kaceyParticipantI have noticed many of you have played high school basketball or are currently playing HS basketball.
I’m just curious to see if any of you former high school basketball players ever played against a player that is fairly known in the NCAA or is now an NBA player/prospect.
As for you players currently in high school have you all played against any prominent, headed to D1 soon-type players?
Here is my list:
Corey Brewer. Came up to our city for my school’s summer league camp. This was before my junior year and I only played about 10 minutes against him. He was fairly funny, he was constantly talking during the game.Chris Lofton: Played him in a mid-season Christmas tournament. Our team was very intimidated and we all sucked. Someone on our team even threw it directly to Lofton during the game.
Luke Zeller (Bulls summer league team): Played him in a summer scrimmage at his HS. He dominated. Don’t remember Tyler ever being there.
Albert Jackson (F/C for Georgia Bulldogs): He was solid when we played him, he transferred to Oak Hill the year after we played him. We won, but it was their 1st game of the year and our 3rd.
Ty Rogers (obviously no where near the NBA): He is the guy that hit that sweet 3 pt shot at the buzzer to help WKU in their first round upset 2 years ago. Great shooter in HS, we held him to 14-16pts. He was all his team had, averaged 20+ pts.
I feel like there may be a couple more, but I can’t think of them right now. Within the past year, I’ve played against Perry Stevenson and Ramon Harris at the gym on UK’s campus, but that was just pick-up basketball.

gatorheelsParticipantI have personally met a lot of players currently in the NBA. Watched a ton of pro players play in person…got lots of autographs.
Ha the only notable player I have played against is Scotty Hopson (Tennessee) at the YMCA

llperezI played against quite a few college players. As for NBA, Tyson Chandler, Gilbert Arenas, Tayshaun Prince, Dijion Thompson.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/10/2009 - 6:35pm #179849
kaceyParticipantllperez: Go ahead and name those college players. Don’t hold back on us.
Gatorheels: I have a buddy that went to University Heights Academy for one year and played with Hopson. Did you play Scotty at a YMCA in Tennessee or elsewhere?

llperezhardly any big names. Those pro’s were the biggest name guys I played against. But some of the college guys were Andrew Zahn who went to Arizona, half the UCSB team, and a couple UCLA and USC players, but no one too special. I had a highschool teammate named Nick Curtis and he went to USC for 4 years and played overseas. Also, I played against some of the guys from the And1 mix tour, as well as r&b singer Brian McKnight.

kaceyParticipantgator: You still living in BG? That city is getting big. I was close to attending WKU for my last two years of school.
JordanC: Did Jon Hood look any good? I’m skeptical about him, he put up great numbers, but stats don’t tell the complete story in high school, especially in certain parts of Kentucky where the competition is very weak.

maravich44ParticipantI never played against anybody that was a huge star in the NBA but had the priveldge of having dinner with Dr. J.! One of the greatest thrills of my life, and every bit as cool and classy as he comes of on tv. He has an awesome sense of humor and is not at all full of himself. A truly great guy. Also, I plan events for a living and coordinated a charity 3 on 3 in Chicago. Honorary Chair was Coach Ray Meyer. Also among the nicest and classiest people that ever lived in my book. Told me some stories that were were very interesting including how Isiah Thomas verbally committed to him to attend DePaul.

MagikKnickParticipantI’ve played with a few players, no one of credibility though
Mike James & Sebastian Telfair mainly
Mike James is from my area, and he comes around sometimes, plays with the little kids and what not
&before Telfair was an NBAer and was the best thing out of HS, i met him in NYC and we had a little pickup game going..0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/10/2009 - 6:46pm #179861
llperezYeah, dude can ball. He won some celebrity all-star game mvp’s. It was funny because there was this small gym in Oxnard that I used to always ball at, and someone said Brian Mcknight was coming. I just figured it was a nickname for someone who looked just like him, but it was actually him. I ran a couple games aginst him.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/10/2009 - 6:52pm #179865
gatorheelsParticipantNope no longer live in BG. I might know your buddy from UHA. I saw Jon Hood play in person one time when he was a Junior…when they played UHA. UHA had Scotty Hopson then. I wasn’t impressed at all with Hood. He has descent size, pretty good shot, and he seems like a smart player. However, he isn’t that athletic, got hung trying to dunk one. A 6’4″ guard Tyshon Edmunson (plays for St.Johns now) shut Hood down. So if that small of a guard can shut Hood down I am kinda worried how he is going to be a factor in the SEC. I’m sure Hood has improved soom since then though since this was like almost 2 years ago or so.

T-WOLF FANParticipantOne of my friends has a brother that currently plays in the NBA, Joel Pryzbilla currently of the Portland Trailblazers. I have played against him many times. One time his bro and I played against joel and Sam Cassell when Przy was playing in Milwaukee.
I have also played against Trent Tucker when he was at a basketball camp that I attended.0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/10/2009 - 6:53pm #179869

gatorheelsParticipantNotable Players I have met…got their autographs….Rashad McCants, Tyler Smith, Chris Lofton, Vincent Yarbrough, David Lee, Bonner, Matt Walsh, Anthony Roberson, Corey Brewer, Al Horford, Noah, Taurean Green, Tyrus Thomas, Brandan Bass, Glen Davis, Marquis Daniels, Shan Foster mostly SEC players
I am sure I am forgetting quite a few.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/10/2009 - 7:08pm #179876
kaceyParticipantOnly 5 minutes? That has to be the shortest pick up game in history.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/10/2009 - 7:09pm #179877
kaceyParticipantShoot me an e-mail and I’ll see if you know this guy. He is very outgoing, but like I said he was only there for one year.

llperezsummer before his juior year of hs and he was already 7 feet. I’m 6-4 and the second tallest guy on the team, so I had to try and box him out. It was’nt pretty. We only lost by 20 which was pretty good because they were beating everyone else by 40.

kaceyParticipantAll of them are pretty cool.
tezo’s list is the most impressive. Tezo, did you play D1 ball in the Big 10 or something? I can tell you play ball in Indiana, especially considering whom you have played in pick-up games. Indianapolis to be more exact. I’m surprised Hansbrough isn’t on that list.
However, the coolest story is JWHITES’ one about playing Pryzbilla and Sam Cassell.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/10/2009 - 7:29pm #179885
IndianaBasketballParticipantThat’s tough lol. I went to middle school and high school w/ Jason Gardner, and he was the best I’d seen until I seen Eric Gordon. Gordon is by FAR the best I’ve played w/ or seen up close. I played w/ Zach Randolph while he was in high school and he was pretty impressive. Rodney Carney too and he was REALLY athletic. McRoberts was impressive for a LONG time. Dominic James was impressive too. Quick, explosive and athletic (hops like I’ve never seen), BUT he’s NEVER been able to shoot. I mean and this goes back to him being in 5th grade lol.

aarondsonixfanParticipantI have played and am currently playing against some of the Best talent in the Nation. Joshua Smith from Kentwood is an absolute beast and is definately going to the NBA. Every single Pac 10 team as well as basically every D1 team wants him. He is probably going to either UCLA or UNC. Also Tony Wroten, the #1 Junior in the Nation is an absolute freak. He is really athletic and litteraly (spelling) SCORES AT WILL!!! I swear you can’t stop this guy other then if he has a poor shooting performance and his confidence goes down, but that usually doesn’t happen. Just trust me, these two will be in the league

Da1potParticipantI actually go the opportunity to play against Gheorghe Muresan as he just showed up to my rec center one day for a clinic or something. We asked him to play five on five like an hour before the the clinic started and he agreed. He barely had to jump to dunk and had a suprisngly soft shot. Despite the fact he was playing against kids, he woudn’t let up and treated it like a true game!

kaceyParticipantVery cool stories. I was surprised by the number of gifted athletes some of you all have played/seen play. It must be cool to be able to go to the YMCA or a local court and have NBA players show up.
It must be cool to have played at KU’s campus when they had solid/NBA potential players.
My two years at UK was spent with some not so NBA-type players. If only I had one more year left, I could be running with Wall or Bledsoe.
