PlatypusParticipantThe Utah Jazz have quickly moved into the lead to acquire Al Jefferson and were actively trying Monday night to complete a deal with Minnesota, according to NBA front-office sources.
Sources told ESPN.com that the Jazz and Timberwolves are engaged in serious discussions on a deal that would slot Jefferson’s contract into the $14 million trade exception that Utah created earlier this week in its sign-and-trade deal with Carlos Boozer.
It was not immediately known what Minnesota would receive in return, but Utah can complete such a deal without sending back any players to the Wolves.
Sources have consistently said that the Wolves’ main aim in shopping Jefferson in recent weeks is securing multiple future first-round picks and taking back no salary if possible.
The Dallas Mavericks were widely believed to be the most serious suitor for Jefferson in recent days, but the sides have been unable to agree on the terms of a deal.

PurpleMonkeyDishwasherParticipantIf Al Jefferson’s knee is healed he can dominate in the post. If not he’s over paid a bit. Al’s problem is he has a hard time passing out of the double team. Sloan might just be the coach to help remedy the situation.

He’s only 25 though, and played in 76 games last season. The Jazz could actually start him at center, and still start Millsap at the 4. Memo would come off the bench in that scenario seeing he can play both the 4 and 5. A pretty darn good three man rotation really.
Many teams get trade exemptions but never are able to find the right deal to use them, and let them expire (the Boozer one is only good for one year).
It’s not really that much of a risk. It’s doubtful you will find a guy as good as Jefferson through free agency or the draft (unless you luck into a top 5 pick).
If I were the Jazz, I’d pull the trigger.
Not sure how this would affect them on the Matthews front.
Do salaries you acquire through trade exceptions count against your cap that first season? One person I know said yes, and the other said no.

mgreener_34ParticipantIf I was the Jazz I would do this in a heart beat. With all the stars that are leaving their teams lately I wouldn’t let your star PG watch as some of your best players walk out the door, and your team does nothing. Do this move, and make DWill happy, and try to find other pieces. I would love to see the Jazz get an athletic wing who can stroke it from deep to compliment AL and DWill.
