I still hear people say that the Gasol trade was one of the worse trades of all time, but if you really look at it, it actually looks like a good trade for Memphis.

Memphis got Marc Gasol(who is much more physical than his brother), cap room(which they used to get ZBO), and first round picks(which they used to get Darrell Arthur). All of them have been key contributers throughout the playoffs so far.

Pau Gasol was never really a guy to build around, if they had kept him they probably would have never gotten out of the first round.

I mean Marc Gasol wasnt even in the US then and Memphis only got Kwame Brown and Javaris Crittenton at 1st it turned out to be a good deal for Memphis as they turned 1 guy in the frontline(Gasol) into their frontcourt rotation Gasol-Randolph-Arthur

At the time yes because they traded him for Kwame, but now its about equal, remember Gasol helped the lakers win a championship so its not like he’s a bad player, not a 1st option but he just had a bad series.

It was a good trade for LA, I’m just saying it wasn’t a horrible trade for Memphis like everyone said it was.

What the hell? Ok, it was a great trade for LA, still is, and Memphis somehow gets really bad moves to go in their favor, so it was an odd trade. But we will all forget about this when Pau put up 18 and 8 again.

Yes I agree, now that time has passed and we’ve seen the outcome of marc gasol and the group the grizz have assembled. We can say it was a fair trade, and that it ended up benefiting everyone. Its definally not the worst trade of all time

It was not really a good trade. Yes, Marc Gasol is playing well, and Pau just finished playing like poo, but they went to three championships with him. If you can convince yourself that Marc is the better of the two, or that the Lakers would be in a better position with him, than you can say it was a fair trade. If you mention it in "what have you done for me lately", than some would even convince themselves Memphis won the deal (though, not exactly fitting themselves for rings yet). But, as of right now, the Lakers are FAR ahead in this trade. Especially if this leads to them getting something for Pau Gasol if they do indeed trade him.

Memphis helped the Lakers get 3 finals appearences, 2 rings while Memphis has 0 in both categories. Yeah, they got some good pieces, and they’re looking strong right now, but the Lakers still got the better deal out of this. Winning championships is the ultimate prize over aquiring good talent or anything else.  If Memphis can get to the finals and even come close to winning, then I’ll be generous and say it was fair.

dont get me wrong, i think Kwame Brown is awful too but do you guys think Smith directed too much of his rant on how bad brown is as opposed to the actual logistics of the deal?

^^^^^ Yeah but has Smith ever been on topic about anything, rather then going on one of his rants

Yes it was that bad.  The Grizzles are an 8th seed in the playoffs while the Lakers won two rings and made it to the finals 3 times.  It was a completely uneven team.  I remember some of you guys were saying Pau was more valuable than Kobe at the beginning of the season because Pau started off 25-12-5 in like 10 games.  The guy you guys had as a top 10 MVP candidate you guys are now saying isn’t as good as Marc Gasol?

Fairweather fans here…  Pau Gasol is still an All-Star caliber player.  He’s still a double double guy.  He’s still a briliiant post passer.  He’s still one of the best PFs in the league.  And you’re telling me Marc Gasol is probably better?  Please..

Are you forgetting that Pau was a top 10 player this year?

Marc may be outplaying Pau so far in the playoffs, but that’s a VERY small sample size in the context of this trade.

The trade happened 3.5 seasons ago. Marc is only now (this playoffs) starting to play up the level that Pau was at when the trade occured.

Kwame, Crittenton and the pick were all filler.

It was an extremely lopsided trade at the time, and it is still horrible on reflection. The Grizz could have got WAY more in return for Pau.

Think for a moment just how lucky the Grizzlies are that these pieces came together… Zach Randolph had a complete attitude change, Marc panned out, Battier came in a  trade, Tony Allen made a quantum leap, Conley finally improved after looking like a possible bust.

Regardless, I really love how they’re playing now, and I hope they keep it up. So far, this is the best playoffs I’ve ever seen.

When did I ever say Marc Gasol was better than Pau Gasol? More physical than his brother doesn’t mean he is better, it just means he is tougher and not as soft.

And I wasn’t talking about only getting Marc. If they didn’t trade Pau they wouldn’t have had the cap room for ZBO, who is a all star caliber player.

At the time of the trade it seemed 1 sided..I was in Memphis the day the trade was announced and i was surprised by how happy so many Memphis fans were to see Pau go…Sports Talk Shows were bombarded with calls and the majority of them were callers that thought Memphis didnt get anything in return for losing an all star…

Folks joked Pau about how bad it was to be traded for his younger brother..Alot of people in Memphis thought the deal was lope sided becuz they had seen Marc play there in high school and remembered a fat slow kid, that ddnt look like a future top 10 nba center at all..And adding Kwame Brown the biggest bust in nba history in the deal, didnt make some fans happy either….

What puzzled me,is that Memphis said they traded Pau becuz they couldn’t afford him..But then they turn around and give Randolph an almost similar deal, gave Rudy a max deal and resigned Conley….

So many folks are bandwagon fans, during the 1st 25 games of the season they had Pau as the leading MVP candidate and said he was the league’s best power forward and surefire Hall of Famer..Now they want to toss him in the ocean with Bin Laden…

     That was an awesome video.

But that trade got the Lakers two championships not to mention a few very good regular season runs. Setting aside Pau’s recent playoffs, he has been one the top five power forwards in the game over the last few years. So it was a tremendously lopsided trade, even if Marc is now playing like, maybe, the tenth best center in the league. We don’t know if he can keep this up and Pau has many years of high level play already since the trade.

Looking at it now it’s not nearly as lopsided as it looked before. Marc Gasol is now one of the better C’s in the NBA, and has been for about 2 years now, and the pick they used to acquire Darrell Arthur gives them a solid backup PF who’s athleticism and energetic.

But back then, you’d be all the way by yourself if you thought giving up the biggest bust ever in Kwame Brown, a VERY raw PG prospect and current NBDL guy in Crittenton, a 2nd round pick chubby big man in Marc Gasol, and a vet on his last wheel in Aaron McKie wasn’t a lopsided deal. But now the deal is solid, as Gasol transformed his body and has become a very good young C and Darrell Arthur woke up after 2 years of doing nothing and now is a good rotation PF. Credit to Memphis for being patient, they reaped the benefits.

How many rings would the Griz have if they kept Pau? Zero, the same number they have now. How many playoff games did they win with Pau? Zero. Were they going to sign a top free agent to play alongside Pau? No.

It took a while, but the trade has panned out for Memphis.
