llperezlets pretend you are a gm, what element of being a gm do you think too many actual gm’s in the nba consistently screw up. This could have to do with the draft, trades, free agency, how they run their franchise in any way that you often dont agree with.

llperezlol, okay but on a broader scale i guess you are saying overpaying players?

McWinningParticipantI think taking into account measurements & upside too much in the draft and ignoring hard workers, who have heart.
THeres been a lot of good undrafted players like that that just shouldve been drafted.

sheltwon3ParticipantThey misjudge the talent level of drafts and don’t try after missing out on someone they really wanted.
They pick the wrong times to draft for need over best available.
They find ways to say a player has issues and let someone else take a guy that has a first round talent(see Cousins).
They take a guy that is not right for their system just because eveyone else would take him there( see Beasley)
They don’t put harder to get a player they really want and can help them.
(see Curry(knicks) and Turner(Minny)They let quality bigs fall into the second round
Do they not realize that front court help is vital. I mean if you have multiple picks taking a big with a mid 20 regardless of his rawness rarelly is a terrible move.It is the bigs that people take earlier than they should that hurt teams.

RUDEBOY_Participanti think the knicks management made a mistake by letting David Lee go…He was a fan favorite..plus they had the money to sign him and still get Amare,Felton & another max player..

sheltwon3ParticipantI forgot overplaying players(see Wesley Mathews) and outbidding yourself(see Rashard Lewis)

sheltwon3ParticipantRudeboy it would not have been wise to play Lee and Amare together. Knicks actually have some legit Centers now and they may have to play Amare at Center unless they want to.

McDunkinAlso…take this summer for example…letting players walk when you could get something from a sign and trade

sheltwon3ParticipantHow did I lose point for just giving my take on what Gm’s do. I am not tripping on points but there are some things that would not give a person reason to take your points unless they are just being a holes.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 07/22/2010 - 8:14am #359984

RUDEBOY_ParticipantDavid Lee isnt a traditional big..he plays the passing lanes and is a floater..they wouldnt have been like Jefferson & Love in Minnesota..Those guys do most of their work in the post…plus i’m sure Lee would not have mind coming off the bench….

duhrant35ParticipantI think the major problem is looking to short term and not thinking long term. Also, signing role players to contracts that are not only too much, but too long. The MLE has been used extremely poorly by a number of GMs.

dahoodrecruiterParticipantgiving up on good young players to quick
0 - Posted on: Thu, 07/22/2010 - 11:03am #360148

SpencerIsHawesome2ParticipantNot risky enough. Many GM’s, and maybe rightly so, go with the hype instead of their own opinion because if things go wrong then it doesn’t come back at them as hard.
Some just flat out make moves to simply make a move. Again, might not be there fault. Patience isn’t something exemplified in the NBA, if a GM on a struggling team doesn’t make immediate moves it often looks bad for them.
All in all, my negative opinions relate to job security. And to be honest, if I was in their shoes, it’s hard to say I wouldn’t do the same to make sure I get those extra millions for another year or two.

OhCanada-ParticipantSheltwon whining about points again…
Im sick of GMs acquiring stars thinking their team will improve instead of aqcuiring complementary players. Im also sick of teams overpaying for players in their declining years.

Afactor4ParticipantLetting go of fan favorite young players with obvious potential for a player that’s just had a career year (see Darius Miles and Andre Miller trade)
Not signing a top dog in free agency despite salary cap openings and instead resorting to cheaper options (see Rasual Butler, Quinton Ross, Bobby Simmons etc…)
Drafting players in the first round that likely won’t get a significant chance in the team (see Korolev, Melvin Ely)
And I just used examples of the Clippers for clarity, although there are various other examples of such moves by other GM’s around the league.

delfamParticipantI hate when GM’s are caught between what they want to do. If your going to rebuild and go young and get draft picks then do it. If you want to win a championship then trade your young pieces and picks for veterean players.
I hate GM’s who try to stay young but be just good enough to make the playoffs, either get young or try to win, don’t go both.

B-ball fanParticipantI agree with delfam. My biggest peeve with gms is when they seem to try to build a solid team that has no championship potential, such as Atlanta or Toronto.
Also when gms overpay for players who put up big stats one year in a situation that was really good for them, such as Milwaukee with Bobby Simmons or Toronto with Hedo Turkoglu
Also when gms become infatuated with big men with perimeter skills who don’t bang down low: Bargnani going to Toronto 1st overall when they already had Bosh, Milicic getting 20 mil from Kahn, Yi Jianlian going 6th overall.

delfamParticipantI agree with B-Ball, Big men who can shoot never win championships, I just don’t get why GM’s love them.
I agree on your Atlanta Hawks point, they have no shot of winning a championship so why not rebuild, and they just resigned Johnson which straps them financially for 5-6 years, I just don’t get it.

sheltwon3ParticipantCanada I can care less about points, I lost like 300 in less than a week but still, I do have a problem is someone is just going around taking my point just because and then hiding like a little punk. Those are coward moves especially when it is obvious.
