ilike.panochasParticipantObviously there’s this myth that "Superstars" or even "All-Star" players doesn’t usually make good NBA coaches. But if you had to choose amongs current NBA Superstars/All-Star players thats playing today, who would make a good NBA coach somewhere down the road?
I think if he puts his heart and head into being one, I think Kevin Garnett would make a good motivating coach. He has the basketball IQ, he preaches defense, and one of the most important quality of all he has "leadership".

llperezinteresting question. Predicting how well someone can coach is darn near impossible. Characteristics you obviously have to have is work ethic and leadership. But there is also the whole x’s and o’s element that we have no idea if guys would really be good at no matter how much they dominate on the court. Ray Allen might make a good coach. CHris Paul too.

aarondsonixfanParticipanthaha i think that it is funny that when you think about "who would be a good coach in the future", you think of a very good current point guard. They usually end up being the best coaches because they know about basically every position. So in this case, it would easily be Jason Kidd. I think he would make an amazing coach imo.

HitsterParticipantGrant Hill has always been regarded as a model professional and has been able to return after all his injuries to still play at over 38 years old due to his great basketball IQ so I’d guess he might have coaching potential down the line.
The PG trio of Nash, Billups and Kidd could all be sound choices, Ron Artest as a coach would be worth watching.
Other players below All Star Level like Raja Bell, Derek Fisher etc are always seen as good potential coaches.
Kobe could maybe coach but would he want to or need to remains to be seen, the same perhaps with KG also. Tim Duncan could be a contender when Coach Popovich steps down as that might tie in with Tim Duncan retiring as a player and the Spurs have such a strong front office with Burford, Grant etc that they would be able to provide Tim with all the support he would need.
As a long shot maybe someone like Antawan Jamison who has always been a good professional, T-Mac if he can never regain his old form and has to retire or even Ben Wallace who would surely make a great big man coach or a defensive specialist.

HitsterParticipantPau Gasol is a good call and maybe also Dirk, if we are considering Battier how about Tayshaun Prince who has had experience of being on a contending team from 2003-2008 and played under Coach Brown, alongside Billups etc.

ilike.panochasParticipantAlso Doc Rivers has mentioned it several times, that he thinks Rajon Rondo would someday make a better coach than him, the reason is because his basketball knowledge is advance for only 24yrs old. Not sure if Doc is being humble by such statements or really does think Rondo will be a better coach.

ilike.panochasParticipantI don’t know about DRose. He’s a good player and seems to have good basketball IQ, but his personality sorta reminds me of Duncan. He’s a type of leader that leads by example, to be a good coach you usually have to be a good vocal leader as well, I don’t see it with Rose or Duncan.

HitsterParticipantThe other problem with great players becoming coaches can be their roster isn’t as good as they were at their peak and you may see them perhaps expecting too much from their team and not being able to understand when they don’t produce what is expected of them.

creepingdefParticipantMy bad, didn’t read the title. Definitely J-Kidd or Nash. Being point guards (who are pretty much extensions of the coach on the court), it’d be an easy transition from player to coach.
When you think about it, plenty of coaches in the NBA were PG’s:
Scott Brooks, Doc Rivers, Avery Johnson, Scott Skiles

blackflash234ParticipantTo me, a guy that would make a great coach someday would be a guy like Jarrett Jack of the Toronto Raptors who just got traded to New Orleans today. He brings a element of leadership to every team that he’s been on and he’s not afraid to call out his team when things aren’t going well. Ever since Bosh left the Raptors for Miami, Jack took it upon himself to help mentor and workout with alot of the young guys on the young Toronto Raptors like DeMar DeRozan, Sonny Weems and Amir Johnson. And it’s shown by their individual play this season.

joecheck88Participantyao ming, he already has tons of experience on the sideline.
but seriously, all the names said are good choices but are very unlikely to be coaches. even derek fisher is questionable. it would be someone like steve blake or someone like that.
bit i have a couple names in mind, even though they havent been all stars or superstars. but they have been better than a derek fisher(not championships wise). i think kirk hinrich and andre miller would make decent coaches.
