It seems that I am the only one thinking logically and not jumping to conclusions about Kyrie Irving not showing up at the combine. Everybody thinks he is trying to hide something, that is toe is worse than we thought it was, that is body isn’t quite ready for the NBA, that he’s injury prone, and who knows what else. They never seem to realize that it could just be something small and the media is once again trying to take a seemingly small story and sell for something much bigger than it actually is.

Kind of reminds me of the commercial where D-wade is trapped in a locked room and can’t get out. So he yells "Get me out of here". Before you know it its all over the internet and the media, and Heat fans start freaking out because apparently Wade wants out of Miami. Pretty soon you see offers coming from Chicago, Boston and who knows where else. Then when Wade finally gets out of the locked room he has no idea that he was all over the news. It turns out that the Media was once again making somthing seemingly small and turning it into something bigger than it really is. And the public actually believed them. I know it was just a commercial but it makes a good point. The media is always looking for the big story. They do this so often that they sometimes have to use something small and insignificant and stretch it to something that it’s not. The public and the fans need to learn not to jump to conclusions. They need to learn that there are sometimes small stories in sports and they should not be stretched bigger than they actually are. If we do believe these unnaturally big conclusions then we could have the wrong perception about something all because of something small that was not supposed to be that big at all.

Same thing happened with Kanter when he supposedly spurned interviews at the combine with Milwaukee, Toronto, and Utah. It turns out that Kanter was just saving his breadth for the workouts where he knew that these teams would have plenty of chances to talk to him. He was only spurning Milwaukee because he knows he’s a top 5 pick and will not be on the board when Milwaukee is up at 10. But that was the only team he was spurning. No he was not spurning Utah or Toronto or saying, "sorry, I don’t want to play for you. Why else would he get up early in the morning (4:30 am Turkey time) to watch Mehmet Okur play with the Jazz and then go back to sleep when he was a teenager growing up in Instanbul, Turkey?

Here’s what I think about Kyrie Irving not showing up at the combine. I think it’s something small, something insignificant that the media has blown out of proportion. No, he does not have something to hide, no he is not injury prone, no, his toe is not bothering him, no, he does not think Cleveland is going to automatically pick him #1, no, he does not think that he is the automatic #1 choice, head and shoulders above everybody else like John Wall was last year. I think he just doesn’t want to go up against seemingly lesser competition. I think he wants to save his strength for the workouts when he’ll go up against PG’s who are at his level. Like Knight, Walker, Fredette, Selby, and Morris. He knows that he’s going to school PG’s like Smith, Mack, Joseph, Jenkins, Jackson, Goudelock, McCamey etc. He feels that he doesn’t need to do that again. He has already proved himself better than these PG’s so why does he need to show that he’s better then them again? He knows that he needs to prove himself against Knight, Walker, Fredette, Selby, and Morris if he wants to prove that he’s the #1 pick. But that won’t happen until the workouts. And he is perfectly fine with waiting.

I’m not freaking out but the guy only played 12 games at Duke. Maybe he has Chris Paul potential but I haven’t seen him play enough to make that guess.

At the end of the day it’s a weak draft and there’s no better suitor at #1. I do like Derrick Williams but Kyrie is a better fit for Cleveland. It’s pretty obvious the Cavs will select him so there’s no incentive for the combine. He is scheduled to workout for the Cavs though right?

Not sure how Brandon Knight and Kemba Walker are lesser competition.  Not a huge difference between those 3 guys.  All three will be above average point guards (or guards) in the NBA.

How did I make the story bigger than it was?

Despite what you think, him not playing/not testing is a slight cause of concern. There was a lot of concern mentioned about his health when I talked to NBA scouts/journalists at the Hoop Summit last month and his 10% body fat and unwillingness to test (Wall, Griffin, Rose all tested) only hurts that reputation.

I NEVER said he was hiding anything. Just that the possibility is looming.

Really, if you are secure with your status, there is no need to go.  What I dont like when guys skip the 1st day, show up the 2nd day and agents make excuses as to why they didnt show.  If you are the #1 pick and in last years case, #1 and # 2 were set…why show up at all.  If you do show up then you should go both days.

It is very possible that he has something to hide, could be…if so, why go if you are certain of your position?

Here is what you have to realize….by Irving not participating, it just affirms that he knows he is going to Cleveland.

It’s no guarantee he’s going to Cleveland. He seems confident that he is, but Cleveland has made no indication that they are already sold on Irving.

Cleveland has made no "public" indication that they are sold on Irving.
