RUDEBOY_ParticipantI just saw online that the Cavs have traded JJ Hickson to The Kings for small forward Omri Casspi..
I knew there was something going on when they drafted Tristan Thompson at number 4..But i thought it might be at the trade deadline that they’ll see what they could get for Hickson.I wasnt it to happen this quickly..I think they could’ve gotten more for Hickson then Casspi..
The deal is expected to be announced and completed in a few hours..There might be other players involved in this deal…So Stay Tuned……

cward23ParticipantNICE for the Kings. nice for the Cavs on a lower scale considering who they were starting at the Sf position.

Lotto StudParticipantStrange on the Cavs behalf to get that in return! In the mean time the Kings BEEF up that frontcourt for the future to "dominate" the West.

cward23Participantlol@dominate the west. Nice young roster but for some reason i see Cousins,Evans being a lower level Shaq/Kobe (not ability but complaiing about who’s team it is and getting the ball). And that doesn’t include having Jimmer who won’t be a problem in that reguard but wo’t see a shot he doesn’t like. There players just don’t fit together as far as being potential title contenders IMO.
I like Evans But ball dominate players like him tend to be very hard to build around i.e Iverson

RUDEBOY_ParticipantBut what does this mean for Jason Thompson?
And this move means Cousins moves to center..Westphal said he wanted Cousins to play power forward…
Didnt they say they were going to resign Dalembert?
I’m thinking there will be more players in this deal…

I May Be WrongParticipantwhat a huge steal by the Kings if it is true. Are the Cavs aiming for the first pick again? sheeeeeeeeeesh
But man, that Kings roster is looking better and better by the minute. The only thing that can make them into a possible playoff team would be a better coach. Honestly, I hate Westphal for that young team and I think it would be pretty cool if they brought back Adeleman back for a few years and utilize all this talent properly

NCarmean18ParticipantJimmer Fredette, Tyreke Evans, Fransisco Garcia, JJ Hickson, Demarcus Cousins?
Bench: Marcus Thorton, Jason Thompson, Samuel Dalembert?
This team is not looking to bad. They also have the salary cap to take on big name free agents this year. They could be a contending team 3 years down the road. People need to be alert.

Knicksboy3ParticipantI like it for Cleveland, more then Sacramento.
The Cavs got Samuels to backup Thompson, so the Cavs needed a defensive wing. They get a 1st rounder as well.

Memphis MadnessParticipantIf the Kings don’t implode then they can make a run at the playoffs.
Casspi wasn’t even starting down the stretch for the Kings, but he is a nice player. I think a change of scenery will help. Probably a talent downgrade though from Hickson to Casspi.
The Cavs are now clearly in strip-down mode and are rebuilding around Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson. Casspi might be the Cavs’ new Ehlo. Not sure what that means. Probably that LeBron hits game winners in his face in the playoffs…

Here is link from Cleveland.com. The pick would be top ten protected.
The Kings are gonna be stacked with raw talent! Honeycutt is a steal, same for Isaiah, and hopefully Fredette will pan out. Than you have Tyreke who has superstar potential, and then Cousins, who would be a perenial 20 10 guy if it weren’t for his attitude and foul trouble. You add a solid 4 off the bench, this team has 8th seed potential

Scottoant93Participanti guess this explains the thompson choice, if only cavs traded him for amare then lebron might have stuck around.. oh well at least cavs are trying to rebuild jamesion would have been the logical person to try to trade, but I guess he could teach thompson a thing or too on offense since thompson already has the defense

JNixonParticipant"But what does this mean for Jason Thompson?"
I dont think were high on Thompson. Well, at least not Westphal. Thompson’s time was cut pretty nicely last year, and I don’t think the coaching staff was high on his approach to defense, even though he is a nice talent offensively. I think he’ll be dealt too, even though I can imagine his value probably isn’t very high.
Hickson to me is another version of Thompson in alot of ways. He’s not a devoted defender, but he does have some scoring ability from the PF spot and he’s a solid enough rebounder. Byron Scott was never a fan of him though, even though he was probably the best scorer Cleveland had on their roster. Scott benched him a few times I can remember, I even went to a Hawks game and he dressed out and didn’t play much because of his attitude and D. He might wear out his welcome with Westphal, but Westphal also might not be the coach for the team in the future.
Casspi is a 2nd unit type of SF, but he probably will get plenty of time in Cleveland where any NBA caliber talent is welcomed.

Memphis MadnessParticipantI think the Cavs are rebuilding the old Brandon, Phils, Mills, Tyrone Hill, Big Z, Cedric Henderson, and Vitaly Potapenko juggernaut that peaked around 45 wins with San Diego Summer Weather games (highs in the low 80’s with lows in the low 70’s). I am pretty sure that those teams lost in the first round every year too.
So they lose their best big man and get a tempermental small forward to build around 5 point guards. The Cavs might lose MORE games next year.

sammybuckeye13ParticipantWOW…wow…Obviously this is an A++ deal for the Kings, you get an awesome (and consistent/level headed) 22-year old PF with great size (6-9/245) to pair with Cousins. You have your backcourt in Jimmer/Tyreke, and if you resign Marcus Thornton you have arguably the most explosive scoring backcourt in the league. With very capable guys like John Salmons, Jason Thompson, and rotation guys Greene and Garcia, they’re a SF away from being a playoff team in a year or sooner.
The Cavs are trading Hickson for 50 cents on the dollar, but I see the logic. I think T. Thompson is ready to start and prove he’s a potential franchise PF. He averaged 13 points at Texas as a freshman on a team with 2 other 1st rd picks (not nearly as raw as some think), and he will form with Vareajo immediately one of the most tenacious defensive froncourts. Hickson for Casspi sounds stupid, but what the Cavs need more than anything is shooting/scorers, and Casspi is already a very good shooter with great size for SF. If they can deal Sessions for a 2-guard that can create offensive for himself, they’ll have turned this team around very nicely.
SIDENOTE: why not ask for Thornton in the deal too? Quick sign and trade…Hickson for Casspi/Thornton then makes it very fair talent wise, the Cavs eget their 2-guard and the Kings will still be salivating at the prospect of Hickson/Cousins.

GottaBeTheShoesParticipantKings fans don’t get too excited. Like cward23 said you dont go 24-58 and then get jimmer and hickson and expect to make the playoffs. There is this little thing that is very important to basketball. DEFENSE. Kings have no good defenders and very few solid defenders. Hickson is not a good defender. Jimmer is likely going to be terrible defensively. Marcus thornton is a small SG that is a pretty bad defender. While tyreke had some sophomore woes that he has to get out of to ever reach that "superstar potential" kings fan mention. He also had an injury last year and you wonder if that will affect them. Cousins looked like your best player most of last year and he looked bad defensively whenever i watched him. Just don’t think this is a playoff team.

JNixonParticipantYeah I agree, the Kings don’t have any good defenders on their roster. They have a bunch of scoring punch, but I’m looking at their roster. Besides John Salmons, who even hasn’t defended at a high level since he started playing for the Bucks, their roster has no defenders.

sammybuckeye13ParticipantThis is still very puzzling…Hickson 6 months ago was considered untradable…he has improved noticeably each year and averaged 13.8/8.7 in just 28 minutes, which is 17.6/11.1 per 36 minutes, he has prototypical PF size/athleticism and he’s only 22. He should be able to command more than Casspi, a sort of one dimensional wing whose scoring declined to 8 ppg his second yr in the league.

cward23ParticipantDon’t most young teams have Raw talent?
T Wolves already have a allstar in Love plus a allstar talent in Beasley and draft pick who should be produce just as well as Cousins and more potential than Jimmer and Hickson, a Point guard in Rubio who is a great passer and has been a pro for years
Clippers are also young with talent who isn’t as raw
Same with Golden State,UtahOKC is young and already a contender. Yes the Kings look to have a nice future but so do the other young teams in the west as you can see

Anton123ParticipantAt least now the draft makes some sense.
I can kinda understand it, I mean next years draft will be one of the best in the recent years and Cavs will probably have two lottery picks in this draft. Also I like Casspi and Cavs biggest need was a SF. He’ll start from day one.

OhCanada-ParticipantAnother scoring minded player looking to get his, with great talent, subpar intelligence, and no committment to defense. This is a good trade for Sacramento? So instead of Casspi sitting on the bench pouting they either lose their best defender in Dalembert or have Hickson/Thompson on the bench pouting. Not to mention Cousins now has to play C…
Cleveland did a great job. Honestly I would much rather have Casspi and Tristan Thompson then Vesely and Hickson. Just that defensive mentallity they are trying to build from the ground up is extremely apparent, and although they may not win many games a front court of Thompson and Varejao will annoy every single opponents frontcourt, and really make them work.

draftmangtParticipantChris Grant has made some very Questionables moves in his first year as GM but this by far is the worst. Omari Caspi ? and a pick we might not see until 2017!!!!!! I just dont get it.

Jlv2011wait to shoot at the 3pt line. He relatively does not have any other skills besides bringing energy. He’s not a starter in this league but he can shoot the ball.
PS The Kings should just give the Cavs Donte Greene because he is just awful.

Memphis MadnessParticipantThat draft pick is protected. Lottery protected in 2012 and top 10 protected until 2017.
Casspi wasn’t even putting up great numbers on the Kings.
Hopefully, the Cavs get their superstar in the draft next year, because "young" teams with talented players but no superstars usually don’t go anywhere.
They go from a possible JJ Hickson/Derrick Williams combo to a Tristan Thompson/Omri Casspi combo. Not sure I like it as much.
The Cavs still need help at center and at 2 guard, but there really isn’t a good center in next year’s lottery (really, a JJ Hickson-Derrick Williams-Jonas Valenciunas front line was so hard to figure out?). Mostly forwards and some decent shooting guards and 3 point guards who can be above-average NBA point guards (Teague, Kabongo, and Kendall Marshall). Next year, Teague and Marshall for Kentucky and UNC could be just as good as Knight and Irving were this year for Kentucky and Duke. I would rather go into next year as the Cavs with a great front line for the future and not having to rely on getting a top 3 pick next year. Then, worst case scenario, you can get a guard like Teague, Kabongo, Marshall, Austin Rivers, or Brad Beal to complement the Big Three. Wing players and big men win rings. Point guards win late lotto picks.

cward23ParticipantWhy would they wait till 2017 when they can use it next year in a deep and talented draft. There are players outside of the lotto
As far as Casspi putting up stats, they are very comparable with Hickson when you consider he was playing on damn near a D leauge allstar team where he was one of the focal points on offense

sacphil_08ParticipantWhy is everyone so sold on dalembert leaving?? All of the title contending teams in contention for him would only be able to offer him the mid level exception and that may not even be there once the free agent market opens up, and EVEN if the mid level was allowed, will dalembert take less money to play for one of those teams when the kings can offer him the money he’s looking for and still pursue another player in free agency? Im just saying…

rickyD510Participant"http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/sam_amick/06/30/kings.trade/index.html
The move is even more necessary in light of the likely departure of center Samuel Dalembert, as sources close to him say he was disappointed when extension talks went nowhere with the Kings and he is now far more interested signing with a contender in free agency."

buckeyefan17ParticipantI’m okay with this trade. Reports were coming out that JJ wanted a lot more money as a free agent next year. He’s way to inconstant ( some night he would have 24 and 12 others he would have 6 and 3.) Plus at times he was lazy and not fully into the games which lead to being in coach Scott”s doghouse at points of the year. Omari is a decent sf who is still young (24) and a good 3 point shooter which the Cavs need with Ap’s days being numbered. Here’s hoping the Young Kings with players like Cousins, Evans, JJ, Jimmer , Honeycutt, Marcus, can lead them to a 8th seed in the upcoming years!
….and for those saying that they should have traded JJ for Amare they actually had reports that the Suns wanted more then just JJ.

Allen_Iverson_3ParticipantConfirmed by Kings AND Cavs!

imo a nice deal, pretty fair and helps both teams to feel some holes.

MarvincibleParticipantAs a Kings fan, this is a great deal. Way better deal than the Salmons deal. I can see why both teams pulled the trade tho. Kings opened up more minutes for Honeycutt & Salmons & the Cavs needed a starting SF. As crazy as it sounds, the Kings owners said they wanna win now & are done rebuilding. Theres still a logjam as the 3 spot tho with Salmons, Garcia, Green, & Honeycutt. Green has to be next. I know that we brought in Hickson cause Sammy D aint comin back. He’s heavily targeted by contenders like NY & MIA. I hope we do a sign & trade where we package Green in that deal. I know its not likely to happen but I want Nene on the team. I honestly dont think Cousins can guard all the centers in the league. If we do get Nene, we’ll have a deep bench with young talent, & youu cant go wrong with that. If that is the case, then the lineup could look something like this.
Starting: Evans,Jimmer,Salmons,Cousins,Nene (Evans guarding the best guard on the opposing team of course)
Bench: Thomas,Thornton,Honeycutt,Hickson,Whiteside

NardDog NationParticipantThe funny thing about all of this is that the Cavs once passed on acquiring Amar’e Stoudemire with JJ Hickson being the principal asset heading to Phoenix. Not only would they have ended up with a better player had they made this trade but they would have had an exponentially better chance of keeping LeBron in Cleveland with the way Amar’e played in the playoffs that year. I wouldn’t be surprised if they would’ve made the NBA Finals and made the Lakers sweat.

BasketBalAllanParticipantIt is a great trade for the Kings. The 1st rounder is top 14 protected in 2012, top 13 in 2013, top 12 in 2014, and top 10 in 2015-2017, if it has not gone by then it means that in 2017 the Kings would instead give the Cavs their second rounder instead. This means that the Kings should never have to give up a major talent in that pick and pretty much just ended up swapping Hickson for Casspi and a late lotto player in a few years. It frees up SF a little bit and makes it so now they can have more than just Thompson at PF. I do not think it really affects them trying to resign Dalembert because a post of Thompson, Hickson, Dalembert, and Cousins is not really that crowded.
