ilike.panochasParticipantThis question popped up in my mind randomly, and decided to post it. Which team do you guys think has the worst future ahead of them?
I would probably go with the Suns. I thought about the Bobcats aswell, but I think they have better young players than the Suns. Even though their competitive right now, I can see Nash only staying in his prime for another 2-3 years. They don’t have any young player that they can groom and be the face of their franchise, their best young player is Robin Lopez and that doesn’t sound good once Nash is done. They may be a lottery team this year, but their not bad enough to pick in the top 5, so they dont have a shot at any of the blue-chip prospects.

bigblackNbeautifulParticipantI will get alot of crap for this one but I think portland future is all of the sudden shrinking from very bright to dim.
I honestly thought they were ready to compete for a title but bad luck has killed them. B roy will never be the same, Oden will never be healthy . They have some good players but no great ones. their best is aldridge. I think they will still be in the playoffs for a year or two but not contending. Then when you lose rudy roy and oden to free agency, camby and miller aint gettin younger so your future looks like its Aldridge, Batum, Cunningham, Johnson, Babbit, and Mills…….. That aint good but it aint bad enough to suck completely. the blazers may spend lots of year in mediocre land landing a lot of draft picks 13-17 which is hard to build from.
Just my thoughts…. although i think charollete is in the same boat.

mgreener_34ParticipantProbably the Mavs to be honest. Like you said before about the Suns they aren’t getting any younger. Marion, Dirk, Kidd, Butler, Hayword, and terry are all older players. Roddy is a nice point guard for the future, but other then that the Mavs truly have nothing going forward.

sammybuckeye13ParticipantIn 5 years, Duncan will be 39, Ginobili will be 37, Jefferson will be 35, and Parker will be 33 and McDyess will be retired, and it’s not like Blair, Splitter, Hill or James Anderson is going to be an all-star anytime soon.

fgrrghgParticipantgotta go charlotte. Who do they have to build around? Once larry brown leaves id assume steven jackson will want out asap and that leaves them pretty bare. Your not building around wallace and their young talent isnt very good at all. Tyrus will hurt their cap space for the next 5 years as well. Although maybe they will be bad enough to get a top 5 pick in the next couple years, but right now they are just stuck in that middle helpless ground..

MkadozaParticipantHey mgreener, what about your team? unless your team get a young player soon, you better hope the Older 3 can play till forty or Rondo starts averaging 25-10-15.
Suns, Pistons, Bobcats, Denver all come to mind as well.

ShekiruBoomParticipanti think maybe due to the recent Roy injury, trail blazers are screwed for the future. even with brandon roy, they were a borderline contender and now that it seems like Brandon Roy will probably be unable to lead the team, they are stuck in between a lottery team and a true contender which is actually the worst place to be. As a lottery team, you get a chance to start fresh and build a new team and as a contender, you can obviously, contend for the championship but it seems like the blazers are stuck as a perennial 40,50 win team that will never truly contend for a championship

HitsterParticipantWith every team there will be a time when you have to rebuild unless they always continue to struggle, the likes of Atlanta, Oklahoma etc were lottery teams for several years with numerous high picks until they suddenly clicked and became play off teams again. Others like the Clippers, T-Wolves despite all having young talent seem forever stuck in the lottery and never seem to progress.
Teams like the Celtics will need to rebuild within a few years but come summer 2012 they get nearly $40 million off the cap so their future may well depend on what FA’s they can sign then. The likes of Phoenix will have to continue to rebuild and with Nash pushing 37 soon then unless Dragic can step up then they will have a big hole at PG. They have a decent complimentary crew but would need a top FA to maybe make them really relevant again.
The Spurs are ageing but with their strong front office I could see them rebuilding post Duncan and Ginobli as Burford and Coach Poppovich have quietly added Anderson, Splitter, Blair and Hill so maybe again they would be one top FA away from being a true force again when Duncan finally packs up.
Denver is a team that could completely have to rebuild soon and would the Kroenke family consider them a priority in their sporting empire.
Detroit also have some hefty contracts and unless some players step up could be in the lottery for a few years to come.
Dallas are ageing but I could not see Mark Cuban letting them slip out of contention so he’d probably fund major FA moves for the team.

MkadozaParticipantCan I just say what has happened in Portland really saddens me. Great fans with a team cursed by injuries. They have all the talent required. But they can stay on the floor and its a damn shame. We should have been lauding the Portland Big 3, who through smart drafting a shrewd moves have 3 high picks as the faces of the franchise with the Batums, Millers, Cambys filling out really solid core of players. They deserve better.

mikeyvthedonParticipantIt is looking like the Suns might be a good choice. Right now they are full of vets and have very little to build on for the future. Only trades or free agency could stop them from going down a long ways. My outlook on this whole situation is that the teams that will tend to go through long downfalls have poor ownership. That is one reason I do not see the Blazers having a problem. Even when the Blazers "struggled", they were back in the play-offs only a few years later. Paul Allen is an owner who will go out and do things to make sure his team maintains a high level, plus with the young talent on Portland already, despite the injuries, I would be surprised if the Blazers are still not at least a play-off team 5 years from now. The Roy thing is worrisome, and I know people have no faith in Oden, but I would put my faith in ownership to say the Blazers if down, will not be down for long. Two teams I would maybe throw out there are Denver and New Orleans. Both will more than likely have to start from Ground Zero at some point in the near future. I have a feeling that Melo and Paul will join forces in New York, it seems to be that common conspiracy that might be a little hard to believe right now, but I see it happening. New Orleans would be in worse shape than Denver if this occured. 5 years is an awful long time though, and so many things can happen. Five years ago the Blazers were 21-61 and have turned into a consistent play-off team. Before their few years without postseason play, they made the play-offs 21 seasons in a row. If I were to bet against a team, I would not bet against the historical teams, which are the Knicks, Celtics and Lakers, who always seem to attract players or right now the Heat, Thunder, Blazers and Jazz. The last two just because they seem to have great basketball personnel. But, if the best way is to look at what the teams current outlook on the future is with the prospects they possess, Phoenix finishes dead last. Cleveland is close, though they have a healthier cap situation, but I see there being big problems in New Orleans down the line. The reason I think the Bobcats might turn around is #23, as long as he is at the helm, he should be able to get something done eventually. Right now the Bobcats future looks bleak, but someone eventually will want to come play for Michael Jordan.

MuggsyParticipantEvery year the Clippers roster looks very promising, and every year they fail. I don’t know if this team is cursed or what but you can pretty much count on the Clippers to consistantly be a bottom feeder. They have amazing young talents right now, but they have in the past as well and it didn’t work out then and so far this year it isn’t working out either. In five years Griffin will be headed to another team, Baron will be gone, Kaman will be getting pretty old, about all they will have left is Eric Gordan and whoever they pick up in the lotteries to come.
I’m really not trying to hate, I honestly like the Clippers and always have since I was young, but after consecutive failures it’s just easy to pick them.

mikeyvthedonParticipantIt is really easy to pick on the Clippers, but I have a feeling they have a little something going for them. It more than likely would only help if they had a bad year this year, it would more than likely give them a really solid core of young talented players. Depending on what the new CBA looks like, the Clippers should also be able to finally do something they have not really had the ability to do, due to really poor management and ownership over the years, which is sign their young talent. If Eric Gordon, Blake Griffin and co. are RFA’s, the only thing that would hold the Clippers back from at least becoming a marginally solid team would be injury. If they use a pick this year to draft some depth on the wing, they should be in a very good position 5 years from now. Blake Griffin is a player you have to like a lot, and as much as Tezo will point out my supposed distaste for Eric Gordon, I like him a lot too. I have always thought Al-Farouq Aminu had a ton of upside, and Bledsoe also looks like a winner. More than likely they could find themselves in a decent cap scenario too, which might drop the dead weight in a 5 years from now scenario which means Baron Davis and Chris Kaman. So, I think the Clippers at least have what appears to be a bright future, though they have screwed it up before. Really, they probably just dodged some land mines with Quentin Richardson, Corey Maggette and Darius Miles all wanting ridiculous long term deals that none of them have deserved (Maggette, no matter how much he scores, never seems to win, much less lead teams to wins, it was a good call to get rid of him when they did). Even Elton Brand, who at the time looked like kind of a lame non-signing, now looks like a great move in retrospect. The Clippers right now have a situation I feel will be pretty difficult to screw up in 5 years from now, and I say they keep it together.
