Three very different point guards, all expected to be early-mid second round picks in this year’s NBA Draft…who would you choose and why?

My money would be on Cat Barber. Has pretty good athleticism, very tight handle, and can be a team’s 2nd-3rd PG off the bench. I think his scoring ability, combined with a great opportunity for him to continue to work on his jump shot, can make him a 10-12 year veteran in the league. Good value for a second round pick.

IMO Ullis isn’t athletic enough to really succeed in the league. I LOVE his shooting ability, leadership, and his basketball IQ, but Isaiah Thomas can make it in today’s NBA because he is one of the better athletes in the game…I don’t see that from Ulis.

Baldwin probably has the best potential out of all three of these guys. His former teammate KAT called him a Russell Westbrook type player. Watched a few of his games, seems very out of control and has very limited PG experience…but to be honest, I saw the same thing from Russell Westbrook back in his UCLA days. Could be really, really good, but also could be out of the league in a few years as well.

Ulis will be off the board by 20, this site is the only one not recognizing this

Three completely different players it will really come down to what a team needs from the position. Baldwin is a versatile gaurd that should be able to fit into just about any teams scheme. Barber is more of an instant offense guy like Dennis Schroeder. Ulis is a great floor general and playmaker like TJ Ford. I think Kay Felder is being slept on and deserves some mention also

I’m almost done making my own personal scouting reports on this PG class, so I feel like I have a decent handle on what they bring to the table. Unfortunately I haven’t really looked at Barber yet, but he has the look of a second round pick based on my admittedly raw analysis.

Initially I loved Ulis and thought he could challenge for a lottery spot in this weak-ish draft. His game is remarkably similar to what Chris Paul was as a prospect… except it comes in a 5’10, sub-150 lbs frame. He is going to be really held back by his extreme lack of size. He plays great fundamental defense but could be overwhelmed on that side of the ball in the NBA. It’s a lot easier to be a pesky defender in college when there is no spacing and almost every player has a shaky handle (by NBA standards), Without great length to compensate for his shortcomings, he won’t be able to have the same impact pressuring the ball against NBA PG’s. I have a late first round grade on him, but I could see him going in the early 20’s with the lack of great talent in this class.

Wade Baldwin will find a place in this league no matter what. He has the ideal physical profile for a PG, and should be a plus defender against both guard positions in time. He can also knock down shots. Even if the ball gets taken out of his hands, these types can have success in the league (see Hill, George). He shows flashes of strong playmaking and vision, but will really need to work on his handle to become a primary creator/ballhandler in an NBA offense. I think he goes before 20 provided there aren’t any character red flags.

Kay Felder is my favorite PG in this class relative to where he’s being mocked/ranked. I’ll save him for another post but I think he’s well worth a late first round pick.

Cat Barber looks like the typical skinny, high usage, low IQ chucker who will struggle to fit in and find a role in the league.  Take the ball out of his hands and I don’t think he’ll know what to do.  He’s not good enough to play his ball-dominant style at the next level.

Ulis is the purest point in the draft but I just can’t ignore the size, especially in this switch heavy era.  He’s gonna get taken advantage of, so hopefully what he brings to the table in terms of floor generalship and intangibles outweighs the big negatives.

Baldwin plays nothing like Westbrook. He’s not nearly as athletic and he’s actually not wild. He’s more solid and fundamentally sound than spectacular.  They only look similar in stature but their games are not alike.  He’s not nearly as ball-dominant and played more of a distributor role as a point, while also being able to play off the ball in a very motion heavy system.
