The Bulls entered the season as a top eastern conference team but finished on the outside of the playoff picture. In a scenario where the NBA doesn’t pull a D-Rose and give the Bulls the first pick and they stay at the 14 pick who should they realistically target? Are the Bulls finally going to go for a point guard or wait till next year to pick up a point guard in next years floor general stacked draft class? I think the Bulls should take consider selecting Dejounte Murray out of Washington. The Bulls seem to be yet again in a situation where fans are wondering are they going to have D-Rose as they’re number one or Jimmy Butler who has been in trade rumours with Boston and Orlando. Murray has the tools and potential to play both/either point guard and shooting guard. If the Bulls end up needing to trade one of the two Murray in a few years would have developed into a decent replacement for either of the two. Even if the Bulls decide not to move either, Murray would be an excellent backup for Rose and Butler and could have a Jamal Crawford type of impact if his jumpshot improves which is not looking like a longshot.

Murray would be a great pick up.. He has all the tools to be a very solid player in the league

IDK why you have negatives on this. The Bulls are done with this core and need to retool. Rose and Butler need more rest without it resulting in Ls. Take someone with high potential for once! This kid has as much potential as anyone outside the top 2!

But we will probably take a senior like Denzel or Brice because Pax and Gar love upperclassmen and hate potential. Jimmy Butler is the exception, not the rule when it comes to NCAA seniors and pro potential. Jimmy was supposed to be a solid role player and he instead decided to turn himself into a monster. Most seniors don’t turn out that way.

Im with you.  I think Dejounte goes top 10. I think he will go ahead of Jamal Murray once the combine and draft workouts start.

I actually thought the Sixers or Celtics could get him w/ one of those late extra picks they both have……

He might start flying up the board though…… But he’s going to need a few years to Develop…… Are the Bulls really looking at a Long Term Rebuild???

IMHO I’m just not sure Murray is a good fit for the Bulls….. Unless they are looking long term…..

I wouldn’t want anything to do with Murray as a Bulls’ fan. To me he looks like streetballer trying to play organized ball. Wild, erratic, doesn’t shoot it well yet hunts his shot more often than not, poor decision-maker, lazy defender, sucks in the half court, doesn’t know how to play without the ball in his hands, more flash than substance, etc. Nothing about him says PG to me either other than the fact that he likes to play with the ball in his hands, so to me he’s a super skinny slashing 2. What would his current NBA archetype be? Will Barton? Eh. There aren’t too many successful slashers built like him bc they can’t play to contact well. I don’t foresee Murray becoming a really good slasher because his natural build is so painfully thin. On top of that, he’s not explosive either so IMO in order for him to be successful he’s going to have to rely on making difficult shots and/or flopping. I’d pass on him and quite frankly I don’t know what others see in him to rank him near lotto and higher. I’d rather the Bulls target perimeter players with shooting and 2 way potential or interior players who can help protect the paint.

If he can improve his shooting pct. He will be an unstoppable scorer.   One of his mentors is Jamal Crawford, also a straight baller.  Draft Murray, sign Crawford.

He could be mentored by MJ and it wouldn’t change my opinion of him.  I don’t see him being able to emulate what Crawford does bc he doesn’t have Jamal’s quickness (he’d also have to make huge leaps as a shooter).  I also would never project any player becoming a Crawford-like player because his ability is so unique. I mean, how can you even assume that a player will eventually become very good at making bad shots?

Crawford would be there to help him become a proffesional and teach him a solid work ethic.  Keep wathcing your Jamal Murray highlights tapes…all his highlight reels from college are jump shots for a reason. If Dejounte isn’t athletic then Jamal must be paralyzed because the difference between their length, athleticism and quickness is staggering.

That’s what coaches and teammates are for.  I’m not sure that a JC mentorship gives DM a leg up on the competition.  JC’s been mentoring DM for a while now and what has that led to? A better understanding of the game? No.  A mental advantage over his peers at the college level? No.  Has JC imparted the importance of physical conditioning, strength and getting his body ready for the grind of the NBA game? If so, then why is DM still built like a 15 y/o anorexic female?

This thread has nothing to do with Jamal but since you brought up the comparison, Jamal has a more translatable game because of his shooting.  He’s not just a catch and shoot shooter, he’s the most versatile (along with Buddy) shooter in the draft.  He can catch and shoot, create his own shot off the bounce, has a pull up game off of ball screens and, unlike most highly touted shooters coming out of college, can shoot on the move.  I mean, Calipari is known for running stripped down, generic offense with very few pro sets, yet this year he added wrinkles just for Jamal in the form of pro style floppy sets bc of his ability to shoot on the move.  That is a very advanced skill that isn’t even very common in the NBA. Because of his shooting versatility he has to be accounted for all over the floor, on or off the ball.  Defenses cannot help off of him, they have to close out hard on him, bigs have to show harder and guards cannot go under on ball screens, which in turn creates more space and freedom of movement for the entire offense.

Neither are explosive, and obviously your description of their comparative athleticism is hyperbole, but whose game requires more athleticism? As a slasher, I’d say DM’s does.  The threat of his shot makes JM’s first step faster and gives him more room to operate attacking harder closeouts, while DM will have to attempt to attack defenders playing off of him and bigs sinking in the paint waiting for him.   On top of that JM has the bigger, stronger frame (just compare their bone structure), which had a lot do with him being the better finisher at the rim in college (66% vs 59%) despite DM being the slasher. DM also had the greater % of assisted shots at the rim so it wasn’t a matter of JM just finishing higher percentage shots off of passes.

I like your argument. It is intelligent and well thought out.  Thing is I’m more if an eye test guy than a stats percentage guy. If i see a guy playing in college I picture him doing that in the pros. So a player either has the stuff to play in the NBA or he doesnt.  College stats usually don’t translate with under athletic guys. I leave that for someone trying to find a role player.  With JM I aee a great shooter who can school kids in college. But he can’t even veat them off the dribble. When he gets to thw NBA he will get chased off the line. Once that happens his lack of athleticism will hurt hus game. The only way he succeeds is by being a high volume shooter. There is no one in the league that just floats around the perimeter and shoots threes without being able to playvdefense or run Pont or set up his teamates. Dude literally has bust written all over him.

He’ll take some time. He might need to be developed the way Schroeder was. Being behind a great PG would be very good for him or most any rookie. I think he’ a top  6 or 7 talent, but could fall because he’s thin, his shot needs work, and the streetball-ness he plays with. While he did get college experience this year, he was hardly coached. Their coach had them try to do a fast break every play. If I remember correctly, they had the fastest pace in college, when this kid really needed to learn the half court offense. The coach played to his strengths, but it was a disservice to Dejounte and added to the street baller perception. He can really get to the rack, but he’ll need to add significant weight to make that happen in pros. Some lucky team nab him. If he did fall all the way to the Sixers later picks (nah), they’d have a total steal, but I don’t know that he’d learn much more than he learned last year.

They may not have a center, Noah and Gasol could be gone as free agents, while their backcourt is getting paid $40million.  With so many centers around their spot in the draft, that is the big need.

Center, then guard, has to be the plan.  They have small forward set, power forward is good too.

Bulls don’t have much cap space this year but will have a load next summer so a lot depends do they try to stay win now or possibly look to blow it up and rebuild around Butler and a top FA.

The key may well be if they feel D-Rose can get back to near his best or not, if he can then try to remain relevant and look for established players perhaps. Gibson is 30/31 now and only has one year left on his deal, Mike Dunleavy has a $5 million plus team option in 2017 so both have trade value.

Noah and Gasol will be FA’s, I could see them being reluctant to overpay Noah given his recent injuries and as he is in his 30’s now. Gasol is pushing 36 and if they may go to best team he thinks he can contend on.

If the gang does stay together I could see Bulls possibly flipping the pick for an established guy. If they do draft then Murray or Skal seem logical choices. Any guys who may start to fall I don’t see the Bulls passing up on either.
