The Denver Nuggets have had preliminary discussions with the Los Angeles Lakers on a Carmelo Anthony trade, league sources told ESPN The Magazine’s Chris Broussard on Tuesday.
The Lakers’ package would be built around center Andrew Bynum. Denver has no interest in Ron Artest and isn’t particularly interested in Lamar Odom either, sources said. A straight-up deal of Bynum for Anthony works financially, but there could be other players involved since Denver would look to shed more salary if possible.
Sources described the talks as in their infancy, and a three-way deal between the Knicks, Nuggets and Wolves is very much alive.
Bynum is averaging 11.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in 27 games this season as he works his way back from injury. In five full seasons with Los Angeles, Bynum has averaged only 56 games per season due to injuries.
Anthony is coming off a 50-point, 11-rebound outing Monday, but the Nuggets lost to the Rockets.
——————————-I’m still waiting on Minnesota to swoop in and state their willingness to give up a first round pick to get Luke Walton.

llperezobviously melo is >>>>>then bynum, but what other options are better for the nuggets right now? People talking about bynums injuries forget he hasnt gotten injured in over a year. His games missed this season were due to the recovery from surgery from last years injury that he had put off until after the playoffs. He still has lots of potential and has been moving around the court well thsi season recently looking fit.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantHow does it benefit the Nuggets to not only set themselves back significantly by dealing Melo but extend the window for the Lakers to compete for titles by upwards of five or six years in the process?
Teams shouldn’t be wanting to operate on the ten year plan of David Kahn with a movable starting date that has been delayed since 2009.

llperezwell eventaully denver is gonna want to get something for him and from what im hearing the knicks havent been blowing them away with offers. Bynum still has potential to be an all-star center in this league if he could stay healthy. Personally i dont really care one way or the other, i like the lakers as is and i thnk bynums inside presence is underrated.

KayjayParticipantNot to mention, lol you do realize both of them are ball dominant people. Don’t sugar coat Kobe’s need to dominate the ball. I know people didn’t think Wade and Lebron could compliment eachother, but this is just…I don’t see bro. Kobe and Melo on the same team? Not to mention, Melo would want to get paid, along with probably giving up their depth, the Lakers would deal with chemistry issues this late into the season. And there would be no garuntee that this would work in the near, or further future.

IndianaBasketballParticipantWrong.
Melo isn’t ball dominant. He doesn’t need to hold onto the ball for long periods of time. Kobe can be ball dominant at times, but has the complete skill set not to be.
Then add in the triangle… It’s a good offense for getting others involved, etc. I don’t see any chemistry problems. Then throw in the fact that Kobe and Melo have a great relationship. He’s almost like a little brother to Kobe.
Throw in Phil. This is what he’s great at… Taking big time personalities and making them mesh well together.

SteroidParticipantI think Melo being ball dominant is a myth. Didn’t he and Iverson both average over 25 points together? Melo is a scorer. Scorer =/= ball dominant.

Moon RiverParticipantIf they secure Melo, does this mean Phil comes back? Does that lock in Dwight Howard’s departure from Orlando to LA (not the Clips). This would be a huge move for Mitch, but where there is smoke, there is usually fire. Actually, this is helping Denver’s position as we come closer to the trade deadline. If this is a complete false hood, Mitch needs to speak up to counter Denver’s shenanigans.

IndianaBasketballParticipantThe problem is people don’t know what ball dominance is. A lot of people confuse taking a lot of shots with dominating the ball.
IF you pay attention to Melo’s game, he doesn’t hold onto the ball for long periods of time. He can catch and shoot. He can catch, jab and then get to the rack. He makes quick decisions with the ball.
Melo has a complete game scoring wise. He’s not like a LeBron (though he’s shown improvement playing off of the ball, going into the post, etc this season) who needs to dribble dribble dribble for long periods of time.

HitsterParticipantFully agree with Indy Ball, Melo plays with a former All Star PG in Billups so isn’t such a ball dominant player as someone like Kobe is. Kobe would love the deal as it extends his window a lot longer getting a 27 year old Franchise Player into the Lakers potentially. As Kobe gets older then Melo I would assume gradually take over more of the mantle, if they could divide the shots up as you also have Gasol who is a near 20ppg player on court then it could work.
My fear would be a new coach coming in and perhaps deciding to change things around, give Melo preference over Kobe for example and could an inexperienced coach handle the ego’s. Phil Jackson it would be no problem with but another coach could have issues.

IndianaBasketballParticipantPhil would be crazy to leave IF they get Melo… That could be a few more titles for him.
IF he does leave though, I think Brian Shaw would make the most sense.
Lakers would lose length in this deal, but you get another high scoring wing who’s clutch to take the pressure off of Kobe. Kobe would love this deal.

HitsterParticipantThey can always add a veteran big or two via FA and use their MLE to make a run at someone like Sam Dalambert for example. Any big they signed would only need to rebound and provide a defensive presence as the scoring takes care of itself.

The Scare Crow ReturnsParticipantI can see where getting a young center for your franchise player who dreams of the bright lights of the big city would be Interesting,…but Melo wants The Garden, I’m actually not surprised the Lakers are jumping in on this trade…They’ve made their legacy by stealing top tier talent from around the league…this would be another deadline head scratcher…it doesn’t give Denver cap relief and draft picks, they actually spent half of season turning down good offers only to take a Bynum for Melo swap, the same Andrew Bynum who can’t stay healthy and people say isn’t worth cat crap in a trade…

IndianaBasketballParticipantI’m sure Denver won’t just do Melo for Bynum straight up. They’re also looking for some salary cap relief and a first round pick. I assume another team would be included in on the deal. IF Denver was to get Bynum, find someone to take Harrington/Anderson and get a first round pick, they’d do the deal. This is where the Timberwolves come into the picture lol.

K.LOVE THE ALLSTARIf this happens i will owe Dnyce a very BIG I’M SORRY..LOL. Melo could fit in easily though because he can be ball dominate but he also knows how to not be.
His offensive game is so complex that he can adapt to any system. I think the Lakers will persue this more if they lose to Boston by alot the next game. Damn i knew we would get another star but i didn’t think it was even possible for it to be this year.
Could be a bad trade for Denver if Bynum ends up getting injuried. I can see how its not a good trade for them(i’m a laker fan but imma take my laker hat out and look from both sides). Bynum has allstar potential but he also has the potential to get injuried as well. The lakers also won’t have any early first round picks to give so that makes the deal worst then a deal with some of the lower teams

NYK2010ParticipantHoward to the Lakers really for who Odom and Artest next year come on be realistic.
Or do you think he’ll sign with the Lakers for the mid level exception, since the Lakers will be capped out with Kobe, Gasol, Mello will already be making max money.
Dnyce was he the same guy who said Bosh for Bynum was a done deal and was going to happen last year.
History is on the Lakers side though as they’ve landed a big name player via trade basically every few years if you think about it.

mikeyvthedonParticipantDoes anyone else think that DNYCE is possibly World Wide Wes? I was thinking David Stern, maybe even Jerry West, but with the whole edomites thing, World Wide Wes comes to mind. I think he ultimately wants to create the greatest basketball player in history, so he makes a few lopsided trades and, boom, people are talking about Kobe being better than Jordan.
On a serious note, maybe DNYCE was right. About everything. The Lakers have become boring, us edomites are inferior beings with evil intentions, so on and so on in the bible.
If this trade does happen, I will tell you this much, my faith in man kind would have vanished. I love the Lakers, but I will admit that they have benefited from some lopsided deals in their time to get to the point or maintain dominance. This deal is incredibly ridiculous in the liner notes of being Melo for Bynum. I know DNYCE and others would argue that Bynum could be a potentially franchise cornerstone Center, but in the back of his mind and everyone else in the worlds mind, we probably assume Andrew Bynum will be constantly hurt and unable to be relied upon. Andrew Bynum, Yao Ming or Greg Oden, take your pick? You say Bynum, but are you really that confident? I have little confidence in the help of either of them, and think the Nuggets could rebuild around something way more stable by doing it through the draft. Not to mention, what happens to Nene in this whole deal? Well, if Denver wanted to severely shake the balance of power back into the Lakers favor, this would be the deal to do it. Sure, the Lakers may lack depth inside without Andrew Bynum, they lose some length, but do you really want to deal with Kobe, Melo, Gasol and Odom? Still have Artest and Barnes bugging you off the bench on defense?
I find this trade to be a complete phony, but if it goes through, be very fearful of the prophet DNYCE.

K.LOVE THE ALLSTARI doubt that it happens either. I think he stays in Orlando. But his contract is up in 2 or 3 years right?..isn’t Kobe and Gasol’s contract up around then?

HitsterParticipantKobe and Gasol’s contracts both run until 2014, if Melo does to to LA then he’ll either sign that extension or a new deal in the summer so the Lakers will be over the cap level with 3 players. If Bynum does go then an S and T for Howard would be hard to do as it would probably have to revolve around Odom’s team option, the Lakers have given up their pick this year so the next first rounder they can send would be 2013 which may go in the Melo deal.
