 levron is the obvious choice. He’s clearly already in the top 10 but can any other player crack the list? Does KD have a chance? What about AD?

 I think Steph might slide his way into the top 10 of all time. He’s got 2 mvp multiple rings, he’s legit transformed the game of basketball. If He gets more rings then Shaq Kobe or Duncan does that surpass them?

 Notice I said "slight chance"? That means if everything pans out with him. He already has transcendent talents and had one of the best rookie years we have seen. Obviously he needs to develop a serviceable jump shot to be in consideration for top 10. Are there any other players that you think have a better shot or are just 1 skill away from having a chance?

 I don’t agree that he’s a transcendent talent. He’s obviously good, but personally think he’s overrated. Hell, before everyone gets carried away let’s see him be the best player on his own team.

AD has all the skills to be top 10 all time. There isn’t another big in the league who you can book for 28, 11, 3 with 1.5 steals and 2.5 blocks every game, while also playing great perimiter defense and help defense. Also, for all his defensive abilities, I actually think his offensive ability is overlooked. He is easily a top 5 offensive player/scorer in the league, maybe top 3 just with the way he gets his buckets and how skilled he is.

 Now if the Pelicans can find him a starter-level 3 and D wing, in which he curiously did not have for all his years with the Pels, maybe he can finally be part of a consistent winning organization. Last year was a stepping stone, and they for sure will do better next year. Also, he has to keep those injuries in check, luckily though he has never had any serious injury before.

 If AD can stay healthy and have some longgevity he has a chance, he definetly has the talent.

Steph maybe , he is definetly one of the best shooters of all time. Probably the best.

 Other than LeBron and then Durant (maybe) I would go with Steph, AD, Giannis, and that’s about it.

I probably wouldn’t even go with AD or Giannis UNLESS they can land on a loaded team (LA Lakers?).  

Wilt is the only player on my personal top 10 list who has fewer than 3 titles.  On their own, AD and Giannis might luck into one each.  

Kobe and Shaq are guys in my top 10 and they only have 1 MVP award each, but I think a player now would need at least TWO MVP’s to crack the top 10.

Other than LeBron and Durant or Steph I don’t see any of the current guys having a clear path into the Top 10 of all-time.  

Even if Durant gets another MVP award, two more titles and another Finals MVP trophy would he surpass Kobe, or Shaq, or Hakeem, or Duncan, or Bird? Hard to say.

 Giannis is overrated as of now but his upside is not. He is only 23.

AD’s playoff stats are scary. 30, 13, 2 apg, 2,spg, 3bg. Wonder what he could do with a decent team around him.

I think Lebron is already in there, no doubt. 

Top 10 should be something like : MJ, Lebron, Magic, Wilt, Abdul Jabbar, Bird, Russell, Shaq, Kobe, Duncan, Hakeem, with players like Dr J, Barkley, West and Oscar Robertson outside.

Meaning a player would need so surpass all of the outsiders and one of the top 10.

KD is talented enough, but I in my eyes he gave up the chance to be considered one of the best ever  when he joined the 73-9 GSW.

The players that are also talented enough are the ones said here already – Steph, James Harden if he keeps improving, AD, Giannis, Embiid and Simmons. But except Curry, they all have to add so many more accomplihsments and awards that I have a hard time seeing them happen.

I wouldn’t say he’s “system dependent”. In a completely different system at age like 23 or 24(?) He was 6th man of the year on a team that went to the finals. I’m almost positive he would be successful anywhere in the league. I mean do agree he’s a little overrated but you’re really being overstated to say he’s the most system dependent player in league history.

Stephen Curry is already out – he had too many bad seasons to start his career (he wasn’t an all-star until his 5th season) KD did it in his 3rd.

Top 10, to me is an unbelievably elite list:

1) Michael Jordan

2) LeBron James

3) Magic Johnson

4) Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

5) Bill Russell

6) Larry Bird

7) Wilt Chamberlin

8) Tim Duncan

9) Shaquille O’Neal

10) Hakeem Olajuwon

 

Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis are really the two that stand out to me as possibilities…but even then…look at the company you have to pass up…

 THIS is always a confusing discussion for me. Are you talking top ten resumes? Are you talking stats? Are you talking who’s team would win wih the same four others? If they played on-on one?

SHAq is not very good at basketball but he is a once one a century freak  

Curry is the best shooter hands down of all time but only the size of a normal human  

Too many guys get cheap rings either because of a bad year or great teammates  

Others don’t  get enough because of all-time great teams  they oppose

What about longevity?

Well, for one thing there is no set formula for evaluating who the top 10 players of all time are so this is always going to be extremely objective, especially when you get into comparing players who played in completely different eras. That’s why I usually stay away from these debates. For example, wilt undoubtedly is a top 10 player based on his dominance of his era but it’s unlikely he would have dominated the same way in this era. Still, there is no way to know so you have to judge him based on the competition level he faced.

Out of current players lebron is obviously already there. Durant has a legitimate case to put up a top 10 overall resume, but I feel like some people will never really give him his credit because of the backlash from the GS move. Curry has a very small chance. No one else is really close right now, but there are several guys like Davis, Giannis, Simmons, embiid etc. that have plenty of time to get there.

LBJ is certainly in there probably more likely top 5. KD is another obviously one. 

Is there any argument for veteran players such as Dirk to be considered or even D-Wade I’d probably say not so we know how high the bar is.

AD would need a Tim Duncan or KG level career to be considered too.

The guys 25 and under are pure guesswork so I’ll leave them out of the equation.

Steph Curry would be a contender and is putting together the sort of resume to be considered a potential candidate.

Harden and Westbrook have put up great numbers and if they comtinued to do so might come into conversation put lack of titles at this moment is the huge issue.

KD, Steph, AD, Giannis and Embiid have a "chance" to varying degrees.

KD is almost a lock, health permitting. – 80% chance

Steph will probably settle somewhere in the teens or 20’s, but he’s been transcendent thus far. If the ring count gets crazy, he’ll obviously inch closer and closer to top 10. – 30% chance

AD would need a few DPOY’s and MVP’s – neither of which are far fetched – and to win a couple rings (not as likely) while averaging close to 30 and 12+ for an extended period. – 10% chance

Giannis potential is scary, but I see him having a KG like career where he puts up great numbers and is dominant on both sides of the ball consistently…but doesn’t win until later in his career when he leaves his drafting team and goes somewhere with another established star or 2. He’d also need multiple rings and multiple MVP’s – 5% chance

Embiid I don’t know if you can trust him to stay healthy long enough to make a case. But Olajuwon footwork with Shaq-lite power, he’s capable if everything goes right. – 1% chance

Im going to say Donovon Mitchell has a chance. He will need to keep improving but that rookie season was impressive. 

KD has managed to keep his stats great on GS and with a few more rings I think you could argue him being top 10. 

AD aka glass could make it if he can shed his glass label. Seems like the perfect 5 for the next decade.

I agree with TaylorCondrin, except about Stephen Curry already being out. The only bad season Curry had was his 3rd season due to injury. He was definitely an All-Star caliber player his 4th season and was considered a big snub. David Lee was the Warriors’ All-Star that year, which was a joke since there’s no doubt Curry was the best player on that team. 

I’d say Curry still has a chance simply due to the fact he’s literally been transcedent, such as SmooveKrypt mentioned above. Not only that, I think he’ll be one of those players (like Ray Allen, Reggie Miller, Dale Ellis, etc) who’ll be able to play for a long time. Long after Curry is past his prime, he’ll still be able to play a major role due to his shooting and ability to move without the ball.
