will always make hand gestures and in the end these new rules will either not be strictly enforced or be forgotten or rid of all together.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 09/24/2010 - 7:24am #405799

durantula83ParticipantAnother ridiculous NBA rule. Man, I’m disgusted with these childish rules in the NBA. I understand there has to be respect for the refs, whether they’re right or wrong but this goes too far. We’re talking about emotions right here, you can’t control everything you yell or do when you’re 100% tangled up in the game. It was bad enough when they started calling all these touch fouls, crippling some good old hardcore defense. Each year they manage to take it further by adding some UNNECESARRY dumb rules. I know one thing, it was a relief to watch the WC this summer, it was a reminder of what basketball is all about.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 09/24/2010 - 8:21am #405825

apb540ParticipantCmon man I get that reffing is a huge part of basketball but the reactions to every single call were getting mad annoying. And to anyone who says this is "stern vs. blacks," Anderson Varejao is the main person this rule is aimed at!

llperezyeah, im not feeling bringing race into this one.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 09/24/2010 - 8:34am #405827
billykParticipantIts hard to compete at a HIGH level and NOT disagree with some calls or have emotional responses…
0 - Posted on: Fri, 09/24/2010 - 8:36am #405829
billykParticipantThis RULE is DUMB…
0 - Posted on: Fri, 09/24/2010 - 9:21am #405839

MelParticipantThis isn’t a race thing but when he makes comments about hockey and football having masks and not being able to see the players faces, I think that says something without saying something. Also, this is fact but most of the ticket buyers, ESPECIALLY the really expensive suites, courtside, etc. are white. Dont mean to make this a race thing but I think it is.
