From the following nine conferences (American, ACC, A-10, Big East, Big Ten, Big Twelve, MWC, PAC-12, SEC), who would you say is the worst head coach?

The exhibition match prior to this season, has placed a huge stamp on Pastner’s brand.

for throwing out hate, but one coach poped into my head immediatly. He has a successful program and is in a mjor conference where they consistantly are in the top half but…

I don’t like Scott Drew of Baylor. He recruits amazing talent. I fully admit he is a great recruiter. However, his offense always looks slow, with little player movement. Has an old school NBA, clear out one side feel to it.

My biggest problem with him is that he doesn’t seem to develop talent at all. Quincy Miller, Perry Jones, Pierre Jackson, Isiah Austin (feel so bad, he deserved an NBA contract more than most people), Duce Bello, Quincy Acy (found a nice spot as a role player) and Cory Jefferson (who I think will make it in the league as a role player)… all good players, but I didn’t see much growth in their game.

I think good players go to Baylor. I don’t think good players become great at Baylor.

Program prestige is what’s bridging the gap for incoming recruits. "Don’t mess with Texas"

All good choices and I pick Thad Matta. Besides having a cool name he sucks. He is not worse than Rick Barnes or Scott Drew but he deserved unhonorable mention.

Some people get bad coaches confused with coaches who can’t do well with elite talent. Guys like Crean seem to do really well with teams not stacked with great talent, but he holds back teams with an abundance of talent.

Tubby Smith shouldn’t even count anymore because he’s old and beyond caring. He doesn’t recruit at all and he’s been somewhat irrelevant over the last 3 or 4 years.

I’d say Rick Barnes and Scott Drew are two of the worst big name coaches. Obviously there are worse ones that nobody can think of but if you weigh the recuits coaches are able to bring in and the level of expectation those programs have, Barnes and Drew consistently fall short.

Mark Gottfried of my beloved wolfpack.

We are WORSE coming out of timeouts. There is no such thing as an offiensive set for NC state we just have the guards play hot potato with each other. Gottfried single handedly lost us the game againsts Notre Dame when he elected to attempt a full court pass for a layup when we had a two point lead with 30 seconds to go. We lose so many close games and a lot of the blame is that we have absolutely no offensive creativity.

Gottfried is a good enough recruiter to continue to get great players like TJ Warren that bail him out every now agian for how poor of a coach he really is.

Not only would I say he sucks at calling timeouts, he does not get the most out of his players.  He is a hell of a recruiter and recently has had on paper some of the most talented NCSU teams in recent memory and they can’t seem to get over the hump of being an average team year in and year out.

I came into this discussion thinking Rick Barnes, but you reminded me of Gottfried. I have no idea what his teams do in practice because after everything they still play pickup basketball.

Travis Ford is also up there as far as clueless goes.

Steve Alford might actually take the cake however.

Whoever the UNLV coach is. I’ve never seen a team with that much talent doing that badly.
