It seems quite probable that Byron Scott will not be back with the Lakers next year. So who will be tasked with developing Julius Randle, Jordan Clarkson, D’Angelo Russell, and whoever they end up with at the top of the draft?

The names we’ve heard so far are Luke Walton, Mike D’Antoni, and Brian Shaw. I’d add David Blatt to that mix (although I’ve only heard him connected to Brookyln so far). What about Kobe? Does he fancy himself a coach? I somewhat doubt it. I don’t see Derek Fisher getting another chance that quickly, but he might get an interview.

Who would be the best choice to figure out how to put the young pieces together?

I think you can take D’Antoni off that list.  That ship has sailed and I don’t think he is as highly regarded as he used to be as a HC.

Shaw’s track record isn’t much better.  Walton is an interesting choice, but I don’t know that he is ready just yet and would likely benefit from another season or two as an assistant.  He did well with the Warriors filling in for Kerr, but I think that was more of a product of the roster than him necessarily being that good of a HC.  Not saying he is bad, just too small of a sample size.

    Kobe?  Just stop.

Blatt is probably the best choice of anyone you’ve named.

Luke Walton takes the Knicks or Lakers Job, Tom Thibodeau will likely be the consolation prize.

Very interested in seeing who wins the race to emancipate Luke Walton & his grateful dead tattoo, Philip or Jeanie Buss. Should make for quite the topic of conversation at the Buss x Jackson dinner table this summer, but knowing Phil I’m sure it’s nothing a few tokes of peyote won’t remedy.

Luke Walton definitely a front runner. Possibly Derek Fisher and Thibs is a good candidate

I’m all in on Walton for numerous reasons, none of which are his record he had while manning the sideline for the Warriors this year.  I don’t think anyone who is an advocate of Walton as Lakers coach is doing so under the impression that he will be able to replicate those results with the Lakers.

Why I am all for Walton is because he can replicate their process.  He’s a forward thinker.  He’s young.  He’s got Laker history, which matters to some people… not me.  He’s a Southern California guy.

As an assistant, and part time coach of the worlds best offense, he knows it inside and out.  It’s a nice offense that fits the younger pieces that they have.  Though they obviously won’t be able to replicate the results of the GSW’s offense, they can replicate the process as I said.

I think if you’re of the belief that a coach is going to come in and turn this team into a contender you are vastly mistaking.

I think the common trait that you see in the great coaches throughout the league today.  Kerr, Pop, Stevens etc… is progressiveness.  They aren’t tied to any one style of play, they can adapt.  But more importantly they put the players that they do have in a position to succeed.  Walton strikes me as this type of coach.

Lack of experience?  Who cares.  The whole roster next year will most likely have a lack of experience.  Find a coach that will grow with the roster.

I mean it seems like an easy decision.  Hire Walton, and use your non salary cap counting resources to surround him with a top notch staff.  I have said this multiple times.  Is Scott Brooks worth 5 mil a season as an assistant?  Probably not, but to the Lakers he is.  They bring in so much money that they can’t use on players, but could be used on a world class staff.  Scotty Brooks has experience that Walton lacks, and he is a great developmental coach, but he has little to no system so to speak.  A perfect candidate for an assistant coach.  Of course, it is easy for me to say, as the money won’t be coming out of my pockets.

Kenny Atkins would probably be my longshot choice.  He’s been on the staff of some great coaches.

Im actually a big fan of the idea of hiring walton with Brooks as an assistant, although I’m not sure if it’s realistic or not. My concerns with walton as coach are primarily on the defensive end of the court but if you have an experienced guy with a strong defensive track record like Brooks next to him it could work. I don’t really like Brooks as a head coach because he isn’t innovative enough offensively, but his teams in okc were always strong defensively. Not sure if either would go for the idea but it might be worth looking into.

Luke Walton: young. had a historic start to this season filling in for Steve Kerr.  High Basketball IQ.  A role player in the league who might be able to identify with most NBA guys better than a former superstar.  The guy was a Laker for his whole career or pretty close to it, right?

John Calipari: might be wanting to get back to the NBA.  He can RECRUIT guys to LA.  If he can get guys like Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis, then you might take him over a better X’s and O’s guy like Luke Walton.

Shaka Smart: younger guy.  Did a lot with not a lot at VCU.  Intense, defense-first guy.

Mike D’Antoni could work IF he gets a lot more pieces around him.  He would also need some strong defensive minds next to him as assistant coaches.

Derek "MILF" Fisher: Wears out his welcome (obviously), but has ties to the Lakers.  I would like to see him add Kobe as an assistant coach.  Kobe can probably be a good mentor if he doesn’t have all the intense pressure that the head coach does.

The OTHER retread coaches being mentioned? Don’t get me started…  Although I DO like an alternate scenario of a former Kentuck coach making a re-return to the NBA: Rick Pitino.  Not a young guy anymore, but if he puts his system in and has some assistant coaches lined up then why not give him a 3 year deal or a 5 year deal?

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: If only for the reason that is time for Cap to put up or shut up about being a head coach.  I would be curious to see his Hook Shot Offense, where ALL five players on the court do nothing but take hook shots from 12 feet.

ME: Share the same birthday as two NBA coaching LEGENDS: Bill Sharman and KC Jones.  Sharman was the coach of the famous 33 straight LA Lakers squad.  Jones coached the legendary ’86 Celtics.  I would scour the internet for info. on the Triangle Offense then work that into some of my ideas for high pick ‘n rolls.  Plus Dribble Drive Motion Offense, IN ADDITION TO taking some of Kareem’s Nuthin’ But Mid-Range Hook Shots Offense.  I would take MORE straight away 3’s.  From a bit further out too, anticipating the NBA getting a 4 point line.  Combining the Triangle, (high) pick and roll’s, dribble drive motion offense, plus full-wind up hook shots by 6’4 combo guards, I would call my offense the Circular Firing Squad.

Anyone doubting Luke Walton not being a very good NBA coach is forgetting this guys dad is Bill Walton.. I could only imagine how much knowledge his father has crammed into his brain since childhood..

Probably just as much as acid induced Grateful dead stories.  Of which I believe contain almost equal value to the basketball knowledge he crammed in there.

I won’t go to war with anyone who hasn’t tried acid at least 3 times to ensure you have recieved a proper trip.

The Lakers might get better free agents, but if Luke Walton goes to the Knicks then I think they can sign Harrison Barnes and Festus Ezeli.  Then go after more guys in 2018.

Then what about a sign and trade between the Knicks and Warriors?

Harrison Barnes, Festus Ezeli, Ian Clark, Kevon Looney, the 30th pick, and a future first round pick to the Knicks for Carmelo Anthony.

The Knicks reload around Kristaps Porzingas as their superstar at the power forward spot.  Barnes fits in at the 3.  Ezeli starts at center with Robin Lopez as a legit backup.

Looney gives them an interesting option at either forward spot.

Ian Clark gives them young, inexpensive guard depth.

They also get a draft pick at 30.

They still would probably have enough money to sign Mike Conley as their starting point guard.

Conley, Aflalo, Harrison Barnes, Porzingas, and Ezeli would be a nice starting five with youth mixed with experience.

Then they have Jerian Grant, Langston Galloway, Ian Clark, Lance Thomas, Derrick Williams, and Robin Lopez off the bench.

The Warriors get one of the other great small forwards in the league if they can’t get Kevin Durant.  Durant is younger, longer, and more athletic, but Carmelo has a better post game.  He is also better as a stretch four.

I think a starting five of Steph, Klay, Carmelo, Draymond Green, and Andrew Bogut would be even better than the one they have now.  Iggy would be the main guy off the bench like he is now.  Mo Speights would step into the backup center role.  Not as athletic as Festus Ezeli but a better scorer.
